Happy 4th of July from our team to you! As a reminder, we will be CLOSED on July 4th. We’ll be open until 5:30 today and be back open Friday morning, so please reach out if you have any questions or needs for your pet prior to the holiday.

As we gather to celebrate with family and friends, let's not forget our furry companions! Here are some tips to keep your pets safe and calm during the festivities:

🎇 Create a Safe Space: Make sure your pets have a quiet, comfortable place to retreat away from the noise if need be.
🐶 Keep Them Indoors: Fireworks can be frightening for pets. Keep them indoors and secure windows and doors.
🐱 Update ID Tags: Ensure your pets' ID tags and microchip information are up to date, just in case they get scared and run off.
🐾 Avoid Fireworks: Never use fireworks around pets. They can cause severe burns and trauma.
🎆 Watch the BBQ: Be mindful of what your pets eat. Certain foods can be harmful to them.

Wishing everyone a safe and joyful 4th of July!

April is National Heartworm Awareness Month! 🦟 ❤️
Are your dogs protected against heartworm disease? We recommend heartworm testing regularly and year-round heartworm prevention for all dogs in Colorado! Scroll to learn more about heartworm disease and the importance of monthly prevention.

❤️ What is heartworm disease?
- Heartworm is a disease that is caused by a parasite spread through mosquito bites. Once an animal becomes infected, the larvae develop into adult worms and migrate through the blood vessels and to the heart. Most clinical signs don’t occur until years after pets become infected, so we perform regular heartworm tests to ensure we catch it early prior to development of severe clinical signs! If undetected and untreated, adult worms can become up to a foot in length and cause serious clinical signs, including coughing, wheezing, and fainting, and can be fatal.

❤️ How can we protect our pets from heartworm disease?
- Monthly preventatives are an easy and effective way to prevent your pets from becoming infected! We can’t avoid mosquitoes, so a monthly tablet such as Interceptor or Heartgard ensures that even dogs exposed to mosquitoes will be protected from developing heartworm disease. We also recommend testing for heartworms regularly to ensure that if a dog does test positive, we can treat it before irreversible changes to the heart occur.

❤️ Do we really need to give heartworm prevention year-round in Colorado?
- YES! If you look at the 2022 incidence map attached, in the Colorado front range each veterinary clinic saw between 6-25 positive cases per year. We suspect the number of truly positive cases in Denver is even higher, given that many dogs aren’t regularly tested and more dogs are coming up from rescues in the south. Treating heartworm disease is expensive, painful, and challenging, so prevention is HIGHLY recommended year-round.

If you have any questions, please reach out - your veterinarian would be happy to discuss more about heartworm disease, testing and prevention with you!
