Introducing our employee pet of the month, Rotini! 🐍💙

This is Dr. Lykins 3 year old western hognose, she got Rotini while she was in vet school in Florida. Rotini is a full sized male and his specific morph is called a Toffee Belly, which gives him his spots and a uniquely colored ventrum! One of Rotini’s favorite things to do is dig tunnels.

Introducing our employee pet of the month, Slinky! 💙

Slinky is a 15 year old blue-tongued skink, adopted by Dr. Ruoff in 2014 after her previous owner could no longer care for her. She is a wonderful, curious, and interactive pet. She is very smart -- she has to touch a target, solve a puzzle, and/or forage for her food. She can even solve feeding puzzles meant for dogs and cats! Slinky's talents have been featured in lectures, conferences, magazines, and even advertisements for reptile enrichment. She is also the host of our "Secret Slinky" employee gift exchange (even though she's sometimes naughty), and she has her own holiday stocking for gifts. She and Dr. Ruoff want to wish all of our clients and patients a safe and happy holiday season! ✨💙

It’s hard to age baby desert tortoises! In the wild, Arizona desert tortoises (G. morafkai) usually grow one small ring around their center scute until they are about 10 years old. In captivity, they can have several growth rings form and they are often bigger/wider rings than what occurs in the wild. 🐢

Recently, one of our jokester clients brought in this "stool" sample. 🤣 Dr. Ruoff is also a huge fan of puns -- she has a "stool" sample she received as a graduation present on her desk.
We can actually learn a lot from evaluating an animal's stool sample, and we often recommend a f***l examination as a non-invasive diagnostic test for our patients. If your pet produces a stool sample prior to their exam, please call to determine whether it should be collected and how it can safely be brought in for evaluation.

Dr. Lykins was chosen as this month’s shining star because she has done an outstanding job jumping right into Doctor role here in Colorado. She has exponentially exceeded our expectations and continues to do so daily. She puts exceptional care into every case she takes on and is willing to take on almost anything despite being an intern and a new graduate. Her level of compassion, open-mindedness, and positivity has been exemplary. We are so glad you are here, Dr. Lykins, you are a powerful addition and an asset to the team! We hope you stick around! You are a keeper!

We have BIG news! Our Denver location now has a CT machine. CT (computed tomography) is a diagnostic imaging modality that uses a series of x-rays in a rotation to obtain detailed three dimensional (3D) images or internal "slices" of the body. This technique can be a better option than plain x-rays for evaluating internal organs, planning for surgery, examining the skull and teeth, and being able to visualize inside of a turtle or tortoise's shell!

Our staff and doctors are now trained on CT, and the machine is fully operational. We appreciate our training volunteers, including Suez (Dr. Ruoff's Uromastyx) and Dewey (technician Maddi's Boa constrictor). Suez was sedated for her scan, which is why her eyes are closed -- she is healthy!

If you are interested in a CT scan for your pet, please schedule an examination with our doctors so we can give our best recommendations.
