A little patience and understanding can go a long way…! As a farrier we have all been there, young horse, first appointment of the day and they just don’t want to cooperate. What started as an easy trim turns out to be a lesson for the horse in some behavior skills and showing some manners and respect for the horse owner and the farrier. It’s important to take the time to understand the horses background and meet on some common ground to have a positive and safe experience to advance the mental state of the horse forward for the next appointment and give positive and constructive training aids to the horse owner. It’s not always easy, but will ultimately be the best case forward.

This is a great article to read and helps explain what the benefits of a good working relationship between your veterinarian and farrier can offer in keeping your horse sound if it has problematic hoof issues.🐎

Quality radiographs are pivotal for veterinarians and farriers when providing a horse and its owner proper therapeutic hoof care.

It’s with a heavy heart I learned of the passing of Jake Lohmeyer. Many of us knew him through the years and I would occasionally cross paths with Jake at a barn or two once in awhile. We never spent much time talking because we were usually there to get a job done and get on to the next one so to speak. My last interaction with him was a few months back when we all had mud up to our knees and Jake was kind enough to lend me a rag to clean up a horse I had to tack a shoe back on. We took a few minutes to chat and catch up on the state of things as we saw it and it was back to work and on down the road. It’s the small acts of kindness that add up in the end and determine the impact we make to the people around us. Rest easy with the Lord cowboy and know you will be missed and you that you made a positive impact on so many of the lives you touched.

Before and after photos. Thin walled horses can have trouble adapting to harder ground conditions. A solid balanced shoe job can give them the extra support they need to allow the foot to grow out and become manageable

It's fun to work on drafts when you have the right equipment! Prince is a 20 hand carriage horse who along with his 3 other companions belong to Char and Bob Morrison from Liberty Center. I installed Scotch Bottom shoes on the front and side weights with trailers on the back. Bondo will get filled in to close the shoes on the front and gives the appearance of a larger foot. The Scotch shoes allow for a quicker breakover and gives better leg action to the horse. Originally the animals were allowed to flare and would fill the shoe naturally, this kept them from sinking in the mudd when working in the bogs or pulling logs from the forest.
