With no context or history you might think this yawn means he’s uncomfortable with my petting. But it’s actually one of his favourite things. I sat down and he turned his butt towards me to ask for scratches. I see this yawn as a settling in and relaxing sort of behaviour. That’s why it’s important to see individual body language signals as part of the whole picture and to recognize the context they’re happening in. One movement can have many meanings depending on when it’s happening.

Gus was VERY suspicious of these Halloween decorations! Thanks to all his training from his incredible team he was able to accept support from me. We turned away and added distance. Then we looked at it together from a spot where he felt comfortable. We moved closer incrementally as he was able to get information about it. Once we got up to it a quick sniff told him it was nothing to worry about. But they sure looked freaky!
