This is Meesha, Silver’s companion and bonded mate. Meesha came to us as a very afraid teenager with no socialization. Her first year or so was spent being nervous, scared, and wanting to escape people. Adding Silver to Meesha’s enclosure did wonders in calming her and decreasing her flight distance to where she would take treats from our hands. Turns out she is a champion hole digger, creating a long and deep den each winter season. Even though there will be no little ones, it is interesting to watch their behavior as the season unfolds into Spring. Meesha still has a ways to go to successfully interact with people, but she is very content and close to Silver as her companion. Pict copyright by Ryan Talbot.

The picture album (Silver) ha 4 pics of one of our most outgoing animals. He came here via animal control as they closed down a breeder for horrible conditions. Silver loves people and food, and has never met a person (or a food bowl) he didn't like. Lindsay Mehrkam from UF is pictured with him on a recent visit to work with our animals. Ryan Talbot took the pictures and has copyrights to them.

This is Rosco, one of our two new rewidents. He is 9mo old, neutered and fully vetted. The guy is a sweet dog and super friendly. His previous owner is unfortunately headed for jail for a long, long time. A dog rescue talked us into taking him, and we have paired him with Tazia who lost her mate last Winter. Both are getting along great, but we will try hard to find a home for Rosco. He is too adoptable to stay here.

This is Spirit--only puppy of Midnight, the pregnant black GSD we took in. She is lookin good, and will hopefully be on the next puppy transport. All puppy and a real handful at times, but learns quick and loves people. I'd hape a lot more pics, but she has only one speed--flat out. Never stops except at night for sleep.

Time to play catch-up with Nite Howls. It's too easy to stay away from the computer and in the pens. The wolfdog side has lost Tekka, who was close to 15. She spent her last days with White Cloud (Pics earlier) wandering aroound their pen together. Both had lost mates in the past year, but were happy to not be left alone. Midnight and her puppy are doing great. Little tyke is 6 wks and will get playmates ia a few days. The puppy side has been chaos. One puppy transport the end of May and another in a week normally would empty the puppies side out, but we have managed to take in several puppies that will swell the numbers again. Twelve coming this afternoon amidst all the pouring rainstorms. I'll refrain from the obvious pun here. Things are just BUSY here.

Midnight, the gsd momma is doing fine. She only has one puppy, the second one died within minutes of birth. Puppy is 3wks old and momma is very protective. We are respecting momma, but finding times to play with puppy to start socializing. Since there are no playmates, we will have to provide for that. Our other puppies are too old for this one, and momma is still too protective. So we look for ways to help the puppy develop.

Puppies on the ground!! Midnight, after her early AM walk, decided today was a fine day to drop puppies. One on the ground so far! Karyl hovering like a midwife, waiting for more. My two weeks left to prepare just went away!! Pics when the dust settles and momma is all done.

Midnight, the GSD osted earlier is definitely pregnant. She goes to the vet this week for her "pre" vet check. She is still extremely shy and still needs verbal coaxing to exit her pen for walks. Tomorrow she will be moved into her inside kennel to adjust and have her puppies. That's all a/c and comfy with a den for security/quiet. We figure only a couple weeks left before she has them.

Shedding Time!! The fur is floating! This is Aztec, just one of the fuzzos who are trading winter for summer, and basically looking pretty rugged right now. Several dogs will need close clipping to remove mats and the hair, dirt, water mix they have been creating all winter. A few seem to just shed and come up clean after a few rubs in the sandy soil or against trees and fence. Meanwhile, dog hair is one of the four major food groups!

Another puppy run started at 4:00 am this morning. Loaded 12 puppies and Karyl drove off to meet rescuer, make 3 stops for more puppies, and finally off to Atlanta with 33 animals. They will be transloaded and continue to MA to ASPCA shelter for adoption. Long day for all, but glad to see the little fellas get a forever home. So far, every pup transported has been adopted, and longest was 3wks because it was a border collie mix and they were careful to get educated adopter with proper containment. Now we can get ready for Midnight if she is pregnant, and work outside on spring cleaning and construction in enclosures. And the cycle keeps going!!

