A great reminder for our equine friends during this cold spell!! ⛄️

FUN FACT FRIDAY!

Are you familiar with the many adaptations that help your horse stay warm during the cold winter months?

🌾 Hindgut digestion of hay produces the most heat, acting as a small furnace inside of the horse. This is why free choice; good quality hay is so important in the winter.

💪 Horses have a huge muscle mass and muscle activity produces heat. This includes running and playing and even shivering if their body temperature starts to drop. It is important to remember that these activities also will result in a bigger caloric demand so free choice hay and in some cases, grain, is often needed.

🧥 To blanket or not to blanket is a constant debate but either way, as it starts to get cold your horse will grow a thicker coat. If you decide to leave your horse unblanketed you may notice that they look “fluffy”. This is due to a phenomenon called piloerection where the hair stands up to better trap air within. Two layers of the coat also help with warmth. The inner layer is softer and has air pockets to create an insulating layer. The outer layer is coarse and has oils that keep moisture from penetrating the insulating layer and keep the horse warm.

⚖️ Wild horses go into the winter heavier than ideal, and the fat serves as an extra layer of insulation. However, if a horse is going to be kept heavily blanketed and in a barn during the cold weather months this is unnecessary and can lead to obesity related issues.

🦵Their distal limbs (below the knees and hocks) are made of mostly bones and tendons, tissues that are resistant to the cold temperatures.

🦶The hooves have an alternative route of blood circulation through larger vessels that can be used in low temperatures. This is why horses can stand in snow without detrimental effects.

👃A horse’s nose has a robust blood supply and is rounded so that it is less susceptible to frostbite than a human’s nose.

Circle C is now offering equine endoscopy at an afforable price!!
What is endoscopy you ask?
Endoscopy is a medical procedure that allows us to visualize certain areas within your horse's body. For example, if you are concerned that your horse may have stomach ulcers, we can perform a gastroscopy (stomach endoscopy) to visualize the inside of the stomach. This diagnostic tool allows us to tailor treatment specifically to your horse's concern.
If you have any questions about endoscopy or would like to discuss pricing, CALL and talk to one of our trained technicians today!

Great reminder from the American Association of Equine Practitioners on the importance of water intake for horses during the winter!
As always, if you feel your horse is not maintaining body condition through the winter, be sure to have them looked at by a veterinarian!

Water remains as important for your horse in cold weather as it is in the summer. As a matter of fact, decreased water consumption in the winter is thought to be the primary inducing factor for impaction colic — although there are other predisposing factors such as poor hay quality, lack of exercise, internal parasites and dental problems.

Impaction colic is essentially constipation and most often includes the accumulation of hard, dry f***l material in the colon. The usual signs of impending impaction colic are depression, a decreased appetite, and decreased production and dryness of manure.

Studies demonstrate that you can increase your horse's winter water consumption if you provide access to heated water, but ONLY if that is the only source of water available. As always, if you have any questions about preventing colic in your horse, your equine veterinarian remains your best source of information!

Our hearts go out to those who were affected by the fires last weekend. Sharing this for anyone willing/able to lend a hand!

The North Dakota Stockmen’s Association and North Dakota Stockmen’s Foundation have teamed up to support cattle-ranching families in North Dakota who have suffered catastrophic losses in the horrific wildfires. In addition to their own $50,000 gift, the NDSA and NDSF are inviting others to join with them to provide financial support to help these ranchers rise from the ashes and rebuild their herds, their homes and their hope. Checks can be sent to the North Dakota Stockmen’s Foundation with “Out of the Ashes” written in the memo, or credit card gifts can be made at https://app.givingheartsday.org/ #/charity/1576. The NDSA and NDSF will distribute 100% of the money raised to the victims of the wildfires through an application and nomination process. Applications will be available later this month. The NDSF is a 501(c)3.

One of the many roles our veterinarians play is a dentist!! Not only do cats and dogs need regular dentals exams … but our beloved equines do as well.
Fall is a perfect time to have your horse’s (or donkey’s) teeth examined by a veterinarian.
Keeping horses in their best health going into winter starts with their teeth. Equine teeth continuously grow and are worn down as they chew. However, many horses suffer from dental issues ranging from mild to severe … which impacts how evenly their teeth are worn down. Unevenly wore teeth can lead to sharp points that are painful. This can cause a horse to not properly chew their food increasing their risk of choke, colic and decreased body condition.
Dental exams and floats allow our veterinarians to reduce those sharp points and correct any other dental issues; which allows the horse to better chew their food leading to better digestion.
CALL and SCHEDULE your equine dental exam today to ensure your horse goes into winter in the best shape!
