We want every pet in our shelter to find a home, but some cases are more urgent than others—like 2-year-old Juliet.
Juliet has been in the shelter for nearly seven months, and the environment is taking a toll on her. Juliette refuses to return to her kennel, and it's getting worse with every passing day- she'll refuse to go down the hallway if she thinks you're heading to the kennel. We have coaxed, bribed, pushed, pulled, and ultimately carried her back to the kennel where it is a struggle to close the door without her escaping. Everyone dreads taking Juliet out because it is miserable putting her back. On top of that, Juliet cut her leg on the kennel about a week ago and it has been a struggle getting it to heal in this environment.
Now, let’s talk about the Juliet we all adore.
Juliet is a playful, goofy girl with endless energy. She lives for fetch, enjoys tug of war, and loves tearing apart squeaky toys. In a short-term foster, she was reported to be house-trained and knows commands like sit, paw, and down. Juliet adores people, giving kisses, and resting her head on your shoulder. She’s fun-loving, quirky, and will even join you in the shower if you’re not careful—she’s a fan of running water!
Juliet enjoys playing with other dogs, though her physical play style isn’t for everyone. She’s got a lot of energy, and she’ll keep you on your toes, but she’s worth it.
Juliet urgently needs a home to thrive. If you can adopt or foster Juliet, email [email protected] to get started immediately.
Can’t adopt or foster? Share Juliet’s story to help her find the hero she deserves. Let’s make sure she never has to return to the kennel again.
Shelter Animals Get Christmas Presents
Thanks to your generosity, our shelter animals were able to have a happy and bright holiday season. Our volunteers and staff got together and gifted toys, treats, bedding and more to ALL of our shelter animals who remained in our care during Christmas. 🎄⭐
Your donations and care make a world of difference to the homeless and neglected animals in your community. THANK YOU from the bottom of our heart.
Happy Holidays, from your friends at MCASAC!
This week, our Animal Services Officers faced an unexpected and heart-stopping challenge: rescuing a tiny kitten trapped headfirst in a narrow pipe, deep inside a window well under a deck. The situation was dire, but ASO Ogrin, with help from the amazing team at Montgomery County Maryland – Fire & Rescue Service managed to free the fragile, tiny kitten.
With the weather being so frigid, the kitten was cold, dehydrated, and in need of urgent care. Thankfully, our dedicated team transported him to MCASAC, where our phenonimal vet team jumped into action and gave the kitten, now named Vale, immediate medical attention.
Today, Vale is being cared for at the shelter, wrapped in warmth and care from our vet staff. It’s moments like these that remind us why we do what we do — and we couldn’t be more thankful for the teamwork and quick action that saved this kitten's life. 🐱💙
Ginger's Happy Tails Update!
✨ Happy Tails Update! ✨
"Ginger is doing very well, and we decided to keep his name. He was very shy at first, but after a while, he showed his bossy side. He loves pellets, and every time I fill their pellet dish, he grabs it, dumps all the pellets out, and sits next to them until they’re gone[...]
"He gets along wonderfully with his cage mates, and our four guinea pigs live happily together. We are so grateful for Ginger and his adorable personality."
🦆 Today, we want to take a moment to shine a spotlight on our incredible Animal Services Officers, Flores-Lopez and Snyder, who went above and beyond to rescue an animal in distress. When a call came in this morning about a goose stuck in a drain, our dedicated officers jumped into action. Together they used their expertise, patience, and care to safely rescue the goose and return it to its natural habitat completely unharmed.
This is just one example of the many ways our ASOs are here to help the animals in our community every day. They are the front line of support for animals and people alike. From rescuing wildlife to reuniting families with lost pets, they are trained to handle a wide range of situations with professionalism and compassion.
If you ever encounter an animal in distress, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Our team is here to help!
Oh, Missy! What a funny, silly dog you are!
This charming girl has a way of making everyone around her smile. With her love for food (if you can't tell), you can easily win Missy over with a tasty treat or two—she’s always ready to make a new friend if snacks are involved!
Missy gets along wonderfully with other dogs and has a friendly, social nature. Once she knows you, she’s ready to be like two peas in a pod, sticking by your side and sharing in all the fun.
One of her favorite things to do is leap right into your lap for some pets and cuddles—she just can’t get enough of that loving connection.
We adore Missy and know you will too. If you’re looking for a loyal companion with a playful, loving spirit, Missy is the perfect pup to join your family.
Now through October 31, ALL of our dogs have 100% waived adoption fees, including Missy! So don't hesitate to visit our Adoption Center and meet this sweet lady for yourself! To learn more, please visit https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/animalservices/adoption/howtoadopt.html
Family Saves Shelter Dog, and He Saves Them Back
At MCASAC, we often witness firsthand the power animals have to heal the humans who come into their lives. Rusty and his new family’s story is a one such example of how adopting a pet can transform the lives of the humans who adopt them just as much as the animals being adopted.
