RESCUED! Nine ducklings are back with their mama after falling into a storm sewer on Des Moines’ east side! An ARL Animal Services officer arrived to find the mother duck frantically flying overhead and calling for her babies. Thanks to a city crew who came out on overtime to help and DMPD Officer Warren, who climbed into the sewer to retrieve the ducklings, we were able to reunite the babies safely with their parents. Check out the video of mom and babies coming together again!
Cat rescued from under slabs of concrete!
RESCUED! Brandy’s cat Baby had been missing for 3 days when she finally found her meowing and trapped in a hole under slabs of broken concrete this week! When ARL Animal Services officers arrived, they were able to reach in to Baby through the opening. She purred at them, but she was wedged in such a way that she couldn’t get out or even turn herself around. In order to rescue her, some large pieces of concrete would have to be shifted. We began working to get her out, but we needed more help, so we called the Des Moines Fire Department. Firefighters arrived to assist, and after a bit of work, they were finally able to get Baby free! Thankfully Baby was uninjured and she is now back safe with her family.
Huge thanks to Des Moines firefighters Bryant Egenbreger, Mark Leonard, and Bill Giusto for their great work in helping rescue Baby from a dangerous situation!
IMPORTANT: An ARL Animal Services officer arrived at a middle school this morning to help a young doe who was completely entangled in a soccer net. Our ACO arrived to find the terrified deer thrashing around trying to free herself but only succeeding in getting herself more tangled. Thankfully, our ACO was able to free the exhausted doe within a couple of minutes, and she ran off to safety.
Unfortunately, what happened to this poor deer is a relatively common occurrence for wildlife in places where there are soccer nets and volleyball nets. This is the second time in a matter of days that our ACOs have helped a deer in this situation. Entanglement can result in life-threatening injuries to the wildlife involved and significant damage to the nets, so we HIGHLY recommend that nets be removed or rolled up for storage any time they’re not in use. The young doe today was lucky she was discovered when she was. It could have turned out much worse for her. Taking that extra time after games and practices may just save a life (and your net).
