Hello HOLA family,
Please help support an exciting fundraising opportunity taking place right now! If HOLA can raise $5,000 from 40 donors in the next two weeks, we will achieve a permeant presence on the Global Giving website. This will widen our donor base and greatly improve the numbers of people we can help. All proceeds will go to improving access to specialized health care services for woman living in the rural community of La Ceiba, Nicaragua. Follow the link below. Thank you for your support.

Some good news in these uncertain times. With great care, HOLA has been able to continue to its OBGYN program with Dr. Zelaya and Dr. Chevez (pictured here) working at the clinics in Chacraseca and La Leona respectively. Across both clinics the Doctors had over 100 patient consultations (103 to be exact). We are thrilled to continue to be able to provide care to so many women and want to extend our deep gratitude to all those who continue to keep this program running!

Some good news in these uncertain times! HOLA has hired its second OBGYN Dr. Leyla Chevez to work two mornings a week in the clinic in La Leona outside of Leon. We hope this hire, in conjunction with our existing OBGYN program, should help us provide access to obstetric and gynecological care to over 1,000 women in the next 12 months. Thank you as always to all the wonderful people who made this happen. Your support means the world! 😀

Merry Christmas everyone. 2019 has been a great year for HOLA. Our OBGYN program has continued to be a great success, providing access to obstetric and gynecological services to women living in rural communities in Nicaragua. By year’s end we expect over 500 women to have visited the clinic in Chacraseca. In the next few months, we plan to hire a second OBGYN to work in a clinic in La Leona, hopefully expanding our reach to over 1,000 women annually. 2020 should also see volunteers return to Nicaragua to work on a variety of programs including the implementation of a permanent s*xual education curriculum in Chacraseca in partnership with the local schools there. If you have a few extra pennies and cents left over this Christmans, all donations, no matter how big or small, will make a huge difference.

Happy New Year All,

A quick review for the last two months of 2018:

Dr. Zelaya had 72 visitors to the clinic in the month of November and a further 38 in December. These numbers include women seeking gynecological services for the first time and women receiving consistent treatments. This brings the grand total of visits to the clinic to 564 for 2018. HOLA is immensely proud of all the work Dr. Zelaya is doing and the amount of woman receiving improved access to specialized healthcare at the clinic.

Other success stories include HOLAs involvement in the Medical Fairs hosted in Perla Maria on November 17 and December 5th. The fairs aimed to provide a wide array of medical services, veterinary services and educational opportunities to people living in rural communities outside Leon. Providers included MINSA, the University of Leon and the Ministry for Veterinary Services. There were over 2,700 attendees at the November 17 fair and an even larger number at the December 5th fair. HOLA purchased a total of 800 speculums to be used at the two fairs.

Our goals for 2019 include hiring a second gynecologist, returning volunteers to the country, implementing a s*x ed program and building a full time staff in Nicaragua. A huge thank you to everyone reading this and to all those whose support have helped HOLA continue to provide aid to those people in need throughout a number of rural communities in Nicaragua.

THANK YOU AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Incredibly proud to report that Dr. Zelaya has been able to assist 92 women at the Chacraseca Clinic in the month of October, treating ailments in-house where possible and referring patients on to the hospital in Leon in more serious cases.

Over the last year the presence of a Gynecologist in the Chacraseca clinic has helped women identify and cure a number of conditions that would have otherwise gone unnoticed or untreated. October appears to have been no exception.

HOLA remains committed to using our presence in the clinic to not only diagnose and treat patients visiting the clinic, but as a platform to create targeted educational programs that address recurring healthcare problems in the area.

Thank you as always to Dr. Zelaya for her enormous efforts and to all our donors who continue to make this work possible.

HOLA from H.O.L.A!

The last 12 months have been an interesting time for the organization. The recent political unrest and subsequent violence that swept the country have caused much hardship for the people of Nicaragua and disrupted our ability to take trips in-country.

However, as some normalcy returns to the country we have many reasons for optimism.

September marked the one year anniversary of Dr. Maria Zelaya’s (pictured here) tenure with the organization. Dr Maria has been working as a Gynecologist in the clinic in Chacraseca, providing specialized healthcare services to women throughout that rural community. In that time, Dr. Zelaya has seen over 500 patients. In the coming months we hope to use her wealth of experience to launch more targeted healthcare missions to Chacraseca.

September also saw a change in leadership for the organization. Nic Alvey has stepped into position of Chairman. Nic is one of the original co-founders of the HOLA Foundation and served as its first Director of Operations for three years. He has been a board member since 2012. His passion for the organization and experience as medical professional promises great things for the H.O.L.A.

Joe Parker has also stepped in the Executive Director Role. Joe is far newer to the organization but hopes to improve its operational efficiency, while striving to create a more consistent and sustainable in-country presense in Nicaragua.

It is our hope, in the coming months to keep our followers better informed on the wonderful work that Dr. Zelaya is doing along with all of H.O.L.A’s goals and successes….
