While handing out resources for Detroit dog owners, such as igloo dog houses and tie-out cables; we are hoping that Detroit Animal Care and Control is also enforcing the anti-tether laws in our city in the process and not just facilitating more suffering.
"Education" in the form of handouts without enforcing laws is only going to make the issues in Detroit worse!
Our message to Don Johnson: "Family members" do not live in the yard, please bring your dogs inside!

Let's compare a 4 month period >>
January 2020 - April 2020 ~VS~ January 2021 - April 2021
Intake of dogs to Detroit Animal Control decreased by 12% while bite incidents increased by 17%
How are these 2 changes related?
In order to proclaim a "no kill status" DAC had to show a large number of live release compared to intakes. They euthanize for space so that number wasn't going to be achieved naturally.
Instead, they stopped intaking whenever they could. Leaving dogs on the streets, leaving dogs on vacant priorities and feeding them until room became available, refusing to accept stray dogs from finders (even when the finder didn't feel safe keeping them).
The draw back to doing these things is that public safety is jeopardized by each of these scenarios!
The Director of Animal Control is no stranger to dog bites and putting the public's safety at risk though. Mark Kumpf holds the title for both in his career as an animal control director.
5 mauling deaths > 2 more than any other director in the history of animal control directors.
How long before another child is mauled to death in Detroit?

For those who say that Detroit Animal Control isn't euthanizing adoptable dogs for space... THEY ARE. These pleas go out several times a week from staff and volunteers but at the same time the Live Release Coordinator will refusing to work with qualified rescues because of personal feelings, egos, punishment, and cliques. Power Trip? Seems like it.

Yep... I'm about to "go there"
You ain't gotta lie to kick it Melissa.
No one sent you death threats; We didn't terrorize Harry Ward, YOU were a breath of fresh air, and we're not threatening anyone currently at the shelter either. If there were threats there'd be police involvement in a heartbeat. Let's see some police reports?
This "poor me" attitude is childish >> it's POOR DOGS/CATS. That's it. Simple. We want what's best for the animals and that's not what is currently taking place at the shelter.
Too many cliques, too many won't speak up cuz they don't want to offend their "friends".
IF YOU AREN'T WILLING TO BE THEIR VOICE (even against your friends) YOU SHOULDN'T BE WORKING WITH OR ADVOCATING FOR ANIMALS PERIOD.
We will continue protesting and continue to bring to light what REALLY happens behind closed doors at the shelter, until it becomes what's best for the animals.

We would like to congratulate Detroit Animal Control on their 1000th transfer BUT we couldn't help but notice that Dr Bigwood was boasting about the "top notch care" and the full veterinary facilities at the shelter.
Makes us wonder then... Do they choose which animals to leave suffering without medical care dying and to die in the shelter? How do they decide? Who decides?
Mr. Nelson (a dog) was left to suffer with a pr*****ed re**um and received NO CARE let alone "top notch care". The animal control officer who got him help through a rescue was fired for her life saving efforts AND the rescue was banned from pulling more dogs (they were an approved transfer partner at the time of the incident). Another dog was brought into the shelter after being shot multiple times and laid suffering in his kennel for days before dying; also received no medical care. Countless others are also NOT receiving this "top notch care" that Dr Bigwood speaks so highly of.
When you hire a veterinarian from the highest kill shelter in Michigan with a bias against bully breeds... What more can you expect?
Congratulations to the sick puppy that made 1000 transfers >> YOU were a lucky one!
What are the numbers of those who weren't so lucky???
Protests are held every Wednesday at the shelter at 11am
7401 Chrysler Drive Detroit.

What are YOU doing Wednesday around 11am?
What better way to spend some time than speaking up for the animals of Detroit?

> 7401 Chrysler Drive Detroit Michigan <

DID YOU KNOW?

✔ specific rescues are banned from pulling dogs from the shelter because they spoke up about conditions at the shelter, illegal and immoral activities, and because they're not "liked" by staff >> while they euthanize healthy adoptable dogs for space

✔ dogs are housed with life threatening injuries and illnesses without medical care and die at the shelter

✔ An animal control officer was fired for seeking the help of a rescue to get medical care for a dog who's re**um was outside of his body.

✔ the same staff that is banning rescues are also board members for the non profit organization created to accept donations from the public to make the lives of these dogs better!

Do you find this unacceptable? Appalling even?
Then come on down Wednesday and show the city that we will not tolerate this any longer!

Detroit Animal Care and Control & Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control
How do you justify KILLING animals for space as you turn rescues away due to your PETTY EGOS?
Kumpf, McCaskill, Eldred, McClanahan, Bigwood, and probably others need to step down and walk away. Dogs are needlessly dying and their blood is on YOUR conscience and your hands.

When pound staff kill animals, they violate the animals’ right to life. But is “shelter” killing also a human rights issue?

Yes, as there are also human victims.

When California was considering a bill to make it illegal for “shelters” to kill animals if rescue groups were willing to save them, legislators heard horror stories from traumatized rescuers being denied animals who were instead killed, even though they were ready, willing, and able to save them: http://bit.ly/2R4VoJu.