When one family came to Clear the Shelters, their mission was much more than finding a dog. They were seeking companionship for a father recently diagnosed with an aggressive stage of cancer. They hoped that having a dog to care for would give him something to live for, help him stay active, and lift his spirits... And that’s exactly what Rusty did. The moment they met, Rusty (formerly “Brit”) ran straight to the father, and the connection was immediate. His energy shifted, and you could see how Rusty brought him comfort, light, and joy in a time of uncertainty.
Our Clear the Shelters event offered free adoptions and pet supplies, but beyond the tangible items, Rusty offered something far more valuable that money can never buy: love, companionship, and a reason to keep going.
The rest is history. Rusty is now a beloved member of the family—helping heal hearts and bringing happiness in a time when it was most needed.
Rescue animals have a unique way of touching our souls, and here at MCASAC, we are honored to be part of these life-changing stories. If you’ve been saved by an adopted pet, please share your story with us in the comments.

Ice'Ah's Lucky Break!
Ice'Ah is one lucky dog! 🍀 That's because she's always getting the chance to go on Lucky Break outings with her favorite volunteers!
Ice'Ah is especially grateful for her Lucky Breaks, because she really, REALLY hates being at the shelter :(. Ice'Ah has been waiting for a home since March, and unforunately it's really starting to get her down. She has so much love to give to a family, and we just know that her people are out there!
Outside of the shelter, Ice'Ah is a whole new dog! She LOVES her outings with her volunteer friends, and always has a blast going on walks, exploring new places, and snuggling up with her Lucky Breakers after she gets all her sillies out. She is a very loyal and loving dog. Any initial hesitancy that she has falls away after she knows that you're her friend.
Not ready to adopt yet? Consider fostering Ice'Ah!! Even just a few nights out of the shelter would make this sweet girl's whole week 💗

UPDATE: Thanks to combined efforts from multiple departments, the coyote has been located and police were able to neutralize the animal. The coyote will be submitted for rabies testing.
At 9:45am on March 28, 2024, Animal Services Officers were dispatched on a vicious animal attack. A woman walking a dog along the power line easement near Patuxent Drive and Lost Creek Drive in Ashton, MD was attacked by an animal suspected to be a coyote. Officers thoroughly searched the wooded area and were unable to locate the coyote but found fragments of wildlife bones along the creek. Officers have continued patrolling throughout the day.
A second woman walking a dog was attacked near Bell Rd in the afternoon.
A resident captured drone footage of a coyote in the area.
The Office of Animal Services is working alongside the Department of Natural Resources, Maryland National Capital Park Police, Montgomery Parks, Montgomery County Police Department, and others to mitigate the danger posed by this animal.
Residents should avoid the area along the Patuxent River Watershed Conservation Park. If you are in the area and see the coyote, do not approach. Call 301-279-8000.
Coyote attacks involving people are rare and can generally be attributed to animal habituation to humans or a diseased individual.
Coyotes are reclusive animals and generally avoid human contact. If you start encountering coyotes in your neighborhood, implement hazing techniques to deter them from feeling comfortable around people.https://www.humanesociety.org/sites/default/files/docs/HSUS%20Coyote%20Hazing%20Guidelines.pdf
Simple things you can do to keep your pets safe:
Make sure your pets' rabies vaccines are up to date (we have free clinics on Wednesdays!)
Always keep your dog on a leash when outside.
Keep your cat inside!
Shelter Dog Desperate for Home After Over a Year in the Shelter.
We have a heartfelt plea. One of our animals needs your help more than ever.
Rihanna has been in the shelter for 407 days.
She is a loving, sweet, loyal, affectionate dog whose spirit is getting dimmer and dimmer every day that she is at our Adoption Center. She is visibly unhappy in her kennel, desperately looks out the window hoping to make a friend, and wants nothing more than a loving home to call her own.
We threw Rihanna a party on the one-year anniversary of her arrival at MCASAC, with the goal of lifting her spirits, and getting the attention of an adopter.
Rihanna was briefly adopted, but it was not a good match and she was returned (we do NOT blame the adopter for this at all). Upon her return, staff members report that Rihanna resisted returning to her kennel, urinated on herself, and had a visibly broken heart.
This is us speaking with full transparency: We don't know what else we can do, but we know that Rihanna needs a successful adoption ASAP. She is a good dog. There is absolutely no reason that a dog like her should be waiting over a year to be adopted. She cannot wait any longer.
Please, please consider adopting Rihanna. Share her on your social media. Ask your friends and family if they are interested in this wonderful dog. Put flyers in your neighborhood bulletins.
WE WELCOME WALK-INS, so PLEASE come and visit us. We are located at 7315 Muncaster Mill Rd, Derwood MD. We are open M, T, TH ,F from 12-7 and W, S ,Su 12-5.
Rihanna's adoption fee is waived. To learn more about how to adopt with us, please visit https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/animalservices/adoption/howtoadopt.html
