UPDATE: Thanks to combined efforts from multiple departments, the coyote has been located and police were able to neutralize the animal. The coyote will be submitted for rabies testing.
At 9:45am on March 28, 2024, Animal Services Officers were dispatched on a vicious animal attack. A woman walking a dog along the power line easement near Patuxent Drive and Lost Creek Drive in Ashton, MD was attacked by an animal suspected to be a coyote. Officers thoroughly searched the wooded area and were unable to locate the coyote but found fragments of wildlife bones along the creek. Officers have continued patrolling throughout the day.
A second woman walking a dog was attacked near Bell Rd in the afternoon.
A resident captured drone footage of a coyote in the area.
The Office of Animal Services is working alongside the Department of Natural Resources, Maryland National Capital Park Police, Montgomery Parks, Montgomery County Police Department, and others to mitigate the danger posed by this animal.
Residents should avoid the area along the Patuxent River Watershed Conservation Park. If you are in the area and see the coyote, do not approach. Call 301-279-8000.
Coyote attacks involving people are rare and can generally be attributed to animal habituation to humans or a diseased individual.
Coyotes are reclusive animals and generally avoid human contact. If you start encountering coyotes in your neighborhood, implement hazing techniques to deter them from feeling comfortable around people.https://www.humanesociety.org/sites/default/files/docs/HSUS%20Coyote%20Hazing%20Guidelines.pdf
Simple things you can do to keep your pets safe:
Make sure your pets' rabies vaccines are up to date (we have free clinics on Wednesdays!)
Always keep your dog on a leash when outside.
Keep your cat inside!
Shelter Dog Desperate for Home After Over a Year in the Shelter.
We have a heartfelt plea. One of our animals needs your help more than ever.
Rihanna has been in the shelter for 407 days.
She is a loving, sweet, loyal, affectionate dog whose spirit is getting dimmer and dimmer every day that she is at our Adoption Center. She is visibly unhappy in her kennel, desperately looks out the window hoping to make a friend, and wants nothing more than a loving home to call her own.
We threw Rihanna a party on the one-year anniversary of her arrival at MCASAC, with the goal of lifting her spirits, and getting the attention of an adopter.
Rihanna was briefly adopted, but it was not a good match and she was returned (we do NOT blame the adopter for this at all). Upon her return, staff members report that Rihanna resisted returning to her kennel, urinated on herself, and had a visibly broken heart.
This is us speaking with full transparency: We don't know what else we can do, but we know that Rihanna needs a successful adoption ASAP. She is a good dog. There is absolutely no reason that a dog like her should be waiting over a year to be adopted. She cannot wait any longer.
Please, please consider adopting Rihanna. Share her on your social media. Ask your friends and family if they are interested in this wonderful dog. Put flyers in your neighborhood bulletins.
WE WELCOME WALK-INS, so PLEASE come and visit us. We are located at 7315 Muncaster Mill Rd, Derwood MD. We are open M, T, TH ,F from 12-7 and W, S ,Su 12-5.
Rihanna's adoption fee is waived. To learn more about how to adopt with us, please visit https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/animalservices/adoption/howtoadopt.html

Every Animal at Shelters Gets Holiday Gift!
When many of us think of the holidays, a few things come to mind. Warm embraces, time spent with loved ones, going home, and belonging somewhere.🎄🎁💖
For homeless animals, the holiday season looks a lot different. They find themselves still longing for a family to call their own and a warm home to curl up in. The holidays can be tough on shelter pets as they continue to wait for the day they are adopted into a loving family.
But our awesome volunteers and staff knew that we had to do something to make the holidays extra special. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our volunteers and donors, we were able to create holiday MAGIC for the homeless animals at MCASAC.
First, we created goody boxes and filled them to the brim with delicious treats, new toys, and warm, cozy items for them to find comfort in.
Then, our volunteers and staff walked the halls and gave EVERY SINGLE ANIMAL a holiday gift box of their very own. All the good boys and girls, big and small, our "santas" visited them all!
We had a blast giving extra love and attention to our adorable adoptable animals, and they were so excited to be participating in the festive fun... but more than anything, our animals still want a home for the holidays.
If you can open your heart or home to a shelter pet this holiday season, please consider doing so. You can learn more about MCASAC by visiting us online at https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/animalservices/

