Tampa Bay House Rabbit Rescue

Tampa Bay House Rabbit Rescue All of TBHRR's Directors have been involved with animal rescues and have several years' experience with domestic house rabbits.

As an all-volunteer-run, foster-home-based, donation-supported, 501(c)(3) public charity and rescue for domestic house rabbits in the Tampa Bay Area of Florida, TBHRR takes strays, euthanasia list cases, hoarder confiscations, and some shelter transfers. TBHRR is a proud ally of the House Rabbit Society ("HRS"), an international non-profit rabbit rescue and educational organization headquartered i

n Richmond, California, where The Rabbit Center serves the San Francisco Bay Area. TBHRR's Board of Directors currently has two (2) Licensed HRS Educators, who serve as its President and its Treasurer, and one (1) HRS Educator-in-Training, who serves as its Secretary. Each of us are dedicated and focused on the mission and goals of this federally-recognized 501(c)(3) rescue. TBHRR strives to continue to better itself. If you have an idea, suggestion, or would like to help in any way, we would love to hear from you. TBHRR strives to be as transparent as possible; we have an open book philosophy, so if you do not see an answer to a question here, please ask us via private message on Facebook or email us at [email protected]! TBHRR is an all-volunteer-run, foster-based rescue. If you’re interested, we would love to have you join our rescue family! We currently need volunteers for:

Foster Homes: Being a temporary loving home to a single rabbit or bonded pair of rabbits looking for their forever homes is a very rewarding experience! We provide the comprehensive free education and the housing necessities/supplies, while you provide the greens/veggies and love. Events: Setting-up & breaking-down tables, exercise pens, litter boxes, and the occasional tent, not to mention just being on-hand to make sure the rabbits stay safe and are treated correctly by the public. Fundraisers: Organizing and conducting fundraisers, design crafty projects, bunny toy-making parties, the positive flow of ideas, creative brainstorming, including anything else with which you would like to lend a hand. Transportation: Help us by transporting rabbits, as all of our Board members work full-time jobs. Transport help for rabbits to-and-from our veterinarian, spay/neuter clinic, and/or between foster homes is very much appreciated!

In preparation for the impending storm, FDACS has prepared a flyer with the hotline number for Emergency Assistance for Livestock and Animals. The FL SART website is also a good resource for information.

Fireworks can trigger anxiety and stress responses in rabbits resulting in them running away, behaving aggressively, refusing to eat and even dying. This holiday please remember:

1-) To keep your rabbits safely INDOORS, preferably with a radio or TV turned on to soften jarring noises.

2-) Please provide your rabbits with extra hay to allow them to burrow and increase their feelings of comfort and security.

3-) Please make sure your rabbits have a hiding box so they can hide as needed.

4-) Close all windows and draw the curtains. If you cannot draw the curtains please partly cover your rabbits’ cage, hutch or playpen with blankets. This will limit your rabbits’ exposure to bright flashes and thundering booms.

5-) Try to feed your rabbits before the fireworks start so they will have a full stomach and feel more relaxed.

6-) After fireworks do the treat test. If they reject the treat they may have an emergency with GI stasis.

Unfortunately your neighbors do not care about your rabbits when they set the fireworks. 💔😞

Your rabbit’s safety depends on you.

🚨 PET INSURANCE ALERT 🚨

We do not have any details. Reading between the lines of the article, it appears to be based on what state you live in, not necessarily species or breed. We'll provide any additional reports we come across if it appears to improve overall information.

The country's biggest provider of pet insurance cites rising cost of veterinary care in pulling product in some states.

The large, deadly Cane toad (a.k.a. Bufo toad) is back, and they're most active during the rainy season. If you let your bun out in your yard (please don't, for many reasons, but if you do) it's possible that your rabbit will encounter one. When frightened or attacked, they release a toxin that WILL make your bun or other pet sick and can be fatal in a little as 15 minutes. A rabbit can pick up the toxin by just hopping through a trail of it left by a frightened Cane toad, then ingest it by cleaning its fur.

The effects of cane toad toxin are almost immediate. Some of the symptoms to watch for are: excessive drooling, convulsions, eddened gums, head shaking, loss of coordination, and more. For a rabbit, you can try to wipe the gums, tongue and inside the cheeks with a dish towel to remove toxins, but rabbits being what they are, it may not be possible. Get your bun to the vet!

Cane toads are an invasive species that do not have any place in the Florida ecosystem, and can be humanely killed. If you prefer not to do that, but can capture them, a wildlife trapper can take it off your hands, or help capture it. Florida does not allow relocating and release of cane toads. If you must handle this toad with your hands, use protective latex gloves at all times.
