We got a puppy!

Say hello to the newest member of our family, Dolly.

For years, I have wanted a “scruffy mutt” and we found her! She was a stray in Oklahoma and brought her back to Iowa. Our family met her and knew she was the one!

Her and June are instant buddies and she is such a sweetheart.

She’s the perfect mutt, BUT what guesses do you have on her breed(s)?

Here is a tutorial on how to make and bottle herb salts. These are great gifts, and the salt helps preserve the herbs so they last a long time!

Today was a perfect day for manual labor in my home garden plot. I’ve been pretty limited in my ability to tend to the garden due to my recent knee surgery, but recovery is going well! My work pace was slow but it felt so nice to put some work in! I even had a buddy helping me today (check out photo 2 to see my companion).

It’s not every season that you get to work in the garden this late into the fall so I’m trying to enjoy this weather while I can!

Today is garlic planting day at . The seed was sourced from our friends and the cloves are beautiful. After planting we mulched the bed with beautiful organic straw from .tatecarlson .

If you’re in Central Iowa it’s not too late to plant garlic. It’s a fun crop to grow and relatively low maintenance.

The garden season is coming to an end and we have 1 more bed of carrots to harvest before our home plot is all cleared out.

Lewis and I attempted a harvest today, but the soil is so dry that we decided to pick enough for us to use in the kitchen. We will leave the rest of the bed in the ground and wait for some rain before we harvest again. The rain will help loosen the soil and make it easier to get the pitch fork under the carrots.

Carrots are a great fall/winter crop because they can handle cold weather and even taste sweeter after they are frost kissed! 🥕🥕🥕

Be prepared for the first frost here in Central Iowa!

FIRST FREEZE: The first freeze of the season is looking more likely early next week. Areas of northern Iowa may see freezing temperatures by Tuesday morning, but look to be more area wide by Wednesday morning (pictured below).

When: October 3rd
Time: 4:30-7P

Who's Invited: All my customers and clients!

Plant Giveaway - I have about 50-60 shrubs we no longer wish to sell. Come tour the home and take home a shrub so we can save them all!

Why the heck are we selling?

Many of you know by now that my wife (Jenny) and I have dreamt up and operated Dogpatch Urban Gardens for almost a decade now. I still recall Jenny being pregnant with our youngest son Lewis, aka Lewboo (now 9) when we closed on this original property. Jenny had excitement and plans (that kept us quite busy for years :). We improved the look of three city blocks in our neighborhood. We met thousands of new community members through our storefront, our Air BNB, farmers markets, and more. It was all so much work but equally as gratifying. As our kids are growing, the same passion Jenny had for our business is now getting pulled into another direction. Simply put... Mama wants to be a Mama. This was a very hard decision for us both and not taken lightly. Although this has been our passion project for years now, the business we created to serve our lifestyle started to become counterproductive for Jenny's lifestyle. In addition to the immense amount of time this consumed in her life, her knees had been failing and it was too much to endure. Jenny has the wisdom to listen to her body and mind. This decision is her pivot. I am very impressed with her ability to make this decision even though it was a hard one.

At our last event, some asked "What's next for the Quiners?"...
My response..."We are just getting started"...

Looking back -

5085 Meredith Dr. was built in 1925 by the Meredith family for its farmhands at the time. It is what I would call an Arts and Crafts, 1.5-sty home. I love this vintage style of home and working on it has been a thrill. In the time that we owned it, I was always tinkering around with it. I often would joke with Jenny that while she was in the urban farming business I was always in the Real Estate business.

Over the years... we added a bathroom and a walk-in to make a killer primary on the second floor, updated all of the home's mechanicals, did a full makeover on its exterior, and more...That said, until we decided we were going to sell this, I had never remodeled the kitchen/main floor until the last month. We now kicked that can over the curb and this home is looking just like I always wanted.

This urban farming process taught your Realtor a ton along the way.
What did I learn about Real Estate with DUG?

1. Joining two parcels of land together is called a plat of survey - I went through this process to join the backyard of a home with the first property we bought. This understanding has come into play several times with my customers.

2. Commercial Development 101 - Going through this process required learning how to navigate the county board of adjustments, interpret zoning ordinances, engaging engineers and architects. Trial by fire will teach you way more than a degree in the subject could. This more global perspective is crucial in many real estate situations, even with homeowners.

3. A conditional use permit - This is what the county granted us to allow for commercial permissions on a residential property.

4. Variances for days - There is always a way to get permissions not normally granted within reason. We received many variances for the farm as we pushed the boundaries with the county on how to allow for and be open to Urban Farming.

5. Our actions affected change for others - The city of Des Moines is currently in the process of adding changes in it's zoning ordinances to allow for operations like ours to start up with less impediment. Many of you may remember the challenges we faced to get off the ground. Our experience helped create a precedent for the city to learn from and that is also something I am proud of.

On October 15th we close on this property but before I sell it I wanted to have one last hurrah. Come down, say hello, take a plant :)

Lewis is pretty proud of yesterday’s harvest. We’re working hard to finish up all things in the garden this season and he’s always a huge help! It’s so great to see kids get excited about being outside and growing food.

Cultivating Community through urban farming

Dogpatch Urban Gardens (D.U.G.) is a small-scale market garden growing produce naturally with organic principles, and sustainable methods, on ¼ an acre of land. We never use any form of synthetic chemicals on the plot including artificial pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. WHO WE ARE – A family run farm passionate about health, community, education, and the environment. WHAT WE DO – Cultivate fresh, nutritious, and flavorful produce in the Northern Beaverdale area. HOW WE DO IT – Use sustainable, organic, and biointensive farm methods to produce high yields on a minimal amount of land while maintaining the integrity of the environment. WHAT WE VALUE · Health/Nutrition · Building community · Environmental Conservation · Education · Family Values – hard work, resilience, commitment, dependability · Organic principles (No use of synthetic chemicals) · Enhancing soil quality · Professionalism The farm is built on a foundation which the successful market gardener, Jean Martin Fortier states the best, “Grow better, not bigger.” Small-scale farming has its advantages because it allows for me to “know my crops.” Since the land is small I am constantly interacting with every square foot of the crops and I can recognize any potential issues involving the soil, pests, weeds, etc. Growing on a smaller scale also allows me to focus on creating high quality and fresh produce. I am able to harvest within just days of distribution! Imagine a farm that not only provides you and your family with healthy, delicious, and local food but a farm that does all this while positively interacting with the environment. Hopefully the visual you created in your mind is that of Dogpatch Urban Gardens. I can’t wait to grow for you and with you!