Kudos to Pilots N Paws. They flew this GSD from Tampa to Marianna Florida where we picked her up. These pilots transport rescues throughout Florida and the South. There were 3 others on the plane when we picked up Midnight. Midnight was shceduled to be PTS, even though they suspected she was pregnant. We agreed to take her as a rescue because of her preggo status. Didn't really have room, but couldn't let a momma w/potential pups be put down. Midnight is adjusting slowly, very scared (took two days to come out of crate in kennel). Another week of adjustment and confidence building and we will vet check for health and possible puppies.

Apparently my facebook skills suck. I wrote a note about Tekka and White Cloud being paired up after both lost their mate this winter, but the note went somewhere---away! Anyway, these two old dogs are aging gracefully and we decided to see if they would accept a new companion after 6 and 12 years with a different companion. Both are fine with the new arrangement, although I think Tekka misses her old routine and environment some. The adjacent WDs are new to her, but that has not been a problem so far. She is too mellow to care!!

03/04/2012

Tekka and White Cloud have been moved together, since both lost mates this fall. They spend their time following each other around like the mall walkers. Too old to really play! Both animals seem to be happier than alone although neither are interested in physical "romping" anymore. We will build a new shelter for them without the upper levels to climb and easy doorways to navigate.

Two from the puppie side--Guy giving away free in WalMart parking lot! They are getting shots and loving, and being readied to find a permanent home. Lots different than a 100lb WD. I think our leashes weigh more than they do.

Tazia-Aspen's mate, now alone but adjusting well. Took these Sat just before storms rolled through Florida Panhandle.

Banner weekend coming. Website nitehowls.org is finished, new puppy kennel in workshop done. When rain leaves I can take pics. I think all the links are in place.

Another crazy weekend. Doggies love the cold am temps. Full of energy during the day instead of trying to dig to cool. Appetites are up and so is winter "moods" with animals in adjacent enclosures. I forgot--breaking ice in water buckets is a pain!

Looks like Angel will move to the house pack to make room for a new rescue outside. King, who we picked up Sunday has been on a chain for 4-5 years. Despite that, he is super sweet and beginning to trust us already. He was laying down and resting within 15 min of being introduced to his new pen. Pics tomorrow hopefully.

Very early pre dawn rise and puppy roundup, after Nite Howls alpha mommy spent most of the night giving them all baths. Six left for NEAS and adoption to their new homes. Two unfortunately tested heartworm positive and did not make the trip. They will stay for Hartgard treatment, along with one that needs more socialization to get her ready to show her stuff for a new forever owner. Finally quiet for a few moments!! Wolfdogs are all really enjoying the mild temps and cool mornings!

The past week plus has been havoc with the animals here. What should have been a quiet Thanksgiving was anything but. We sadly have two less voices in the howl chorus. Datka, a long time resident, reached the decision point and was helped over the bridge yesterday. A week before, Sasha, a resident since 2009, quietly slipped away while we were trying to get her through the night and into the vet office. Both were 12-14yrs old and having rear hip issues. On the bright side, another load of 7 puppies is vetted, socialized, and ready to head off to permanent homes the end of the week. One shy girl is being held back (like repeating kindergarten) and will go next trip. Jackson, the white puppy pictures in earler posts, has his new home and is off to a new start in life. We will miss him!!

11/23/2011

Angel, our non-WD from Georgia, turned up heartworm positive on her vet check, so she will miss the ride to Mass to the adoption shelter. We are starting her on a Hartgard/Ivermectin regimine that will hopefully cure her in a few months. She has a potential adopter we are working with but meanwhile she will remain here, possibly integrated into our house pack. Angel is oblibious to all this and really coming out of her quiet shell----romping like a typical Husky! If only there were more time in a day to play with all these great animals!
