Lucia the Sloth from Wright Park Zoo has embarked on a brief vacation to visit our friends at the Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo. This temporary relocation is part of the transition as the City continues to look at improvements for Wright Park and the Wright Park Zoo. While in Great Bend, Lucia will participate in shared installations with other animals, gaining valuable experiences that will enrich her life. Last night, on December 4th, the City of Dodge City Commission hosted a work session focused on the Wright Park Action Plan. During the session, LK Architecture’s Director of Landscape Architecture Jeff Best and the City of Dodge City’s Director of Parks and Recreation Daniel Cecil presented a tour of the proposed plan for the Wright Park Zoo. The 3D Rendering offered a glimpse into a multitude of potential outcomes for the future Zoo design It's important to note that this is just a proposal and has not yet been approved by the commission; it serves as a guide for future planning. Tomorrow, October 21, is the Frights for Bites event in Wright Park from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Admission is just $3.00 per person, and children ages 1 and under enter for free! Come enjoy an evening filled with tasty treats and excitement. All proceeds will benefit the USD443 Nutrition Department. We look forward to seeing you at Wright Park!

October 4th is international day of zookeepers.

International Zoo Keepers Day first happened in 2015, when ICZ (International Congress of Zookeepers) declared it an annual global event in recognition of the valuable contribution this category of zoo workers make to animal care and conservation.

Happy International Raccoon Appreciation Day!

Did you know?

Raccoons are a mammal found in North America. Though mostly active at night, they can sometimes be seen during the day looking for food or water. While they come to the ground to eat and drink, they sleep in hallow trees where they are safe from most predators. While wild raccoons typically only live 2-3 years, in human care they can live up to 20!

With heavy hearts and moving forward with the Master Plan of Re-Do the Zoo. The capuchins, ring-tailed lemurs, and red-tailed hawks got transferred out to another facility, Canton Grand Safari Adventure in Texas. We will miss you and good luck at your new home.

As National Zookeeper Week ends, Today we are celebrating Head Zookeeper Roger!

Favorite animal: Penguin

Favorite animal currently working with or have worked with: Tiger

Favorite animal fact: Emu's can't walk backwards.

Roger has earned his Bachelor's in Biology with the focus of Zoology and a Psychology minor. He graduated from Western Illinois University in 2017 with Biology Honors. He has worked at Peoria Zoo and Kentucky Reptile Zoo prior to coming to Dodge City, KS and has been in the field since 2016. Thank you for all that you do!

Our Keepers are the very best! They are missing all their visitors this year, as are our little animals that are still at the zoo. If you are at Wright Park and see Roger or Rhea working at the zoo please say hi to them and tell them they are appreciated!

Favorite Animal: Snow Leopard

Favorite Animal Fact: Snow leopard tails can act as a scarf to keep them warm and their big paws act as snow shoes.

Favorite animal you are working with or have worked with: Ring Tailed Lemur

Rhea has also worked as a Vet Tech and has always loved animals and caring for them as long as she can remember. Thank you for your hard work and dedication. The animals and staff greatly appreciate everything you bring to the table.

National Zookeeper Week has arrived!!!!! We love our keepers, Roger and Rhea! One of the things the keepers asked us to do when we started Sloth Encounters was to consider donating a portion of every Sloth Encounter to a conservation project. So to start this week we are sending our first donation of $600 to The Sloth Conservation Foundation in the name of Lucia and our keepers!

National Zookeeper Week is here! This week we will highlight our staff and appreciate the amazing individuals that have stepped up and have taken the title of Zookeeper and all the hard work behind being one.

Thank you for all you do as the animal care field isn't easy. It's intensive, demanding, laborious, and can even, at times, be heart breaking. We see you, the work you put in. We see the passion and dedication it takes every single day. The animals sincerely thank you with all of the effort you put in to make their quality of life the best it can be.
