At Born Running Ranch, a premier mare care and foaling facility, our goal is to allow the horses to live lives that closely mirror the natural environment they enjoyed before human intervention; space, social groups and grazing time are three of our priorities. The resident mares are grouped into small bands and allowed grazing rights to our 80+ acres of irrigated pasture, designed for year-round access thanks to the mild climate enjoyed in southern New Mexico. We believe that by creating as natural of an environment as possible, the farms healthy, contented horses can better excel at their jobs.
At larger farms, it is easy for horses to slip through the cracks of a busy breeding season. However, at Born Running Ranch, we keep our numbers small enough to provide individualized attention. We not only know each horse by name, but we can readily give a synopsis of each resident's behavior, habits and personality quirks that dictate how we care for each horse on a personalized level.
Experience
My staff combines equine-tailored educations with extensive industry experience in all aspects of equine handling and care - whether in dealing with stallions, mares, foals, weanlings or yearlings. We translate all our education and experience in equine behavior and breeding practices into day-to-day management of our horses.
Facilities
At Born Running Ranch, we offer over 80 acres of irrigated pasture for year-round grazing in the mild climate of southern New Mexico. We maintain large grazing pastures as well as smaller grassy paddocks equipped with foal-safe fencing for mare and foal turnout. In the 16-stalled barn, stalls are 12 feet x 12 feet with dutch doors that open into attached runs (stall dividers open into spacious 12 feet x 24 feet foaling stalls). Born Running offers lighted pens
to encourage early cycles in broodmares, isolation areas to prevent and control disease and a round-pen and walker for yearling training.
Mare Care
At Born Running, the combination of turnout, individualized attention and commitment to vaccination and deworming protocol gives this facility the best mare care in the state. The over 80 acres of irrigated pasture is supplemented with home-grown alfalfa, grain rations and free-choice minerals to meet the nutritional needs of pregnant, lactating and growing horses. We not only know each horse by name but also know each trick of their distinctive personalities. We know which mares pair up as friends, who bosses the herd, who tends to get shuffled towards the bottom of the pecking order and who never misses a meal. This personalized knowledge works to our advantage. We understand our horses better, and thus the interactions are smoother. We can quickly spot when something is out of the ordinary and recognize potential problems before they erupt.
Foaling
Born Running Ranch offers 24-hour surveillance and the Foal Alert system. All the mares foal out in the spacious foaling stalls, but they also enjoy daytime turnout in grassy paddocks until the foals are old enough to live outside round the clock. Research has shown that foals who have room to run and play build stronger muscles and bone, an important preparation for an athletic career. In addition, when these groups of mares and foals interact, the foals can learn to mimic important adult social skills. We take the time to handle all the foals, so they are acclimated to being haltered, led and having their feet picked up.
Breeding Management
At Born Running Ranch, we understand the financial importance to our clients of getting their mares in foal in a timely fashion. Thus we offer lighted pens to encourage early cycles in broodmares. For Quarter Horses we offer low reproductive cost for shipped semen and artificial insemination.
Yearling Sales Prep
We offer experienced pre-sale training for your yearlings, a proven program of excellent nutrition, grooming and exercise designed to spotlight each yearling in the best light possible.
