Today Dr. Draca spent a small amount of her free time examining a few cats at Heartland Animal Shelter to get them ready for their next chapter in life: finding a home! If you, a friend or anyone in your family are looking to add a new furry family member to your home, Heartland and many other rescue organizations in the Chicagoland area have many deserving loving pets waiting for their special someone. We also partnered with the shelter so any pet adopted from Heartland gets their first exam at our hospital for free. 🐱🐶🩷

Today Ricky came in to see Dr. Draca for his first acupuncture treatment. ❤️

Last week, Ricky received a ketamine injection as part of his pain-management plan. Ricky is normally very anxious and sensitive to being touched, but today we noticed a BIG difference — he was relaxed enough to receive his first acupuncture treatment and didn’t even flinch as his needles were placed!

His first session focused on acupuncture points for his hips and lower back, areas where he experiences significant discomfort.

But our favorite part of today’s visit, Ricky was carried INTO the hospital… and WALKED OUT on his own! 🐾❤️

While one visit doesn’t tell us what his long-term response will be, we were so excited to see him feeling comfortable enough to walk out of the clinic today!

Ricky will be back next week for acupuncture treatment #2. We look forward to hopefully seeing him become stronger with every treatment.

Meet Spike, an 8-year-old Pit Bull who recently came to us after ultrasound imaging raised concern for a mass near his stomach/pyloric region and thickening of the stomach wall. While cancer is a major concern, we want to emphasize that we are still awaiting biopsy and a definitive diagnosis.

Spike is scheduled for an endoscopy with biopsies, which will help determine exactly what we are dealing with and guide his next steps. Oncology consultation and additional staging have also been discussed.

In the meantime, our goal is to support Spike’s body and quality of life while his diagnostic workup continues. His integrative care plan includes:

✨ O3UV therapy
✨ Re**al ozone therapy
🥩 Nutritional adjustments and gut support
🍄 Turkey tail mushroom supplementation for immune support
🐟 Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA)
🌿 Liver support, including milk thistle
💊 Conventional medications to help control nausea, inflammation and discomfort

🐾 Wrigley is aging backwards! 🐾

We loved seeing handsome Wrigley today for his annual exam! ❤️

Wrigley saw Dr. Draca last year, and during that visit they discussed some changes to his diet, including incorporating more fresh, less processed foods. His owner shared with Dr. Draca today that since making those changes, Wrigley’s itching has improved tremendously, and she no longer feels he needs his allergy medication nearly as often! Also the movoflex seems to really be helping his mobility too!

It’s always exciting to hear when changes we discussed at a previous visit are making a noticeable difference in a pet’s quality of life.

At 12 and 1/2 years young, we joked that Wrigley seems to be aging backwards! 🐶 He looked fantastic today, and we couldn’t be happier with how well he’s doing.

Here’s to keeping all pets like Wrigley happy, healthy, and thriving — we can’t wait to see him looking just as amazing next year! ❤️🐾

NEW AT NORTHWEST ANIMAL HOSPITAL: RED LIGHT THERAPY! 🐾

Dr. Draca has been researching red light therapy (photobiomodulation) and its potential benefits for our veterinary patients—and we’re excited to begin incorporating it into select treatments at our hospital!

Red and near-infrared light therapy is a non-invasive treatment that may help support:

✨ Reduced inflammation & discomfort
✨ Pain relief
✨ Improved circulation
✨ Wound & tissue healing
✨ Muscle recovery
✨ Joint mobility & stiffness
✨ Recovery after certain procedures

This therapy doesn’t have to stop at the hospital! Pet owners can also purchase red light therapy units for at-home use, allowing appropriate pets to receive regular treatments from the comfort of home. We recommend discussing the device, wavelength, dosing, and treatment area with your veterinarian before starting a home protocol.

We wanted to share a special update about one of our patients, Lana, who has been receiving Ozone treatment with Dr. Draca.

Lana was diagnosed with a bladder mass, and during X-rays performed before surgery, an additional suspected mass near her heart was identified. Because of the potential risks, surgery was not recommended at that time.

With the incredible commitment of her owner, Lana began coming to Northwest Animal Hospital weekly for MAHT + O3UV ozone therapy, alongside her conventional medications (NSAIDs) and supportive care (a Chinese herbal supplement for bleeding and re**al ozone suppository therapy) at home.

Today we received some very encouraging news: on Lana’s follow-up X-rays, the previously identified suspected mass near her heart was no longer visible. The images were reviewed by the same radiology company that originally identified the abnormality, and they confirmed it was no longer seen.

We are still monitoring Lana’s bladder mass, and we know her journey is far from over. We also want to be clear that one patient’s outcome does not prove that ozone therapy treats or cures cancer.

But it does give us a reason to keep learning, asking questions, documenting outcomes, and thoughtfully exploring how integrative therapies may complement conventional veterinary medicine.

Most importantly, today we get to celebrate hope for more comfortable days and more precious time for Lana with the family who loves her. 🩷🐾
