As a reminder, it is clinic policy that all dogs be leashed and all cats be either leashed or in a carrier while on the premises. We are updating this policy to prohibit the use of retractable leashes. We are happy to provide alternative leashes, which are usually available in the foyer. We appreciate your cooperation!

In 2020, Amos was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor on his muzzle. Unfortunately, it had already metastasized to his local lymph nodes when it was diagnosed. Oncologists gave him 3-6 months without treatment. But Amos always did things his way. He wasn't the most cooperative patient, but he always greeted us with a wagging tail and happy face. For four years, he continued to surprise us. We said goodbye earlier this week, but he went out with a bowl full of sugary, chocolatey treats and surrounded by the family and staff who loved him best. It was both a horrible and beautiful moment, filled with equal parts tears and laughter as we recounted memories of this ridiculously silly dog. He gave us more time than we ever could have hoped for, but it would never have been enough. We love you, Amos, and we hope you're chowing down on more snacks across the rainbow bridge. Thanks for all the smiles you gave us.❤

The American Animal Hospital Association has officially updated their guidelines to designate leptospirosis as a core vaccine. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease (meaning it can be transmitted from animals to people), difficult to diagnose, and often fatal. We strongly recommend getting your dog vaccinated if they aren't already!

The AAHA 2023 Canine Vaccination Guidelines have now officially been updated to reflect a change in status of the leptospirosis vaccine from non-core to core.

This is why it is so important that all dogs and cats be vaccinated against rabies. Bat bites are incredibly small and easily missed. If a bat gets into your home and bites your pet, you may not know. Rabies is a universally fatal disease. Vaccination of all pets, even if they never set foot outside, saves lives!

It has been reported to us that a bat has tested positive for rabies in the Harlem Township area. Please always take precautions if you or your family come in contact with a bat.

A thorough physical exam (PE) is the cornerstone of veterinary medicine. There are so many things you can miss without it. Countless times, physical exams have revealed issues that the pet's owner was completely unaware of. All decisions regarding diagnostic testing and treatment are influenced heavily by the physical exam. It may only take a few minutes, but it is an invaluable tool.

This video shows how a PE is performed, but even with as thorough as this explanation is, it misses out on some of the things that the doctors do without thinking (checking mucous membranes and capillary refill times, feeling the coat for masses, checking body condition scores, looking for signs of pain or muscle wasting, etc).

Ever wanted an inside look at veterinary medicine? Got burning questions about the field? Dr. Handler started a blog!
https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61566843273122

If you’re here, you’re probably a pet owner. Or maybe you’re a veterinary professional. Or perhaps you’re just curious about veterinary medicine. Whoever you are, whatever your role, welcome!

The purpose of this blog is to be a place where you can ask questions about the field of veterinary medicine and get an answer from someone on the inside. Why do we recommend certain tests for healthy pets? What exactly is heartworm disease? Why is your vet sending you to an emergency hospital when they’re open? Why are the wait times so damn long?

This blog isn’t a place to ask about your specific pet’s care. Legally, veterinary professionals cannot give medical advice for patients with whom they do not have a valid VCPR (veterinary client patient relationship). Which is a whole blog post in itself!

So, who am I?
I’m a local small animal veterinarian. At the time of writing, I’ve been practicing for ten years, though I’ve been a part of this field for over twenty. I’ve worked in multiple practices in multiple states. I’ve worked for corporate practices and privately owned practices. I’m passionate about client education, and I’m hoping to use this platform to reach a wider audience than my exam rooms permit.

It is with wildly heavy hearts, and a lot of tears that we share with you the passing of our clinic cat, Mr. Stubbs 🥺😭😢💔 To say our staff is absolutely heartbroken would be a vast understatement.

Mr. Stubbs was with CCVS for over 12 years and was a staple at our front desk for the entirety of his time here. He absolutely loved children, hated kittens and soaked up every bit of love he could get. He never shied away from scritches and he laid in his basket looking perfectly dapper, like the giant ham that he was!

On Starbucks days, which let’s be honest, are a lot of days 😉, he chased down every creamy drink he could, harassing the entire staff along the way trying to get his fix… knocking cups over, swatting at straws, trying to reach them on the shelves! He was no quitter lol ❤️

Heaven forbid we had any sweet treats brought in for the staff! It never mattered how many times we kicked him out of the kitchen, he always found his way back in attempting to get ALL of the treats! Knocking boxes onto the floor, eating peoples food, just being a general menace to society 🤣

Mr. Stubbs had a ton of personality and made lasting impressions on so many people he came in contact with. Enjoy some of our staff favorite pictures from over the years!

Please feel free to share your favorite pictures and/or memories of our Stubbs. We all already miss him so much and we look forward to reading your memories and seeing your pictures ❤️

All our love,

Your CCVS family