Animal Services Officers Rescue Deer from Fall Down 15-Foot-Deep Window Well
On the morning of October 22, Montgomery County residents were greeted with an unusual scene – a deer had fallen into the window well of their Potomac home. The young buck, though unscathed from the fall, was unfortunately trapped in the 15-foot deep well.
Thankfully, the homeowners knew who to call! Animal Service Officers Flores-Lopez and Jesien responded to the scene, wasting no time in mobilizing support for the challenging rescue operation.
Officer Ingle, assisted by staff veterinarian Dr. Ramirez, humanely sedated the struggling deer via blow dart, a tool recently acquired by MCASAC for difficult rescues such as this one. Within moments, the effects of the sedative took hold, allowing the team to climb safely into the well and approach the trapped deer.
Montgomery County Maryland – Fire & Rescue Service arrived on scene and assisted our officers in loading the deer onto a basket stretcher, which was connected to the crane system on the top of the fire truck. Finally, the deer was safely lifted out of the window well.
With the rescue mission accomplished, officers Flores-Lopez and Jesien took charge of transporting the deer to a nearby park. There, Dr. Ramirez administered a reversal agent to gently revive the deer from its sedated state.
After approximately 30 minutes of careful monitoring, the deer, though wobbly from the sedation, was up and recuperating from his big adventure. Dr. Ramirez determined the deer was unharmed and would walk away from the ordeal with nothing but a story to go back and tell his deer friends!
This remarkable rescue operation serves as a testament to the incredible dedication that MCASAC officers and staff have to caring for the safety and wellbeing of animals in Montgomery County. Yesterday evening (March 20, 2023), a senior terrier was brought to our Animal Services Center by a good samaritan who found her as a stray earlier this month in Burtonsville. The dog was terrified and in rough condition-- her once-silky coat had become matted and dirty from her time outside and lost. We immediately knew this dog needed our help getting back to her loving family who she had clearly been missing.
During the intake process, one of the first things our staff will do is scan for a microchip. That’s exactly what staff member Kathy Parker did as soon as the stray dog was passed over to her by the finder, and what she found was nothing short of incredible.
Not only did the stray dog have an up-to-date microchip, but she also had an unbelievable story. The pup turned out to be an 11-year-old Yorkie who had gone missing in Washington DC… in 2013!
We contacted the owners and informed them that their dog, Dior, who had been missing for TEN YEARS was finally found and safe! Of course, they were overjoyed and quickly made arrangements to bring Dior back home after a decade. The reunion was a tear-jerker for everybody involved. The once shy and nervous Dior exploded into tail wags and wiggles as soon as she laid eyes on her long-lost family whom she had never forgotten.
We got to witness their joyful reunion and had permission to share it with you all.
As a reminder, this reunion would not have been possible without an updated microchip. If your pet is not already microchipped (if you adopted from MCASAC, your pet is chipped), please take a few minutes to make an appointment to do so now.
On Wednesday morning, Animal Services Officer Sarah Ogrin assisted Montgomery County Maryland – Fire & Rescue Service Station 33 in helping this little friend who was in a bit of a pickle!
The owner of this Montgomery County home noticed a deer was trapped between two fences and was very much unable to free herself. Luckily, this deer was about to be in very good hands.
The deer was freed from the fence and was thankfully not injured during the incident. She had a successful return to the wild and can go tell all her friends about her crazy morning!
Huge round of applause to Officer Ogrin and MCFRS station 33 for yet another incredible day on the job.
On Thursday, Oct. 6, The Office of Animal Services’ Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) welcomed cats and dogs from Florida shelters to provide relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian.
As a Best Friends Network Partner, the Office of Animal Services (OAS) received a request for aid. Working together with the Best Friends Emergency Response team, OAS was able to accept 10 cats and three dogs from the Humane Society of Pinellas, which acted as a transport hub for dogs and cats to move out of Florida in the wake of the hurricane to create more room in local shelters for displaced pets. Animals from the transport originally came from multiple Florida shelters, but primarily from Manatee County Animal Services.
The cats and dogs were given several days to relax and recover from their long road trip. They were then evaluated medically and behaviorally in preparation for eventual adoption at MCASAC.

Meet Vaquita, who always knows how to bring the party full-force! Her favorite staff member always cherishes their time together and would love to see Vaquita find her forever home. She writes:
“I love her. She was nervous when she came in, it took her a few months to understand [that people are] not so bad. She is available for adoption, and I think whoever gets her hits the jackpot! […] She is the perfect companion.”
To adopt Vaquita for yourself, please visit the How to Adopt link below and get started on the application process!

Paddy the Cat Reunited with Owner After 2 Years!
Today, we got to partake in a reunion two years in the making!
A small gray cat was brought to MCASAC by a good samaritan who found him as a stray. During the intake process, one of the first things our staff will do is scan for a microchip. Thankfully, this cat was not only chipped, but the chip had updated contact information!!
We contacted the owner who informed us that their kitty, who we learned was named Paddy, had been missing for TWO YEARS! We got to witness their joyful reunion and had permission to share it with you all.
As a reminder, this reunion would not have been possible without an updated microchip. If your pet is not already microchipped (if you adopted from MCASAC, your pet is chipped), please take a few minutes to make an appointment to do so now.
