The mission of Detroit Animal Care and Control (DACC) is to promote and protect the health, safety and welfare of the residents and visitors of the City of Detroit from animal bites, zoonotic disease, or traffic hazards; to maintain the highest standards of humane animal sheltering; to promote the placement of animals into homes; and to encourage responsible pet ownership through education, enforcement, and community partnership.
Parking is available behind the building in the fenced lot
We can be reached at (313)224-6356. Please note we are not an emergency response service. Please DO NOT message with urgent situations. If you feel unsafe or threatened by an animal, please call 911 or your local precinct.
More than half of the animals entering our facility are strays. Due to our large intake numbers, we cannot provide information regarding lost or found pets over the phone. We recommend you visit the shelter in person every 1-3 days to look for your lost companion. Lost and found pets can be reported here. To increase the chances of finding a lost pet, all owners should have visible identification on their animals as well as a microchip that is registered and kept up to date.

ADOPT:
If you are interested in adopting a pet from DACC, please read the guidelines below. Adoptions must be done in person at the shelter.
Dog adoptions include rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), DHLPP and bordetella vaccination, heartworm testing and prevention, and general deworming.
Cat adoptions include rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), FVRCP vaccination, FELV/FIV testing, and general deworming.
All adopters are required to pay a $150 sterilization deposit at the time of adoption (if the animal is not already spayed/neutered). The sterilization deposit is returned to the adopter after the animal is spayed/neutered by their veterinarian within 30 days of adoption.
Adoptions must be done in person.
Adopters must be 18 years of age and older and must present a valid ID at the time of adoption application.
If you rent, please bring a copy of your lease.
We strongly recommend bringing all human members of your household, but please leave resident pets at home!
The majority of dogs entering our facility come in with unknown backgrounds. If we have prior information on a dog and interactions with other animals, we will include it in the dogs description. Otherwise, we are unable to do cat/dog introductions in the shelter. If you have a pet at home, we recommend slow, supervised introductions.
We are unable to gauge most of the time whether or not an animal is house trained in the shelter. If the animal has been in foster care and we have further information, we will include it in its description. Adopters should expect to spend some time re-acclimating their new pet on house training.
Please keep in mind pets require a lifelong commitment. Be prepared to give your newly adopted pet plenty of love, enrichment, basic care and training, and have a plan for unexpected medical expenses.
All animals are not deemed adopted until all paperwork has been processed, fees paid and the animal is released. We do not hold animals for applicants.

FOSTER:
"Fostering" is providing a temporary home for a homeless pet. You can feel good knowing that you have made a positive difference in an animals life, and each animal fostered in a home opens up a cage or kennel space for us to save another animal! Fosters are the first line of advocating for DACC dogs and help promote them to find their forever homes! Fostering is truly lifesaving.
Fostering can be as short as one night (try our Slumber Party program!), a couple of days or weeks, or longer term for things like heartworm treatment.
Please email [email protected] for more information.
VOLUNTEER:
Although volunteering at a shelter can be challenging emotionally and physically; it is a rewarding experience because you help some of the most vulnerable animals get a second chance at a new life.
There is always something you can do to help our dogs and cats in need. Just sign up here to let us know when you'll be by. Our volunteers help us improve shelter life for animals by providing exercise, enrichment, and TLC; prepare pets for their new homes by providing training and socialization; promote available animals to rescue partners and potential adopters; assist us with daily chores such as laundry, dishes, and kennel cleaning; and go home knowing theyโve made a difference in an animals life!
Please email [email protected] for more information.
DONATE:
In kind donations are accepted at the shelter during hours of operation. We take many items - including new or gently used blankets, towels, and toys, as well as cat and dog food. We can always utilize collars and leashes for animals adopted or returned to their owners. For a larger list of items in need, our Amazon wishlist can be viewed here
