We serve areas that are known for having prairie rattlesnakes and we have recently cared for animals that have suffered from a snake bite. Should your dog or horse be bitten by a rattlesnake, it is an emergency and it is important to receive prompt treatment. The course of treatment will vary with the patient, but we carry antivenin which can be used to treat both dogs and horses. Cardiovascular support with IV fluids along with pain management and antibiotics are all part of a successful recovery from a rattlesnake bite. The diagram shows the typical range of the prairie rattlesnake.

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month. Making sure our patients are comfortable includes close observation and addressing any discomfort they may be feeling. Being in pain can impact their overall health and ability to recover from illness or surgery. Making sure your pet is comfortable is one of our top priorities. Our clinic cat, Miss Kitty, has osteoarthritis and receives a monthly injection called Solensia to keep her comfortable and active. Solensia is a monoclonal antibody that works to reduce the negative impact Nerve Growth Factor has in osteoarthritic joints. By taking this medication, Miss kitty is able to do her favorite things like jump up in the window or onto the desk. We are dedicated to helping manage pain and assist animals in living their best life.

We have recently seen dogs with embedded grass awns. Grass awns are sharp, barbed grass seeds which are produced by certain types of grass. Grass awns burrow into the dog’s skin causing pain and infection. Grass awns can be inhaled, swallowed or pe*****te the dog’s skin. The dog’s feet, ears and eye/eyelids are common locations we find grass awns. You cannot fully protect your dog from grass awns contact, but grooming your dog immediately after a walk and removing residual grass from the haircoat is a good practice. If your pet is sneezing, shaking his head, squinting or limping after being out in tall grass, it is a good idea to have him seen by a veterinarian. Left untreated, grass awns can cause painful and extensive problems.

Did you know that dogs sweat through their paws? Dogs have a type of sweat glands called merocrine glands that are located in their paw pads. While sweating through their paws helps your dog cool down a little, the primary way they lower their body temperature is through panting. When a dog pants, the evaporating moisture on their tongue combined with the evaporation of the moist lining on their lungs cools them down. This is similar to the way evaporating sweat on the human body helps humans cool down. While dogs have mechanisms to cool themselves down, they are not always the most effective, making them prone to overheating in hot weather. To prevent your dog from overheating, limit their physical activity in hot weather, provide them with a cool place to rest and make sure they have fresh water available.

During the hottest months of the year, we need to be aware of the possibility of blue-green algae in lakes, ponds and streams. Blue-green algae can be toxic and dogs who love water are particularly at risk. If your dog does go into water with heavy algae growth, hose it off right away, before it has a chance to lick itself clean. Removing the algae before the dog can ingest any of it can prevent sickness. The primary signs of dogs ingesting toxic blue-green algae is gastrointestinal upset. This can be followed by liver injury. In addition, the algae may release toxins that lead to respiratory paralysis and seizures. If you believe your dog has been exposed to blue-green algae, immediate treatment of symptoms is necessary. Horses and other livestock are also susceptible to blue-green algae toxicity.

Great information if you are riding in hot weather!

Great information if you are riding in hot weather!

"Cool" hot weather tips! ☀️

The notion that a hot, recently exercised horse needs to walk until they are completely cooled off is a myth. A 2020 study found that out of the five methods tested, the quickest way to return to normal body temperature was stationary with continuous tap water application. This doesn't mean that you should abruptly stop exercise—finish your ride or training session with a slow walk to allow your horse's heart rate and breathing to gradually return to normal, but after that your sweaty, hardworking horse should be offered a cool shower and drinking water (small but frequent amounts) without delay.

Overall, enjoy your summer rides but be aware of signs of heat stress in your horse. When heat and humidity soar, even moderate exercise can push your equine friend's body temperature beyond safe limits! Be sure to contact your veterinarian for more information about heat stroke and for recommendations tailored to your horse's individual situation.

Information brought to you by the AAEP Horse Owner Education Committee.
