Hey everyone, I wanted to share my experience raising meat chickens! It's been a rewarding process, and I've learned a lot. We harvested 45 lbs of chicken in 8 weeks from a dozen chickens.

First, I'm only advocating for some people to start raising their chickens for meat. It's not for everyone, and ethical and environmental considerations must be considered. But for those who are interested, here are some things to keep in mind:

Choose your breed carefully. There are breeds specifically bred for meat production that will grow faster and have more meat on them than others. Could you research and find a breed that fits your needs and values?

Build or buy a coop that is appropriate for your number of birds. Chickens need protection from the elements and predators, so ensure your pen is sturdy and secure.

Feed your birds a balanced diet. You can buy commercial chicken feed, but many supplement it with kitchen scraps and forage.

Could you ensure your birds have access to fresh water at all times? This is crucial for their health and well-being.

Be prepared for processing day. This is when you will humanely kill and process your birds for meat. It's not a fun task but an essential part of the process. Many resources are available online to help you learn how to do this properly.

Again, raising meat chickens is only for some, but for those interested, it can be a rewarding and educational experience. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Spring is here and with that comes lots of babies and new additions to the homestead, with the overwhelming increase of new bunnies, quail, turkeys, and chicks we decided to convert one of our hoop houses to a “nursery” for the babies. Using the project board, I sectioned off the house to give the newly hatched birds an area as well as the juvenile birds. The leftover portions are being saved for nursing rabbits and their kits. This has been a fantastic addition to our homestead as you know birds and rabbits both stink and it's a plus not keeping them in the basement.

Did you know that rabbits need to create a particular nesting area before they give birth to their babies? Rabbits are highly social animals and want a safe and comfortable environment for their young to grow and develop.
During nesting season, typically between February and September, we breed our meat rabbits before the weather gets too hot for the males to reproduce. Female rabbits gather grass, fur, and twigs to build a nest. They'll create a shallow depression in the ground and line it with the collected materials, creating a soft and warm space for their young to be born.
Because of Missouri’s ridiculous weather patterns, I made these nesting boxes to protect the kits during cold snaps and any other unforeseen storms that could put them in danger. This provides enough space for the mothers to deed their babies and still have an area for themselves. This is not their housing; it is precisely for nesting and giving birth. The rabbits stay here briefly until the babies can nest outside hutches without the elements affecting their health and well-being.

Hey everyone!! Today we had the opportunity to candlelight some of our turkey eggs! Candling eggs is a process of shining a bright light through an egg to check its quality, development, and fertility. This technique is commonly used in poultry farming to determine whether an egg is fertilized and developing into a chick or whether it's infertile and can be used for consumption. as you can tell from the picture, we have a few fertile eggs.

A short clip of how your pigs can work for you on your homestead.

Exciting news from the homestead! We're experimenting with moving our pigs around the property to see how they can help improve our soil health, control pests, and reduce waste. We've set up a movable pig pen that we can easily set up and teardown; we're giving the pigs access to different areas of the property to forage and root.

So far, it's been amazing to see how the pigs have transformed some of our overgrown areas into fertile soil for planting. They've also been great at eating up kitchen scraps and other organic matter we used to compost. And the best part? Our pigs seem happier and healthier than ever before!

We look forward to continuing this experiment and seeing how our pigs can help us build a more sustainable and resilient homestead. Stay tuned for updates!"

Hey everyone, Spring is here! I just wanted to share my experience with incubating eggs! I have incubated many quail eggs, and chicken eggs bring their own challenges; It's such a fascinating process to watch and can be an excellent project for kids to learn about the science of life.

16 turkey eggs in the incubator!! They should be hatching around 4/22. Turkeys can be a bit more challenging to hatch than chickens, so it's essential to do your research and be prepared for the specific needs of these birds. I found that keeping a close eye on the temperature and humidity levels are essential for a successful hatch.

Finally starting to get a steady flow of eggs from our turkeys, super excited to hatch out a few batches in the coming weeks. I will be collecting them until I have enough for a small batch, then Stright to the incubator.

it has been a long winter!!! But It's that time of year again, we have been gearing up for and preparing for spring around the homestead. quail are laying and we have already hatched a few batches, and we have added a few additions to the homestead.

Something I have learned recently is DO NOT THROW AWAY NEWSPAPER, it has so many uses around the homestead. Recently I found out you can make seed starters with it. Its not only free, it is upcycling!

The latest experiment on the homestead is homemade mayonnaise. it is actually amazing, it has a lot more flavor than the store bought stuff. I made it on a whim, I forgot to pick up some mayo on my last grocery store trip.

We had a small batch of quail hatch over the last two days. These quail are a lighter batch of Italians, commonly called autumn ambers. hopefully they will be as beautiful as their parents.

During our homestead journey we have tried a number of things to figure out what works for us, ya know the usual stuff i.e. , raising chickens, starting a garden, and breeding quail etc... today we tried making soap. We really enjoyed the process, Its something I think we will continue to do on the homestead.

On our little homestead I use the deep litter method in all of our hoop houses, chicken coops, and brooders. After I clean all of them we take the litter utilizing it for compost. Today I have been separating the litter into more manageable piles, I hope I can beat spring and have everything ready in time.

Empty brooders usually mean two things around here, 1. its time to harvest some quail and fill the freezer or 2. We have a batch going into lockdown any day. Luckily both will be happening this weekend.
