Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are two common heat-related conditions that can affect our pets when they are exposed to hot weather. Both heat exhaustion and heat stroke are incredibly dangerous and should be treated immediately by a veterinary professional if suspected. Here are the key differences between the two:

Heat exhaustion is marked by excessive panting, excessive drooling, weakness, and rapid breathing. Heat stroke is a more dangerous, life-threatening condition marked by bright red gums and tongue, excessive panting, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Because pets can’t speak, diagnostics can sometimes be more of a process of elimination. But due to our experience treating thousands of pets each year, we can often pinpoint where to look and what diagnostic technologies to employ to help us get to the root cause of your pet's illness or condition as quickly as possible. The sooner the diagnosis, the sooner the treatment can begin–yet another reason we encourage all pet owners to have a relationship with a primary care veterinarian who can perform routine screenings and catch minor issues before they become major.
