Meet Shelby! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿข Our team recently treated a Chinese box turtle named Shelby, who had been referred to us after swallowing a button battery.

Dr. Rose performed an endoscopy and after about an hour and a half, she and our amazing team of veterinary assistants were able to flush the battery out using a large quantity of saline. Shelby recovered well from the procedure and was able to go home later that same day! ๐Ÿ’™

Our doctors are so good, exotic animals canโ€™t stay away! A few foxes stopped by Dr. Ruoffโ€™s house early in the morning. ๐ŸฆŠ Encounters like this are a great reminder that we share our neighborhoods with wildlife, and itโ€™s important to be good neighbors by:

- Not leaving human or pet food / garbage in areas where they will become habituated to humans or being fed
- Keeping your pets safe from wildlife interactions (i.e. keep pets indoors unless they are supervised or protected)
- Protecting your pets from diseases through vaccinations and parasite preventative medications
- Not touching the wildlife! We can tell you from experience that although they are adorable, round, and fluffy --raccoon bites HURT. If you need help with a wild animal, call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for assistance or resources.
- Planting native vegetation in your yard for natural food sources, and leaving some of your landscaping up to nature (such as leaving the leaves in the fall). You can find more ideas and even get your yard certified as wildlife habitat here: https://certifiedwildlifehabitat.nwf.org/
- Providing a safe water source if you are able (must be running and filtered to prevent mosquitoes and disease spread)

Meet Kahlua, a 6-month-old guinea pig who came to our hospital for a routine prophylactic spay.

Spaying is an important procedure that helps prevent serious reproductive issues like ovarian disease and uterine cancer, which are unfortunately common in middle-aged female guinea pigs. We recommend spaying guinea pigs between 4 and 12 months of age, when theyโ€™re young and healthy, for a smoother recovery.

Dr. Lewis performed Kahluaโ€™s spay, and she did great during surgery and recovered quickly! At her one-week post-op checkup, Kahlua was already healed and back to her happy, active self. Thank you for coming in, Kahlua! ๐Ÿ’™

She exceeds expectations by setting high standards for herself and for others, and she is supportive and encouraging for others to reach those standards. Almost weekly, Mary comes to management with ideas on how to improve our practice, including taking time to create clear or step-by-step guides for complex clinical procedures, equipment maintenance, or protocols. She keeps an open mind for new ideas but also critiques them constructively to ensure they will accomplish their goals. We appreciate all of Mary's hard work, not just for COEAH but for the entire group of hospitals, their doctors, and their staff. Thank you, Mary! ๐Ÿ’™

Before veterinary school, Dr. Noto participated in research in the fields of veterinary parasitology and catfish infectious diseases. Dr. Noto remained at Mississippi State University for his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, graduating in 2021. While in veterinary school, he participated in animal shelter demographic research leading to animal shelter surveys in 5 states including Colorado as well as becoming the inaugural epidemiology preceptor at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington DC. Dr. Noto is the recipient of the Deanโ€™s Pegasus Award, which is the highest award given to a member of the graduating class.

Following veterinary school, he moved to Colorado to pursue passions in avian and exotic medicine and surgery, geriatric care, and end of life care. Dr. Noto has many pets including a dog named Nutella, a cat named Toast, two red foot tortoises named Orlando and Epps, an ivory ball python named Tusk, and a Kenyan sand boa named Wakali.

When not working, Dr. Noto enjoys riding his motorcycle, birding, wildlife photography, and spending time cooking with friends. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Welcome to the team Dr. Noto! ๐Ÿ’™
