September is Animal Pain Awareness Month. 🐾
Animals show signs of pain in different ways. Some animals are very stoic and show subtle signs, or none at all! If you spot any of these common signs of pain from your pet, contact your veterinarian. There can be multiple different causes for your pet's pain!
Sunday is Ginger Cat Appreciation Day! 🐱
One interesting fact about ginger cats? Most of them are boys. The gene that produces that ginger color is on the X chromosome. Since females are always XX, that means female kitties need two copies of the gene to become redheads.

Many of us will be heading outdoors during the months ahead, which means a higher chance of tick exposure for us, and our pets. Ticks can carry diseases, like Lyme disease, that pose serious health risks. Be wary of overgrown bushes, dense vegetation, and excessive yard debris, as these are prime hideouts for ticks.
Make sure to protect your pet with year-round tick prevention and the Lyme Disease vaccine!
When taking your pet for a walk, always make sure to test the pavement first! 🐾
Even at "cooler" temperatures, the pavement can be hot and cause damage to your pet's paw pads within minutes. If the pavement is too hot for you, then it's too hot for your pet!
Tomorrow is National Black Cat Appreciation Day! 🐱🖤
There's a superstition that black cats are bad luck, but they make just as good of a pet as any other color cat! By statistics, black cats and dogs are less likely to be adopted based solely on their coat color. Next time you're adopting a pet, consider a black coated one!
It's National Check the Chip Day! ✅
Today, we encourage pet owners to check their pet’s microchip information annually and keep it up-to-date. It's also a good opportunity to check the info on your pet's ID tag. By doing this yearly, you increase your pet’s chances of returning home, if lost!

If your dog likes to swim in or drink from lakes, be cautious of harmful algal blooms (HABs)! These blooms produce toxins that can damage the liver, skin, and central nervous system.
💧 Harmful algal blooms thrive in freshwater lakes, rivers, and ponds during the summer and fall. Look out for floating mats, scums, or discolored water in shades of green, blue-green, yellow, or brown. HABs can also appear as foam, froth, or film on the surface of the water.
⚠️ HABs are highly poisonous to all animals, including humans, but dogs are especially vulnerable due to their tendency to swim in or drink from any water source. It's often difficult to distinguish HABs from non-harmful algae, so when in doubt, keep your dog out!
🚿 If your dog gets into suspicious water, remove them immediately and prevent them from licking their fur or paws. Use a towel to remove the debris, then wash your dog with soap and clean water using rubber gloves. Wash your hands thoroughly afterward. Monitor your dog for signs of illness, including diarrhea, vomiting, excessive drooling, foaming at the mouth, or stumbling.

Delilah is a 7-8 yr old Labrador Retriever. She was a stray that surprised the dog shelter by delivering 2 pups one morning before they came in to work. Both her pups have been adopted.
She had to have major dental work and lost a good portion of her teeth and also had some mammary lumps removed, which all turned out benign.
Her adoption fee is $250

Mixed breed dogs have hit the genetic lottery! The blending of genes helps fight deficiencies by providing healthier gene sequences from other breeds. Officials with the Tuscarawas County Health Department have seen a 68% increase in reported human Lyme disease cases from May 1 through June 30. It's important to not only protect yourself, but also protect your pets from tick borne diseases! We've been seeing an increase in canine cases the last few years. With the Lyme disease vaccine, we've been able to lower the infection rate in our established patients!
There have been 74 suspected Lyme cases among Tuscarawas County residents from May 1 through June 30.

Ciara Lynn and Colby Spencer are looking for a new home! Due to unforeseen life changes, Ciara and Colby's owner needs to rehome them to a new, loving home that can provide them with the care and attention they need. Ciara and Colby are both 8 years old, around 15 lbs, and spayed/neutered. They're both energetic and loving dogs with great personalities! Ciara and Colby are both current on vaccinations, blood parasite screens, and flea/tick/heartworm prevention. They will both be fully vetted before going to their new home. They have lived together since pups. It's preferred that they both stay together in their new home, however separate homes will be considered.

Fleas aren't just an annoyance — they can also carry dangerous bacteria. One such germ known as Bartonella can infect dogs, cats, and other mammals (including humans), resulting in a serious disease called Bartonellosis. Ticks, lice, and sand fleas can also transmit Bartonella bacteria to animals. Symptoms of infection in pets include fever, vomiting, lethargy, red eyes, swollen lymph nodes, and/or decreased appetite. Infection can persist for months with clinical signs appearing when the cat is under stress (surgery or trauma) or concurrent with another disease.
Is your pet suffering from allergies?
Pet allergies can present in many different ways. Signs can vary from respiratory symptoms, skin irritation, to GI symptoms. It's important to know what kind of allergy you're dealing with before treatment. Some allergies can be environmental, while others can be food allergy. Allergy testing and hypoallergenic diet trials may be necessary to control allergies. The good news is there are many safe and new medications that can be used to manage allergy symptoms with minimal side effects!

There are many species of ticks in Ohio. Two of the most harmful are the Blacklegged (Deer) tick and American Dog tick. They both transmit diseases to animals and humans, but only the Deer tick is known to transmit Lyme Disease. Nymph ticks are very small, about the size of a poppy seed, but still able to transmit disease. The only ways to protect your pet are with year-round tick prevention and the Lyme Disease vaccine!

Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted by the bite of a deer tick. It's been found that this bacteria spreads throughout the body by crawling along the inside wall (the endothelium) of blood vessels. Roo is enjoying her new cart! This was from the first time she tried her cart, so she was a little nervous. Once she figured it out with the help some coaxing and treats, Roo was enjoying rolling around and looking at the scenery! 🐾
Look at her go! Roo is getting used to her temporary wheelchair. She still has a lot of practicing and strengthening to do. With a little time, she'll be zooming around!
