I never get “before” videos, so here’s one! This is Murphy, a 1 year old Golden Retriever that has been quite the menace at home. When I first got him in, he chewed through 4 leashes within SECONDS. And when leash pressure was applied, he would either sit back on the leash and chew through it, or he would come up the leash and try to bite me. He displays excitement reactivity, which means he gets so elevated in excitement he doesn’t know how to control his behavior yet. So the last two weeks I have shown him that he can trust me, I will always be fair to him, and that I am FUN! Forever making a bond with this kid! “Noodle” is doing so well with being attentive and listening to kids this age. Dogs do not see children as humans, they see them as a related species, which is why it’s so difficult to get them to listen to kids the same way they listen to adults. Some of you already know, but I got MYSELF a puppy!
His name is Menace, and he is a 15 week old Belgian Tervuran. My goals for him are to compete in Mondio Ring, which is a dog sport that contains a healthy mixture of obedience, protection, and impulse control.
Here we are starting him on “object guard” where he has to protect the object, and will need to bite the decoy if he is within 3 meters of him. Learning this sport has definitely changed the way I think of training in so many aspects, and has made me a better trainer all around.
I hope to bring that knowledge to all of my clients in one way or another!
Bodie took a stroll through the canyon with us yesterday! He is learning how to cope with his emotions through all situations, and a walk in nature is always great for that.
