Holiday Food & Company- Safety for pets.
Keep people food away from pets, and instruct everyone else to do the same. If you want to share holiday treats with your pets, make or buy treats formulated just for them. The following people foods are especially dangerous for pets:
• Chocolate is an essential part of holidays for many people,
• Other sweets and baked goods also should be kept out of reach.
• Table scraps – including gravy, sauces, dressing, and meat or poultry fat or skin – should be kept away from pets. During the holidays, when our own diets tend toward extra-rich foods, table scraps can be especially hard for pets to digest and can cause pancreatitis. Bones can cause choking or intestinal blockage. Plus, many foods that are healthy for people are poisonous to pets, including onions, raisins, and grapes.

As we head into winter, remember to look at your herd's body condition score. If you have a really skinny animal, it could be Johnes.
We can test for Johnes and help you create a plan for your herd to keep the disease out.

In a USDA study, 7.9% of U. S. cow-calf operations were found to contain one or more Johne’s positive cows.

Our BQA certification was a great success last night. With a full house in attendance, . Dr. Dorn's leadership, coupled with Dr. Bruce Hoffman's expertise in necropsy topics,
The collaboration with Elanco representatives, Dana Ramm and Dr. Jeremi Wurtz, as well as Addie Womack from the SD Extension office, showcased a robust partnership that benefitted everyone involved. The involvement of Becky Dorn and the pre-vet students from SDSU not only adds a fresh perspective but also helps in fostering future professionals in the field.
It's wonderful to hear that feedback from the local cattle producers with events like this. A huge thank you to all the participants along with our own team in house.

My Dog Ate Chocolate!
Don’t wait for visible signs if you witness or suspect your pet has ingested chocolate. The sooner a veterinary professional can intervene to counteract a toxic dose, the less likely your pet will be seriously harmed. Take these steps when your pet eats chocolate:
1. Assess the situation — Gather information about the chocolate type and amount your pet ate, including brand and product names. Try to find the product container or label with information about total weight and an ingredient list.
2. Contact your veterinarian or a pet poison hotline — Call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center for a veterinarian’s advice and to determine the seriousness of your pet’s chocolate ingestion.
3. Follow veterinary advice — Your veterinarian or toxicologist may offer differing advice depending on how much chocolate your dog ate, whether signs have developed, and how long you will take to arrive at the vet clinic. Never induce vomiting unless directed by a veterinary professional.
