We often get asked: Can I use my dog’s kennel as place? Ally explains why it’s best to keep the place and kennel commands separate.
The kennel command tells your dog to go into their crate—usually with the door closed, so they have no choice but to stay inside.
The place command, however, sends your dog to a designated spot (like a bed or mat), where they stay until released. Unlike the crate, place has no physical barriers—just mental boundaries. Your dog makes the choice to stay put.
Both commands serve different purposes but are equally valuable for structure and calm behavior.

Ally explains what a ‘fear period’ looks like in puppies. Fear periods typically occur twice in a puppy’s life—once between 8-11 weeks old and again between 6-14 months. These periods usually last 2-3 weeks and can cause your puppy to seem unusually cautious or reactive to things that didn’t bother them before.
During this time, using positive reinforcement is key to ensuring your puppy doesn’t associate these experiences with negative emotions. Consulting a professional dog trainer can provide tailored advice and guidance to help you and your puppy navigate this phase successfully.

Bringing out the exercise ball for some fun!
This is something called “canine conditioning,” which involves exercises that help improve general fitness. This exercise helps these dogs build their core strength, improving balance, stability, and agility. It can also possibly help prevent injuries later down the line.
Just a little something we like to do with Refresher dogs to keep their bodies and minds active and learning.

Only calling your dog to take away their fun/freedom!
If the only time you use the words “(name) come” is when you’re trying to:
👎Get them inside from the backyard
👎Leave the dog park
👎Put them in a kennel
👎Do something the dog finds unpleasant (bath, nails, etc)
👎Take something away from them (sock, shoe, bone, etc)
👎Scold them (example: I called you, you didn’t come, and when you finally come to me I reprimand you)
You’re doing it wrong! By doing this, you’re teaching your dog that coming to you = negative consequences.
So how can we fix this? The answer is simple: stop doing that👆!
Instead, call your dog:
👍Randomly inside & outside and RELEASE them back to their fun, this will help your dog learn you’re not the fun police
Example: dog is in the backyard, call them to you & give a treat, then let them go back to running around
👍Always give a reward for coming
Especially when just starting out! Coming to me = good things!
👍When you know they’ll come
If you know your don’t won’t recall off a squirrel, don’t call them. Keep a leash on in situations/environments you know your dog struggles with
