This is a friendly reminder that Under Florida Statute § 828.12, it is a first-degree misdemeanor to treat an animal with cruelty or in an inhumane manner. Cruelty towards animals includes: “overloading, overdriving, or tormenting,” depriving of food, water or shelter & mutilating or killing an animal in a cruel manner. Anyone convicted of animal cruelty is subject to fines of $5,000 & up to $10,000 and/or 1 to 5 years in jail. Acts of cruelty against cats include but are not limited to: harming cats in any way, killing cats, ABANDONING cats, RELOCATING cats in a public place or abandoning a cat that has been trapped. Any acts of cruelty should be reported to Volusia County Animal Services at 386-248-1790. If an animal appears to be in immediate danger call the police as soon as possible.

Update on the cruelty case of community cat Juliet❗

Yesterday, Alley Cat Allies helped secure a felony conviction for Juliet's abuser. Our support to the prosecution was instrumental, as the defense attempted to avoid a conviction and jail time entirely, requesting dismissal of the case twice.

Zhean Bai pleaded no contest and was convicted of cruelty to a companion animal for forcing Juliet into a garbage bag and slamming her onto the ground this time last year. His horrific actions caused Juliet grave injuries, and she had to be humanely euthanized. Bai is sentenced to 30 days in jail, after which he is subject to deportation to China, his country of origin.

However, we want Juliet’s story to remain in the public conscience and will continue our fight for stronger punishments for animal cruelty that reflect the severity of these crimes.
