Here in Training we are starting our body language series with the ears of our dogs!
Some fun facts about your dog's ears. As well as some pictures to help you decode your dog a bit better!
Hearing
Dogs can hear sounds that humans can't, up to four times farther away. They also have a higher hearing frequency than humans.

Ears are sensitive
Dogs' ears are very sensitive and have a lot of blood supply. They can take a long time to heal if cut.

Ears move independently
Dogs have 15–18 muscles that move their ears in all directions, allowing them to listen independently with each ear. They can also "shut off" their inner ear to filter out distracting noises.

Ears are L-shaped
Dogs have long, narrow, L-shaped ear canals.

Ears contain pheromones
Dogs' ears have special wax and oil glands that contain pheromones, which trigger a social response in other dogs. For example, dogs often sniff each other's ears when they meet.

Ears are prone to infections
Dogs are more likely to get ear infections than humans because of the shape of their ear canals. For example, dogs with long floppy ears, or those that swim a lot, are more likely to get ear infections because moisture can get trapped in the ear and create an environment for bacteria to grow.

Puppies are born deaf
Puppies are born with their eyes and ear canals closed, and these senses develop slowly over time

Puppy Socialization: Surfaces
Introducing different kinds of surfaces and tactile experiences to your puppy will help them be more comfortable in a variety of environments. From the feel of a bathtub under their paws to smooth concrete floors to rocks or sand, having experience standing and walking on these different surfaces helps build body awareness. By knowing how it feels to stand and walk on various textures, your puppy can become more confident and sure-footed.

When introducing your puppy to new surfaces, keep it positive and fun! Never force them onto a surface that they are cautious about — simply reward any approach or interest in the new surface and allow them to explore it at their own pace. When introducing unstable surfaces, make sure that your puppy feels supported and you are there to help them learn how to adjust their body weight as needed.
