DEKALB AFRICAN CICHLIDS is gearing up for the fall fish swap season. Early on we have the Green water Swap 9/14/24 the Milwaukee Swap 9/15/24 the GCCA Swap 9/22/24, Fins and Feathers Fest 9/28/24 and our own Northern Illinois Swap on 10/6/24. Fish swaps are an great opportunity for viewing a lot of vendors at once who have almost everything fresh water, fish, plants, shrimp, accessories, foods both frozen and dry, equipment and much more at very attractive prices. Some swaps are free admission others have a small fee. All have FB pages with addresses, times and details. Here are some tips for the newer hobbyists (and reminders for the "old timers".

1) Ask questions. The vendors have a great deal of experience in the hobby and are more than glad to offer their expertise.

2) Pre ordering will insure your purchase and avoid the first 1/2 hour crush of business. If you have a specific need most vendors will be happy to take your advance order. Some will ask for pre payment others will not.

3) Have patience. Most tables are only 6-8ft long so only a few folks can get front row seats. Best bet is to make a circuit first kind of a preview run to see in general what people have.

4) Bring a reusable bag for your treasures or be prepared to have a great many plastic bags hanging off you and your party. Some folks even have thermal insulated for carrying frozen foods or protecting delicate fish from temperature changes.

5) Aisles are not 4 lane highways. Some smaller swaps especially in the first 1/2 hour can be a little tight. So if you have strollers or other larger items be aware.

6) Payments will vary. The sure bet is ca$h. Some vendors will take electronic payments or even credit card transactions but not all.

7) Most vendors have business cards. Pick them up for future reference. Many times after a swap I see a post about "Who was the guy in the yellow shirt selling Mbuna? He was by a window!" They come in handy when you are between swaps. These folks do business besides the swaps.

DEKALB AFRICAN CICHLIDS will be a vendor at the Greenwater Fish Swap Saturday 8/17/24 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Tinley Park. We will have adult and juvie Africans, a few plecos and maybe a surprise or two. Frozen and dry foods will be available as well as an assortment of accessories, filters and more. DEKALB AFRICAN CICHLIDS will be back at Greenwater Fish Swap in Tinley Park 8/17/24. Took a little time off for fishing trips this summer. We will have a nice selection of adult and juvenile African Cichlids, plecos, Dempseys and juvie Macaw cichlids along with a nice selection of dry and frozen foods, accessories and equipment. If you are a fish keeper and use foods both frozen and dry or small wares such as air stones, water conditioner, filter media, nets etc then stop on by for some very good prices on all that and more. As summer moves toward early fall fish swaps are returning to the calendar. Some operate during the summer while many others start up again in Sept. So what exactly are these? It is a group of tropical fish hobbyists who get together for a few hours to participate in an aquarist "flea market" if you will. They display all things freshwater aquatic and make them available to the general public. The ones I am covering are from Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin but you will find them all over.
The venues vary from hotels to community buildings or banquet halls. They vary in size but generally there are at least 30 vendors up to near 100 at the biggest. Some are free admission while others charge a small entrance fee. It is a great way to see a whole lot of stuff in one space and deal with some very knowledgeable fish folks many who breed their own stock. I am just going to list locations and names here but my website has dates/times and more info on all of these out into 2025. Feel free to use it as a good reference.

We will feature a nice line of foods including Flakes, growth Pellets and sinking wafers, frozen foods including Beefheart, Brine Shrimp, Blood worms, Mysis Shrimp, African Cichlids both juvies and adults, equipment and accessories. All of the above have FB pages/ websites that provide times, addresses and vendor lists. Take advantage of these prior to the swaps. Here are some points to consider
1) Vendors are only able to bring a set amount to these events due to transport space, time due to loading and bagging fish. If you have a specific item you are looking for check the vendor list of the swap. Most provide contact info for vendors. Many vendors accept pre orders.
2) Most vendors deal in cash, some accept electronic payment and a few accept credit cards. Consider this before you have to track down an ATM.
3) These are family affairs so be patient and courteous to your fellow attendees and the vendors. We are all hobbyists with a shared interest.
4) Most folks like to make "1 round" just to see what is available. That said it is a first come first served deal. The biggest crowd is at the opening ( another reason to consider pre order..no rush)
5) Much of what are at these swaps is not easy to find. These provide a no shipping experience, a chance to speak to your supplier and an opportunity to trade ideas with some very good fish keepers.
6) Most important have a great time, grab business cards for future info and see all facets of the tropical freshwater fish world. May even come across a salty or two. Catch the wave!

So I need some inspiration and input. A new fish swap is occurring in Freeport on 7/28/24. From my understanding it will include reptiles, fish, and small animals. This is NOT affiliated with the prior swap held in Freeport. I am considering going but need some folks showing interest. I feature African Cichlids, dry foods, frozen foods , some equipment and accessories. Any interest out there? This area is in need of this type of venture but needs support from customers. DEKALB AFRICAN CICHLIDS

Summer is in the last half and the fish are enjoying the warm temperatures more than I am. Grow outs are my target this time of year in preparation for the fall swaps. The first will be GWAS on August 17th followed by most starting in Sept (GCCA, Northern Illinois Fish Swap 10/6, and then Milwaukee. Our newest swap the Southern Wisconsin Fish Swap starts up on 1/26/25.
This is a great time to rearrange tanks and make plans for your fall purchases. My outside pond is seasonal so come September I will have about 100 fish to house. Local breeders are still available in summer for business but even we go on vacation, coach softball or attend other activities.
Lastly our hobby is becoming increasingly difficult to discuss on Facebook. I try to steer my customers to a website which not only has my inventory but swap dates and locations for most nearby swaps and also some links to local breeders. Messaging is the best way to communicate either text, Messenger or email. My website -Chefs Corner and his Aquariums is accessible thru Google and is fairly user friendly. As summer settles in we find ourselves with only a few swaps .Mother nature has lent a hand on heating water to the pint I have to cool the pond once and a while. PSA: As fish swap season winds down the spring summer schedule still has some available swaps. Milwaukee has one left til fall and Greenwater Aquarist Society in Tinley Park as well as Fins and Feathers Fest in Mt Prospect will continue. Most other swaps will ramp up in the early fall. My website - Chefs Corner and His Aquariums - has dates listed for the Northern Illinois and Southern WS area swaps out to years end.
That said breeders such as myself still operate during this period. Check their contact info and pm them or check FB/websites for details and inventories. Outdoor ponds is another feature for the season. My 300g is up and running with a few test fish in it. Folks who do plants outdoors are watching the temps and beginning to put there greenery out. Time to refresh and re organize. This is a continuing hobby. And remember Mother nature will assist in heating... for a few months anyway. Enjoy