Here's one such testimonial: “I went to the shelter because I was told they had a mother cat and four kittens that they had scheduled to be killed even though they were healthy. When I arrived to pick up the cat and kittens, the shelter manager asked to see me. She told me that a member of our rescue group wrote a letter complaining about the shelter to the Board of Supervisors and that they didn’t appreciate it. She told me I could therefore only have one kitten. I begged her to let me take them all, but she said that I couldn’t. She told me to pick one and she was going to euthanize the rest, including the mother cat. I didn’t know what to do. And so I picked. My hand was shaking as I filled out the paper work. After I got the kitten, I went outside and sat in the car. Then I threw up all over myself”: https://youtu.be/UzKrVYbQ3UE.

My own dog, Oswald, came from a pound that had a “no rescue” policy, choosing to kill an additional 4,000 animals a year. Thankfully, he entered that pound after we successfully passed the California law and he was rescued on what otherwise would have been his last day of life. He is not only one of roughly 90,000 additional animals being saved throughout the state that pound staff would have otherwise killed, but he was rescued by one of countless volunteers whose right to do so is now protected by law: https://bit.ly/2Q7eqPo.

Day in and day out, animal rescuers and shelter volunteers show tremendous courage and compassion — visiting a place that is hard for animal lovers to go: their local shelter. And yet they go back, again and again. Unless those rights are protected, they must endure the hostile treatment. They endure the heartbreak of seeing the animals they care about destined for the needle. They endure having to jump through unnecessary and arbitrary hurdles set by shelter directors who are holding the animals they want to save hostage.

Indeed, a new study found that the higher the rates of killing at a pound, the greater the trauma to volunteers. If we want to protect the rights of people who volunteer at shelters, we need to reform the pounds. Not only does doing so protect animals, but it radically transforms the culture of a shelter, making it a safe, hospitable, even rewarding place to volunteer: https://bit.ly/3CVyxr1.

Take Valerie, a volunteer who fostered a litter of kittens for the Tompkins County, NY, shelter before I became their director in the early 2000s. She stopped volunteering after kittens she had fostered were killed, even though staff promised they would call if they had a “space crunch” and needed her to take them back into foster care. When she came to the shelter and some of them were no longer there, she “checked the logbook to see when they were adopted. Instead, I was stunned to learn that two of them had been killed. I never even received a telephone call or an email asking that I take them back. They had been perfectly healthy and loved and wanted, and they had a place to go if the shelter ran out of room. I felt sick. The room began spinning. I was in tears. I’ll never forget the looks of shock on the faces of the other volunteers. The staff didn’t budge. One other volunteer was concerned and tried to stop me from leaving, but I fled the building and somehow managed to bike the several miles home, even though I could barely see for crying”: https://youtu.be/UzKrVYbQ3UE.

That all changed when I took over as director and we stopped killing (and Valerie, who had quit, started fostering again), something that could have been done at any time. No one is “required” to kill animals. No one is forced to do so against their will. As Tompkins County proved then and hundreds of communities and the data nationally have since reaffirmed, shelter killing is a choice: https://youtu.be/z-CwFaUsuTg.

Of course, it is the animals who pay the ultimate price when the programs and services which make No Kill possible are not comprehensively implemented: https://youtu.be/JCTt5JppNA8, but they are not the only ones who suffer. Animal rescuers and shelter volunteers are already donating their time, their energy, their resources and their love to make our world a better place. They shouldn’t have to sacrifice their emotional well-being, too.

We have a tip for all the employees/staff of Detroit Animal Control....
Document EVERYTHING and pick at least one or two major issues to bring to the attention of your "higher ups" directly. ~ You never know if you'll be the next one fired for "just doing your job" (like Melanie Thomas was).
In that event, you'll have something to fall back on to file a whistle blower lawsuit and possibly retain your job while this whole mess gets sorted out.
We don't want to see any more good ones get shoved out the door... We need y'all there when the smoke clears.

We’re putting on our best puppy dog eyes.

DACC is absolutely full and there are no more kennels left for the dogs that come in every day. As an open intake shelter, DACC does legally have to utilize humane euthanasia when there are more dogs than spaces.

Shelter population skyrockets over the course of a normal week, and very few dogs left the shelter this weekend.

If you’re looking to adopt or foster a dog, please check out our four legged friends at the shelter between 10:30-3:30. They need a home to go to as soon as possible.

Pictured is Harvard with his absolute best 🥺 who can resist??

Hey? What are ya doing Wednesday?
Come on down to Detroit & Stand up / Speak up for the animals! Show your support for Melanie Thomas, the animal control office who was fired for getting a dog much needed medical help when the shelter left him in a kennel with his re**um hanging out of his body! Show your concern that rescues are being denied access to Detroit Animal Care and Control to help these dogs based on personal feelings and egos! Show the city that you believe killing dogs who have other options is not acceptable!
Come on down! ~ Wednesday September 8th at 11am

How did Detroit Animal Control hit such a downward spiral when there was so many improvements made after the 2015 "rise up" against the barbaric and inhumane practices that existed back then?

We think these are/were the biggest contributing factors that got us where we are today...

✔ They retained corrupt employees from 2015 who were fighting AGAINST any changes back then,

✔ 2 years ago, they hired an incompetent director with a track record of allowing dogs to suffer and putting public safety at risk,

✔Then they hired a veterinarian from the highest kill shelter in Michigan.

Smh. They laid it all out in a neat little row that could only lead to failure.... And here we are!
