Hey fur-parents! 🐶
Did you know baby puppies can sleep between 18 to 20 hours a day?
YES, sleep is a big deal for pups, but as puppies grow, their sleep patterns become more regular, with longer stretches of sleep at night and fewer naps during the day. This gradual change supports their physical and cognitive development.
Here's a detailed look at how these patterns evolve:
Neonatal Period (0-2 weeks):
- Sleep Duration: Newborn puppies sleep almost 22 hours a day, waking only to nurse and eliminate waste.
- Sleep Pattern: Sleep is constant and uninterrupted, essential for rapid growth and development.
Transitional Period (2-4 weeks):
- Sleep Duration: Still very high, around 18-20 hours per day.
- Sleep Pattern: Puppies begin to develop senses and start to interact with their environment, but sleep remains a primary activity.
Socialization Period (3-12 weeks):
- Sleep Duration: Gradually decreases but remains high at 18-20 hours per day.
- Sleep Pattern: Puppies start to have more defined wake and sleep cycles, with frequent naps throughout the day.
4 Months Old:
- Sleep Duration: Around 11-14 hours per day.
- Sleep Pattern: Puppies begin to sleep longer stretches at night and have fewer, shorter naps during the day. They are more active and engage in social interactions and training.
5-6 Months Old:
- Sleep Duration: Approximately 10-12 hours per day.
- Sleep Pattern: More consistent nighttime sleep with fewer daytime naps. Puppies are more settled in their routines and can handle longer periods of wakefulness.
Adolescence (6-12 months):
- Sleep Duration: Around 10-12 hours per day.
- Sleep Pattern: Sleep becomes more similar to adult dogs, with longer nighttime sleep and fewer daytime naps. Adolescence can bring sleep regressions due to growth spurts or teething.
Adulthood (12 months and older):
- Sleep Duration: Typically, 12-14 hours per day.
- Sleep Pattern: Adult dogs have a more stable sleep pattern, with most sleep occurring at ni
BEHIND THE SCENES AT NOBLE BEAST!
Here is a behind the scenes look at a text to Co-Owner, Mindy Jarvis, received from a client who has had multiple dogs in Noble Beast Training for over 15 years.
Domino, mentioned in the text below, is a rescue from @BigDogsHugePaws and was used for breeding Great Danes. She is the sweetest girl, but did not know life until she was adopted - so had no experience with dogs, with people, with life. She was enrolled in our Camp B.A.R.K. program and in that, she has a place each week she can go where she feels emotionally safe enough to let loose and play - play with humans and play with her dog friends! We are one of her happy places!
This is WHY we do what we do!

Trainer Tip Tuesday: Non-Reactivity - Practice Makes Perfect!
from Noble Beast Trainer - Pam DeSantis
Let's talk about a common misconception in dealing with reactive dogs. Many think exposing their pup to triggers will help them "get used to it," but that's not the way to go!
Here's the scoop:
Avoid triggers strategically: This isn't about hiding forever, but about creating a safe space for learning.
Practice the RIGHT behavior: When your dog is calm and below threshold, that's your golden opportunity to reinforce positive responses.
Build that "behavior bank": Start in low-distraction environments and gradually work your way up.
Understand the why: Reactivity often stems from fear or anxiety. Address the root cause, not just the symptoms.
Clear communication is key: Use consistent cues and rewards to help your dog understand what you want.
Remember, behavior change takes time. Be patient, stay consistent, and celebrate those small victories!
