Fear Free Nail Trims
Fear Free Fridays - Nail Trim Style!
Here are some Fear-Free Techniques that you can try when trimming your pet’s nails:
1) Establish a “touch gradient” by touching less sensitive areas first, then maintaining contact before reaching the more sensitive areas. 🖐🏼 In this video, Dr. Laura touches the shoulder/chest then slides her hand down to the paw. Many dogs are very sensitive about their paws, so establishing a #touchgradient before touching that sensi-paw is helpful! 😉
2) Counter-condition with your pet’s favorite treat! 🧀 #counterconditioning means changing your pet’s emotional response to a “scary” stimulus by building positive associations. You can use cheese, peanut butter treats, toys, praise, or anything else that your pet enjoys as your positive reinforcer.
3) Giving breaks when needed! 😮💨 If your pet is struggling, or they seem irritated, give them a break! If you force something that is too unpleasant for your pet, that will only increase their Fear, Anxiety, and Stress for future attempts. It is OK if you only trim 1-2 nails at a time.
4) Adjusting techniques. If your pet is extra paw-sensitive, you can try leaving their paws on the ground, and/or you can try to not even touch their paws at all! 🐾 We admit, this isn’t ideal to get the best angles and views of the quick, but sometimes it worth doing if your pet is showing higher levels of Fear, Anxiety, and Stress. 😵💫
5) This dog has generalized anxiety and dislikes having his paws touched. He gets two daily anti-anxiety medications + was on an additional medication for this visit. If low-stress techniques alone are not enough for your pet, there are medications that can help! 💊 We will touch more on this in future posts, and you are also welcome to call us if you have more questions.
