😇Teaching dogs in a multi-dog household to “wait” at the door is so important to prevent unwanted bolting and guarding behaviors at the doorway. Nikita the larger malamute was hesitant because I have been working on building a solid “stay”. Takoda, the 12 week old puppy , doesn’t know wait or “free” the release word yet. I was blocking the doorway to prevent him from moving when I released Jax. I had to take steps backwards out the door and encourage him to follow me. I follow up with a treat. DM me if you would be interested in a puppy or manners course. I am recording my training with Takoda and will release the courses in a membership library.

🐾. Stand Still and Stay Calm 😌🎥 Check out this incredible moment with my Alaskan Malamute, Nikita, and my Border Terrier, Jax! They're learning the art of watching squirrels and staying calm. * Step 1: * Praise and Use the Marker Word "YES" when they stand still. Positive reinforcement is key! ca * Step 2: J. Employ the Positive Interrupter (kissy sound) to redirect their attention from the squirrel back to me. * Step 3: . Say "YES" as they turn back towards me, acknowledging their response and reinforcing the desired behavior. * Step 4: %. Reward their amazing focus with a high-value treat, making it an irresistible experience! * Bonus Step: # Practice the Positive Interrupter in less intense distractions or while they're sniffing. This builds muscle memory and a strong history of responding to the sound. # Capture these training moments, building a stronger bond with your dog. When I first started training my Alaskan Malamutes in the early 90s, I believed in the dominant theory and used aversive methods such as choke collars, prong collars, shock collars, and alpha roll-overs to correct their behavior. However, I soon realized that these methods were actually increased my dogs stubborn, aggressive, and less cooperative behaviors. They would run away, growl, and never make eye contact, and were reluctant to learn new behaviors, that now I understand is because of fear of corrections. How dogs communicate they do not want a conflict is to avert their eyes, to turn their back, to slow down the pace, and to increase the distance from the aggressor. This was the opposite of what I wanted and needed to compete in AKC obedience competition.
As a responsible pet owner with three small children, I knew I needed to change my approach. I had heard that "aggression begets aggression," so I attended Karen Pryor seminars on reinforcement training. There, I learned to appreciate my dogs' instincts and genetics, and I became their guide, teacher, and trainer, not their master.
Instead of using dominance and fear to control my dogs,
🐾 I established rules and structure that would keep them safe and teach them how to behave in a human environment. For example, I taught them to wait at the top or bottom of the stairs until I gave permission to climb, and to lay on their dog beds while we ate.
🐾 I also introduced reward-based reinforcement training techniques, which focused on rewarding desired behaviors, teaching them what behaviors I DID want them to do and WHEN to do those behaviors, as well as managing the environment, so they did not practice unwanted behaviors.
Within six months, my dogs had earned their AKC Obedience Titles with high earning scores and became Canine Good Citizens.
They were selected to be "spokes dogs" for three years in a row at the county fair, demonstrating that even big, tough Alaskan Malamutes can be trained wi
Train Often. Train in Bits. Learn the secret of how a dog trainer with Alaskan Malamutes is able to keep their attention and willingness to learn obedience.
Having owned and trained Alaskan Malamutes for obedience competitions, I learned the secret to keeping attention and having a Mal who loves to train.
Here's what I have learned :
➡️ Short sessions keep your dog's attention: Dogs have short attention spans, so it's important to keep training sessions brief and engaging. This will help prevent boredom and keep your dog focused on the task at hand.
➡️ Consistency is key: Regular, short training sessions can help build a strong and consistent training routine, which is essential for your dog's learning and development.
➡️ Avoid Overwhelming: Breaking training into shorter sessions can help you and your dog avoid feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. It's easier for both of you to learn and practice new commands when the sessions are less demanding.
➡️ Another SECRET- Errorless learning. In errorless learning, I start with simple tasks that the dog is highly likely to perform correctly, and then gradually increase the difficulty of the tasks as the dog becomes more skilled and confident. If you have to say "no, eh-eh", that is an indication you are asking the dog to do a task that is more difficult than they are ready for.
➡️ Reinforcement is more effective: Shorter sessions allow you to reinforce good behavior more frequently, which can help strengthen the behavior and make it more likely to become permanent.
A short training session can last anywhere from 5-15 minutes, depending on your dog's attention span and level of engagement. It's important to note that every dog is different, and some dogs may need longer or shorter sessions based on their individual needs and abilities.
The key is to find a duration that works well for both you and your dog. If your dog starts to lose focus or become disinterested, it's a sign to wrap up th
Many people think of sniffing as simply a way for dogs to explore and find interesting smells, but it's actually much more than that. In fact, recent research has shown that sniffing plays a crucial role in a dog's physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
1: Physical Benefits
● Sniffing is a form of exercise for a dog's brain.
● Sniffing can also improve a dog's overall physical health.
● Sniffing may also help dogs to detect and avoid danger.
2: Mental and Emotional Benefits
● Sniffing can reduce stress and anxiety in dogs.
● Sniffing can also improve cognitive function in dogs.
● Sniffing can also help dogs to form stronger bonds with their owners.
3.Nose Work for Fearful and Reactive Dogs
● Nose work can help fearful and reactive dogs to feel more confident and secure.
● Nose work can also help to build trust and communication between dogs and
their owners.
● Nose work can also be used as a form of behavioral therapy for dogs with
specific issues.
Sniffing is an essential part of a dog's life and plays a crucial role in their welfare. It provides physical, mental and emotional benefits, and can also help to improve the behavior of fearful and reactive dogs.
