Follow this 5 steps if you feel a snag in your thinner

1. Check for a Nick – If the shears catch, there's likely a nick in the solid blade. Slowly open and close them to feel where the catch is.

2. Spread & Close – Using your forefinger and thumb, gently spread the blades, then close past the nick.

3. Pinch & Open – Pinch at the nick, then slowly open the shears.

4. Repeat – Do this 3-4 times to smooth out the catch.

5. Test – If the shears still catch, secure them with a rubber band and set them aside for sharpening.

3 Tips to ensure your blades get safely mailed-in in 2025

1. Individually wrap your blades in bubble wrap, or newspaper to prevent the teeth from getting broken. Do the same with your shears to prevent them from getting nicks.
Remember, we want to remove as little metal as necessary to get to a fresh edge. Any nicks on the cutting surface may require sharpeners to remove more metal to get past the nicks.

2. Place them inside a sturdy and secure box that will hold them in place. (please do not ship shears in an envelope unless it’s in a shear box, mailmen don’t like getting poked by shears)
Minimize movement by adding packing material.

3.Consider mailing your sharpening out so that it arrives during the first part of the week, that offers the best chance that your order will be done in the quickest manner as it won't have to sit over the weekend. (even sharpeners need a day off…lol)

Consider using our mail-in sharpening service:

Top 3 Signs your blades need to be brought to a professional

🙅They start to irritate the dog’s skin

It’s hard to tell what’s wrong with your shears or clipper blades at first glance. It could be a myriad of things that are causing it to improperly cut or thug on the dog’s fur. If this happens, bring it to your sharpener for inspection as soon as you can.

🙅Your shears make a clacking sound

That usually happens when your stopper falls off of your shear. But a more concerning issue is if the tips cross each other because of the missing stopper which could potentially cause an accident both to you or the dog. If replacing the stopper doesn’t stop the clacking sounds, talk to your sharpener.

🙅Your shears fold hair

You notice your shears aren’t cutting hair. Instead, they’re folding and tugging. Potential reasons may be that it’s dull, misaligned, there are nicks on the blade’s surface, or improperly tensioned. Put a rubber band around your shears and put it aside until you get in touch with your sharpener.

These are the 3 common signs your blades need to be brought to a professional.

3 Clipper care tips for 2025

1. Oil your blades after every groom - unlubricated blades tend to cause more friction between them resulting in your clipper’s motor to overheat. When neglected for a long time, this will wear your motor out faster than it should.

Solution? Keep your blades oiled.

2. Replace your old blade drive/lever. Ideally, Andis Blade dives should be changed every 6-8 weeks of regular use by a professional groomer. Heiniger, Oster, Wahl blade lever are usually good for 12-16 weeks of use by a professional groomer. Of course home groomers only working on their pets will go much longer between changes.

3. Call a professional for any technical issues - if you have a clipper that’s past its warranty period, unless you are a trained technician yourself, please avoid tampering with the electronics of your clipper that may result in further damages.

Let a professional guide you and show you how to troubleshoot your clipper first before bringing it to them. They have the necessary tools and experience to deal with the matter.
