This independently run page is dedicated to increasing adoptions for the pets impounded at the Downey Animal Care Center, a high intake shelter located in Downey California (suburban Los Angeles). We welcome all responsible networkers and crossposters and will endeavor to provide them with as much accurate information as possible about the shelter's impounded pets. Please note that most

of the Downey Animal Care Center staff do not have access to this page on their computers - and therefore cannot monitor Facebook posts offering rescue or adoption. The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control requires that all adoptions be done in person - and does not accept adoption offers via telephone, or Facebook.

As of today (September 7, 2020) there have been a few volunteers allowed back at the shelter. (Those over 65 and with pre-existing medical conditions are not.)

The few that are allowed back are there mainly on the weekends and in 2-3 hour increments.

We are not sure when we will ALL be allowed back - and to be able to work again with our animals. It is has been extremely tough on all of us who care so much about our critters - but we have to comply with County regulations.

Please look directly at the County website for available dogs/cats.

Hi all!

We are all bombarded with pandemic and COVID-19 news. Things change rapidly, often within a few hours. This is all new territory for the Department and the County.

A few updates:

Some of you have reached out to me regarding a rescue’s IG post stating that the Department is going to euthanize animals if fosters are not available. This is categorical untrue. As stated on our website and other media outlets: "During this closure, the health and safety of the animals in our care remains our top priority. Please know that during this time, no animals will be euthanized unless they are irremediably suffering, dangerous, or unable to eat without assistance."
Our Department is working with many wonderful, approved adoption partners for positive outcomes. Currently we are accepting Commitment to Adopt (CTAs) and Interested Parties (IPs) over the phone. This is a first.

Overall, our field services remain the same. We still respond to emergency calls, investigate potential cases, and provide community assistance. We are working to ensuring lost pets are reunited with families and that animals in need of a home are placed. Currently all events, outreach, offsite, and other activities that are targeted toward groups are postponed.

We are working on -and refining- an “interaction by appointment” process. This will help support suggested social distancing standards as well as allow us to help get animals placed. We need to follow mandated protocols. This will need volunteer support.

Volunteer protocols are being updated to reflect the current needs of the Care Center. More information will be coming to you shortly.

As always… a huge thanks! Keep calm, be wise, stay healthy.
