According to David Hawkins' Map of Consciousness, the actions of a dog's wagging tail and a cat's purr are said to calibrate at 500, the level of unconditional love. Hawkins theorized that only approximately 4% of the population reaches this level, while 80% remains in lower states such as guilt, shame, fear, and anger, which calibrate below 200. This is why pets can be so therapeutic, as their pure, unconditional love is thought to help raise the consciousness of those around them. Key aspects of David Hawkins' theory include: The Map of Consciousness, a framework that assigns vibrational levels to emotions and states of being; Calibration at 500, the frequency associated with unconditional love, compassion, and profound inner peace; High percentage of people below 200, with a large portion of humanity existing in negative emotional states; and Healing presence of animals, where animals are seen as powerful healers due to their capacity for unconditional love. Furthermore, animals help raise consciousness through unconditional love, pure connection, and emotional healing, offering love without conditions, expectations, or ego-driven issues, providing a pure connection to the present moment, and bringing about feelings of peace, comfort, and emotional healing.
The Map of Consciousness
The Map of Consciousness is a logarithmic scale from 1 to 1,000 that assigns a numerical value to different levels of human consciousness.
Calibration at 500: Hawkins calibrated unconditional love at 500. The statement that a dog's wagging tail and a cat's purr exist at this high-frequency level of love is consistent with his work.
Levels below 200: The scale shows that levels below 200 represent destructive, negative states of consciousness, which Hawkins called "force". These include states like guilt, shame, depression, fear, anger, and pride.
The 200 level: The number 200 is a critical threshold, representing the level of courage. This is the first level where consciousness transitions from destructive "force" to constructive "power".
Statistics on consciousness levels
Hawkins' research concluded that only about 4% of the human population will ever reach the higher levels of consciousness, such as unconditional love. He found that approximately 80% of the world's population calibrates below the 200 level, living predominantly in the lower, fear-based states of consciousness.
Animals as healers
The belief that animals have a powerful healing presence due to their capacity for unconditional love is also consistent with Hawkins' teachings. Hawkins suggested that because animals are not burdened by the human ego, they exist in the present moment and can act as conduits of pure love and acceptance. Spending time with pets can help raise a person's energy and frequency toward a more positive state.
A note on the cat calibration
While the calibration of a cat's purr at 500 is found in many summaries of Hawkins' work, some readers of his book Transcending the Levels of Consciousness have noted a discrepancy. According to a table in that book, cats calibrate at 240, while "family cats" calibrate at 245. This has prompted discussion among Hawkins' followers, as a calibration below 500 appears contradictory to the healing message.
