HORSE OWNERS!! There are currently several diagnosed cases of EHV1 in Ohio + PA. While a state of panic is not needed, DILIGENCE is required. Unfortunately a lot of people think there horse is "covered" by whatever "4 way, 5 way, 6 way" vaccine they pick up. There is no vaccine that protects from the neurological form which is what is circulating at this time. Please, if you vaccinate your own horses KNOW what your vaccine is.. I hear 4 way, 5 way... but, 4 way or 5 way what? There are many different combinations of vaccines. A good go to is first and formost your veterinary team, but, if you insist on vaccinating on your own please at least familiarize yourself with the Core vaccines on the website American Association for Equine Practitioners. I understand some of you may perceive this post as harsh, however, a lot of horsemen are not taking this seriously. We see a lot of horse posts, sale, training advice, etc. posted but few take the time to post on topics this serious. TAKEN FROM AAEP SITE: "While there are several vaccines available for protection against both respiratory disease and abortion as a result of EHV-1 infection, at this time there is no equine licensed vaccine that has a label claim for protection against neurologic disease (EHM). Consult with your veterinarian for further guidance if you are considering the use of EHV-1 vaccines."

Diligence is required right now! There is no vaccine for this extremely contagious virus with a high mortality rate.

Diligence is required right now! There is no vaccine for this extremely contagious virus with a high mortality rate.

If you haven't heard, EHV-neurologic is making it's rounds this spring, and it seems a little closer to home than I remember in previous years. I've gone to all remote lessons in Ohio (and have been for almost a month now), and with the first case in PA (Armstrong County) reported by the EDCC, plus the report of horses euthanized in Astabula and Mahoning this morning, I have also implemented more biosecurity measures for myself to the places I'm still traveling to, and I'm continuing to make some others remote. We've delayed show season by over a month, as the map from the EDCC just keeps gaining more dark color in our area and those states surrounding it. Stay safe out there, everyone, and hug your horses tight every day 💗

Today’s hot topic on what we offer at RVC..alternative therapies for pain control

1. Therapeutic Laser
Our laser is used to increase blood flow to areas of inflammation to decrease pain

Routine uses include:

Has also been used for ear infections, a**l gland impactions, hot spots

Todays topic…

Surgeries…..

We offer routine surgeries such as spays, neuters, dentals, and lump removals as well as emergencies such as foreign bodies, bladder stones, c sections, and fracture repairs

Before surgery, your pet is given a full exam to identify any other potential problems, blood work is performed as well as an ekg to insure the safest anesthesia protocols are utilized

We have multiple anesthestic drugs/protocols available depending on your pet’s individual needs

An iv catheter is placed to allow venous access in case any unexpected complications arise during surgery

Your pet is then closely monitored throughout the procedure- blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, respiration rate and EKG

They are monitored throughout recovery

This is the first post in a series highlighting the advantages of using a privately owned, relatively full service veterinary practice that is committed to your pets’ well being and health

Today’s topic: Wellness and what it means….

Wellness exams should be done at least once a year- this is an opportunity for your pet to be examined- any changes in weight or attitude noted, any new lumps checked or existing lumps rechecked. Hearts are listened to for early signs of problems. Ears, teeth and eyes checked. Lymph nodes and bellies palpated (felt) for any changes/lumps

Vaccines are discussed and APPROPRIATELY administered. Depending on your pets’ lifestyle some vaccines may or may not be recommended

Bloodwork to screen for tick diseases in dogs is recommended yearly

Baseline bloodwork may be recommended based on your pet’s age, breed, physical exam findings

Behavioral issues can be addressed

These routine visits allow you to discuss any concerns you may have regarding your pets

Add to this list: dogs, cats, children….
