Heat-related illnesses like heat stroke and heat exhaustion are considered emergencies, especially for brachycephalic breeds (think smushed faces!) like Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Pugs, Boxers, Shih Tzus, and Mastiffs. Even cats like Persians and Himalayans suffer quickly due to their squished noses. Look for signs like increased heart rate, excessive panting, sloppy drooling, disorientation, collapsing, and weakness.

Heartworm infections are completely preventable as long as pet parents are administering parasite prevention medications every month. It’s much less costly to prevent than to treat a pet with mature heartworms affecting their heart, lungs, and cardiovascular system. Symptoms include persistent cough, lethargy, weakness, difficulty breathing, and swollen abdomen. Take some time to learn how dogs get infected with heartworm, and talk to your primary care vet about appropriate preventatives–your pet will thank you!

If you notice your pet is having difficulty passing urine or is unable to urinate, it could indicate a blockage in the urinary tract, which can quickly become life-threatening. Some potential causes of difficulty/inability to urinate include urinary stones, urinary tract infections, urethral obstructions, tumors, or other underlying medical conditions. If left untreated, these conditions can lead to severe complications. Consider this an emergency that needs immediate attention.
