AVIAN FLU PSA:
As bird migration season draws near there is an increased potential for cases in our area to rise. This puts our feline friends (and our backyard chicken flocks!) at a greater risk. It will be important to monitor your cat for sudden onset (24-48 hours or less) of illness as avian flu acts quickly and can be fatal if not caught early.

The most common exposure points of avian flu for cats is eating raw or under-cooked poultry products, hunting or scavenging wild birds, and contact with contaminated environmental objects like shoes or clothing worn near birds.

Illness may start with loss of appetite, lethargy, and fever, then quickly progress, with cats exhibiting:
⭐Respiratory signs, including rapid or difficulty breathing, and possibly sneezing or coughing.
⭐Heavy discharge from the nose and eyes
⭐Neurologic signs (e.g., ataxia [incoordination], circling, tremors, seizures, or blindness)
⭐Severe depression

What should you do if you suspect you cat has been exposed and is showing symptoms of avian flu?

Isolate the cat from other pets and people, thoroughly wash your hands before and after interacting with the cat and call your veterinarian immediately. Importantly, DO NOT bring your cat to a veterinarian before contacting them so that they can take appropriate precautions to protect your cat, other patients, and the whole veterinary team.
