With patience, most cats can learn to have their nails trimmed. They will still be able to enjoy the scratching post and normal cat behavior, but will be much less destructive.
Cats have retractile claws so you need to gently squeeze the toe between thumb and forefinger to expose the claw. Most cats have light-colored claws, making it easy to see the blood vessels and nerves that supply the claw as a pink stripe at the base of the nail, which is called a quick. You will want to trim the nail in front of the quick.

The darker and more bitter the chocolate, the more dangerous it is to dogs. Even if the amount ingested is not a toxicity concern, dogs can still become ill from the fat and sugar in chocolate. These can cause pancreatitis in severe cases or in dogs that have more sensitive stomachs. To put this in perspective, a medium-sized dog weighing 50 pounds would only need to eat 1 ounce of baker’s chocolate, or 9 ounces of milk chocolate, to potentially show signs of poisoning. For many dogs, the most common clinical signs of poisoning are vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, panting or racing heart rate. In severe cases, symptoms can include muscle tremors, seizures, and heart failure. If your dog gets into chocolate, it is important to contact your veterinarian.

This is the time of year horses should receive their annual vaccinations. For our area, the core equine vaccinations are Rabies, Eastern/Western Equine Encephalomyelitis, Tetanus and West Nile. If your horse is going to brandings/rodeos or shows (any activity where your horse is around a number of other horses), we also recommend vaccinating for Equine Herpesvirus (Rhinopneumonitis) and Equine Influenza. The vaccines we select for your horse will vary with the horse's age, use, travel plans and living quarters, as well as the safety and efficacy of the vaccine. Onions are toxic to both cats and dogs. Onions contain a toxic principle known as N-propyl disulfide which in cats and dogs causes oxidative damage to the red blood cells. This can lead to red blood cells being destroyed in a process called hemolysis, resulting in hemolytic anemia. Cats are especially sensitive to the toxic effects of onions. If your pet has eaten onions, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. Clinical signs of onion toxicosis include lethargy, weakness, decreased appetite, vomiting and pale gums. Every part of the onion is poisonous, including the leaves, flesh, skin, and even the juice. Also, it doesn't matter whether the onion is cooked or raw. It's important to note that all types of onions are dangerous. White onions, yellow onions, red onions, green onions ... none of them are safe for pets. Onion powder is especially dangerous, and other forms — dried or dehydrated, fried, juiced, etc. — put your pet at risk as well.

Accidental ingestion of human prescription medications leads the list on animal poisonings reported to the Animal Poison Control Center. Many human medications are extended-release formulations and pets are at risk for a considerable time after ingestion. Accidents can happen no matter how careful you are, so if your pet gets into your medication, it is important to contact us immediately.

West Dakota Veterinary Clinic had the pleasure of welcoming some of the SWND homeschoolers for a special behind-the-scenes experience! 🩺🐾

Dr. Hannah Reetz took them on an exciting learning adventure, exploring what it’s like to be a veterinarian for a day. The students got hands-on experience with different types of animals, discovered the microscopic world, and even listened to the gentle heartbeats of two wonderful patients—Atlus, a brave cat, and Penny, a sweet pup. 💙🐶🐱

Thank you to the SWND homeschoolers for spending the day with us—we loved sharing our passion for animal care with you!

World Spay Day is held on the last Tuesday in February each year. This day aims to spread awareness of the long-term health benefits of spaying and neutering your cats, dogs and rabbits. By using this national holiday as a reminder, remember to check in with your veterinarian about the best time to spay or neuter your pets, which may vary by age, weight and s*x.

Shockwave therapy is a noninvasive, high-energy, pressure wave treatment, which is commonly used in human and veterinary medicine. It helps the body in relieving pain, speeding healing and improving the quality of healing. “Shock wave” does not refer to electrical shock. It is actually a high-energy SOUND wave treatment. Shock wave has been proven effective and is considered the gold standard of treatment for a variety of conditions that result in pain and lameness. We use shockwave therapy for both horses and small animals.

February is Pet Dental Health Month! Did you know:
Most dogs and cats already have some dental disease by age three?
Dental disease contributes to other health problems.
At-home dental care helps (such as brushing teeth and/or using dental treats)!
Annual cleanings are the best way to prevent the tartar, plaque, and bacteria buildup that leads to infection. By scheduling a dental exam, you can be proactive in protecting your pet’s oral health. Pictured is JaDee LVT doing a dental cleaning.

A Beautiful New Beginning! 🐴💙

With the watchful eyes of her veterinarians and the loving support of those who adore her, our sweet Penny has welcomed a beautiful baby boy into the world! ✨🌿
From the very first moment, Penny has shown what an incredible mother she is—nuzzling her little one, standing protectively by his side, and making sure he feels safe and loved. Watching her care for him with such tenderness is truly heartwarming.

It’s moments like these that remind us of the beauty and resilience of life. With wobbly first steps and soft, sleepy snuggles, this precious foal has already captured our hearts. We are so grateful for the wonderful veterinary team who helped ensure both mom and baby are healthy.

Join us in celebrating this little one’s arrival—he is already so loved! 💙🐴✨

💕 A Love as Big as Penny’s Heart 💕

This Valentine’s Day, we’re celebrating a very special kind of love—the unconditional, beautiful bond between a mother and her little one. 💖 Penny, our gorgeous mama-to-be, absolutely radiated grace and warmth during her maternity photo shoot. With her gentle spirit and loving heart, she reminds us that love comes in all forms, and sometimes, the best kind of love has four hooves and a flowing mane. 🌹🐴

Let’s show Penny some love this Valentine’s Day! Drop a ❤️ in the comments to send her well wishes for a safe and happy delivery! 🥰
