We started this farm to help fill a gap. To get more fresh food to our community. We’re still doing that ! (don’t forget to sign up for community harvest days this summer!)

Amid losing land - urban prices and zoning/municipal headaches - we are trying something new this year.

We’re making compost. And offering a new service to fill the gap in Des Moines. There currently is not comprehensive or existing infrastructure in our city for food waste/kitchen scrap collection for compost. What is made available for residents is made from yard waste. We wanted another choice. So we’re building it.

Sign up to compost with us! Pick the price and frequency that works for you. We provide the bin, and we pull up to get your scraps! Get first access to the compost we produce as a subscriber.

And! If you sign up to any tier before Earth Day Jamie at .dsm will give you 10% off your purchase when you show her your receipt during Earth Week!

Are you a restaurant/food service provider ?? Hit me up let’s chat!

Let’s make some treasure out of your trash. Sign up at sweettoothfarm.net

🚨 call to action 🚨

My kids started school in 2020, the same year that started the community school coordinator program. So I don’t know DMPS without them.

I am furious that and have financially mismanaged this program so badly. The community school coordinators are doing the most important work outside of academics at DMPS. The numbers don’t lie!

I have seen CSCs be the reason a child has clean clothes, be the reason they have access to food at home, have opportunities to attend extracurriculars and community programs - they have breathed life into our schools.

Moulton has the highest participation of extracurriculars in the entire district, and that achievement sits solely on the shoulders of our CSC Leah.

how dare you ask our CSCs to increase their workload, for a $15,000 pay cut. This is shameful. You are directly harming the students and families who need CSCs the most.

🚨We need to flood the inboxes of the DMPS school board, Dr. Ian Roberts, Shelly Bosovich, Jake Troja, and Demarco Lowery. 🚨 All of their contact information is available on the last slide! I know I will be emailing a few times a day starting now!

We can’t let this happen. We won’t let this happen.
Please share with your networks and spread the word!!

It’s my birthday tomorrow! (tell your fav Capricorn you love them!)

And all I want is seeeeeeeds!!

We no longer sell to the public or do a CSA. All the produce we grow goes to our neighbors and to community fridges around the metro. That means that all our costs in the spring add up. We do not have any funding or grants. And believe it or not the spring will be here before you know it.

It would mean so much to get some support to start up the farm this year! If you can help us Venmo a few bucks 🫶🏼

finally getting the tunnel winterized

really have had no motivation as we aren’t selling this fall — and things have just been hard lately

really happy to have found a LFPA distributor and we are all good to grow for hungry folks 2024

we are hopeful that the program will be renewed - but who knows

very grateful for this small window that we can grow food for hungry folks and not only those lovely people who can afford it

the cold keeps coming

it always does

I keep trying to remember the hot sun on my skin, the laughter of my children;

for me it will come again

I’m consumed with thoughts about those who will never again feel it on this earth

the mothers who only have their children’s blood and screams of agony to remember

looking at seed catalogs, thinking of spring - thinking of warm sun - of olive trees and laughter in Palestine. I believe in that future.

Our Story

We moved into Riverbend, a community just north of downtown Des Moines and knew it was going to be our home. Right next door at the time was a small pocket park. Slowly over a few years, the Parks Department removed all of the equipment and infrastructure at the park. At the end it was a vacant lot with a large sand pit. My husband and I spent about 3 years working with the City trying to get anything to happen with the lot. We finally made it in front of the Parks and Rec BOD and then the City Council. We brought them 6 options that we had worked out with the neighbors bordering the space, and the city voted to let an adjacent property owner lease the space. We signed a lease with the Parks Department in 2016 and we were off. We worked with the legal department to adjust our side yard lease to be able to grow food and sell that to the community.

Since then we have been hitting the ground running, we went from growing on 5000 sqft in the urban core of Des Moines, to over an acre and still expanding. We are passionate about providing the highest quality chemical free produce that isn’t priced at a luxury item. We offer innovative supply structures to stay economically sustainable as we strive to be environmentally sustainable. We deeply care about the folks who live around our growing spaces. We believe that they should have the first opportunity to access the food that we are growing. We are intentional about selling our produce in the neighborhoods that we are growing in and not taking it out of the community. We accept EBT, DUFB, and sell on a sliding scale. We hope to continue to grow our efforts to provide healthy affordable options to folks living in the city of Des Moines.
