A study finds more dogs escape from invisible fences than any other type. What are your experiences with invisible fencing?

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/LzBPy5Uhjx5PoV3e/?mibextid=WC7FNe

How secure are electric fences?

A survey of 974 dog owners asked how their dogs were confined to the yard, whether they had escaped. The results showed that an electronic fence was the LEAST effective method of containing a dog: 44% of dogs contained by one had escaped. Dogs were less likely to have escaped from a tether (27%) or from a see-through fence (e.g. chain link or slatted wood) (23%) or a privacy fence that is not see-through (also 23%). Escape rates were not associated with how dogs were trained on them.

Took Takoda, now 1 year old, out on his first real, long hike. He carried snacks and water in his backpack. We had the trail to ourselves for 2 hrs. Then we saw another hiker coming up the trail as we stopped to have a snack.

Takoda still being an adolescent, still having new experiences wasn’t sure about this strange person. He huffed and growled until the man came closer and said hello. Using counter conditioning I was able to change the emotional response from
Fear to acceptance.

Takoda was able to watch the hiker pass us and continue up the trail. He did keep his eye on him and when out of sight looked at me to say “all clear” and then happily we began our decent down the mountain side.

It is a reminder and really important to understand that dogs physical maturity is faster than their mental maturity. Large breeds mature slower than smaller breeds. We need to help support them and create positive association with new experiences.

The trickle-down theory at work. When you base your relationship with your dogs on trust and use reward-based training methods your dogs will be able to share toys, bones, and space.

Leading by Example: Think of yourself as the top of the pack structure. Just like in trickle-down economics, where the actions and policies at the top level influence the lower levels, your behavior sets the tone for your dogs. By consistently demonstrating positive, calm, and controlled behavior, you become a role model for your dogs. They observe and learn from your actions, which can encourage them to emulate these behaviors with each other.

Creating a Secure Environment: In the same way that economic stability promotes well-being and security, creating a stable and predictable environment through trust-based, reward-oriented training can foster a sense of security among your dogs. This stability encourages harmonious interactions and resource sharing.

Encouraging Cooperation with Rewards: In your role, you're distributing resources (treats, attention, toys). When your dogs see that cooperative behavior, like sharing toys, is rewarded, they are more likely to repeat it.

Promoting Abundance Over Competition: By ensuring that resources are not scarce and competition is unnecessary, you reduce potential conflicts over these resources. Teaching your dogs "take it" helps your dogs learn that you give them resources.

Understanding Individual Needs: Tailoring your approach to each dog's unique personality and needs. This helps in fostering mutual respect and understanding among your dogs, as they learn to coexist and adapt to each other's presence.

Veterinary laboratories in several states are investigating an unusual respiratory illness in dogs. Oregon, Colorado and New Hampshire are among the states that have seen cases of the illness.

BEWARE OF THE QUICK FIX!
There are no quick fixes when it comes to lasting, successful behaviour change, whether with ourselves or with our dogs.

Want to lose weight? The quick fix of diet pills, meal replacements or slimming machines may initially be successful, but is unlikely to last. Long term success will require effort, a change in mind set, being mindful of emotions, eating less or differently and exercising – there is no quick fix.

Want to get a qualification? Hard work, long hours, commitment and effort is the only way.

The same principle applies to bringing about a change in behaviour.

We live in a society where we want and expect quick fixes. Our lives are often so busy, stressful and complicated enough without having to even think about spending time and effort in trying to “fix” our dog’s problems.

Why not just use a shock collar, choke chain, spray bottle, shake can or send them off to a board and train facility to quickly sort them out without us having to put in any time or effort? What about a trainer that guarantees quick results? There are never any guarantees when it comes to behaviour.

Stay away from quick fixes – they usually come at a great cost. Yes, they may suppress that particular behaviour but it is likely to surface in another way and we won’t like that either.

Changing behaviour takes time, it requires understanding, consistency, patience and commitment, but the results of “fixing” something the right way, are worth it.

This quote by Wayne Muller sums this up perfectly “In the soil of the quick fix is the seed to a new problem….”

Here what a well renowned Animal Behaviorist has to say about being careful about who you select as a dog trainer.

As an Certified Dog Behavior Consultant with a Master Degree in Animal Behavior and 30 years experience working with dogs, llamas and wildlife animals, it saddens me to see, hear, and learn about those persons calling themselves dog trainers who use aversive training techniques.

It is not necessary to use punishment and aversive training tools ( Shock, Choke or Prong Collars) to get a well trained dog. Even dogs who are considered stubborn, independent, “working”, “high drive” or energetic sporting breeds.

Having worked with and titled Alaskan Malamutes, Karelian Bear Dogs, Livestock Guard Dogs, Weimaraner, and Border Terriers. In addition to training Wolves, Mountain Lions. Canada Lynx, Bobcat, Coyotes, Foxes. Bears, and Raptors, all using positive reinforcement based methods. I can attest that it works and has an lasting results😃

A great visualization of how accumulation of small stressors can add up and cause your dog to become reactive. Trigger stacking is the term used to describe the process for dogs. Road rage is an example for humans.

🐾 Embracing the Dog Sociability Spectrum 🐾

🐾 Did you know that just like humans, dogs have their own sociability spectrum? 🐾

🐶 Not all dogs are social butterflies, and that's okay! It's important to understand and respect their individual temperaments. 🐾

📊 Imagine a bell curve where a small portion of dogs are highly social and love interacting with other dogs, while the largest portion in the middle are dog-selective. They may enjoy the company of a few trusted furry friends but prefer to keep their distance from unfamiliar dogs. 📊

🐾 On the other end of the spectrum, a small portion of dogs may exhibit reactive or aggressive behavior towards other dogs. It's crucial to recognize and address their specific needs to ensure everyone's safety. 🐾

🌟 Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all when it comes to canine sociability. By respecting each dog's preferences and providing appropriate guidance, we can create a harmonious environment for all furry friends. 🌟

🐾 It's important to note that many dogs "age out" of frequenting doggie daycare and dog parks as they mentally mature between 2-4 years of age. Their social needs and preferences may change as they grow, and it's essential to adapt our activities accordingly. 🐾

⭐️ At Clever Canine Academy, we embrace the dog sociability spectrum and promote positive reinforcement training methods. Our certified dog behavior consultants are dedicated to building trust and achieving long-lasting results through reward-based training. ⭐️

🐾 Celebrate the uniqueness of every dog and spread the word about the dog sociability spectrum! 🐾
