State of the Shelter: Eaton Fire Update

Dear Bland,

I want to thank everyone in our community for the huge outpouring of support we've received in response to the Eaton Fire. We continue to welcome in all animals from the Eaton Fire that need our assistance.

As of today, CalFire has given us the go-ahead to begin sending strike teams into the burn areas. Local state and national animal welfare organizations, including Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control, San Diego Humane, ASPCA, and American Humane are working with Pasadena Humane to assist. We anticipate a heartbreaking scene when we arrive.

Animal Control Officers (ACOs) will bring any found animal back to Pasadena Humane, where they can be treated in our ICU for burns and other injuries. We will be setting out traps this evening, along with food and fresh water, in an effort to bring any cats and other animals who are in the area to safety. These traps will be gathered by our Animal Control Officers in the morning, allowing them to bring the animals back to the shelter for care.
Help Now

We are seeing a significant increase in the number of burned and injured animals coming to our shelter. These animals are suffering from smoke inhalation, singed paws, burns, dehydration, and more. We have been treating each animal based on their needs, providing fluids, oxygen, pain medications and wound care.

We are desperately in need of monetary donations to help us purchase medical supplies and other resources as needed. This is the best way to help the animals and families who are in need.

Unfortunately, we anticipate that our ACOs will also find deceased animals in the fire zones. We plan to return the remains to Pasadena Humane, where we can scan them for microchips and allow families to claim their pets for private burials.

Pasadena Humane staff and volunteers have been heroic while caring for animals and providing support to the community. We are so thankful for the support of other shelters and groups who have stepped up to offer reinforcements. Santa Barbara Humane, Sacramento SPCA, San Diego Humane, and Best Friends LA have all transported the adoptable animals that we had in our care to their facilities to allow us space to take in evacuated and stray animals. Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center have transported wildlife to their center as well.

We have a wonderful foster network on standby. We anticipate a large need for long-term foster homes in the next few days. Owned pets of those who have been evacuated are likely to need a place for their animals to be safely housed while they rebuild.

My heart goes out to all of those affected by the fires. This is a human and animal tragedy on an unimaginable scale. We are only beginning to learn of the full impact, and I'm so thankful that we haven't had to go through it alone. The aid from our community and surrounding animal welfare organizations has been incredibly moving. All we can do right now is take each day one step at a time while we try to prepare for what's to come.

As the Eaton Fire emergency continues, we are ready to take in many more animals who are in need of emergency medical care. If you are able to donate, please visit give.pasadenahumane.org/fire.

Thank you again for all of your support.
For the animals,
Dia DuVernet

Who we are

The Delta County Humane Society (DCHS) is a foster-based non-profit 501(c)(3) animal rescue that is dedicated to helping animals in need. We were established in 1981 and have been tirelessly helping all kinds of animals since our nascence.

We are located in the Delta County area in Colorado with a goal to inspire animal compassion within our community. We are a small team of dedicated individuals that foster animals out of our homes and go to great lengths to rehabilitate and find the perfect homes for our animals. We are a lesser known animal rescue in the Delta County area because we are so small and have limited resources. We wish to broaden our exposure to the area and hopefully inspire more people to become fosters or support DCHS in any way they can. If you would like to know more about us and if you want to get involved please send us a message!

XOXO,

DCHS Team
