Fridays with friends! 🥰🐾. By the way, both Charley and Phoebe (in the second picture) are both mini Bernadoodles. Isn’t it crazy how different the same breed can look? They’re both ridiculously adorable in their own ways! Have a great weekend everyone!

Charley is truly unlike any other Bernadoodle I’ve ever met. He is hysterical and goofy (typical), but most of all, we are absolutely in love with his 80s mullet! Lexie says he has a “level 5 forehead.” Middle schoolers know exactly how to word things. Lol. I expect him to rock out in heavy metal at any minute. 🤣🤣 My second job rocks (pun intended). The best part is that is that his owner has such a great sense of humor about him!

Huge shout out to Colleen, Brandon, and Jasper (with some help from Pancake) for their continued hard work! Jasper is dog reactive and, admittedly, his mama suffered from some fear and anxiety regarding this. After working soo hard for a couple of months on being the leader and walking correctly, etc., the first amazing piece of news is that Jasper is now entire OFF PROZAC!!! Hooray! Behavioral training really works!! No more meds! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
In addition to this, we worked on giving Jasper (and his mama) time and space to conquer their anxieties today. So much of the time, we are in such a rush to make change happen right away. A critical part of change is slowing down and giving your dog time to get comfortable in his environment before trying to conquer a new trigger. Take your time! Be patient. Breathe. Walk around and just BE for a while. Look at the progression of the proximity of Jasper to Pancake as the time went by. He starting far away and barking incessantly. After about 10 minutes, they were 10 feet apart. Five minutes after that, they were five apart, and so on. Then we walked. Walking makes dogs friends (when done the correct way). By the end, Pancake was in Jasper’s house, and they happily coexisted, completely relaxed for almost the entire time.

Key take aways… your dog may not need meds!
Patience and calmness are so important when training. Trust. Believe in yourself and your dog.

Way to go, Jasper and crew! You have one proud trainer here!

India thought she could help cheer up poor Cole, who is sporting the cone of shame. Thank GOODNESS his surgery was a success and everything was benign. Happy wedding to his (human) brother! And thank you, India, for bringing your smiles and good energy for the weekend! 🐾❤️

It has been a HOT (and by hot, I mean SWELTERING) week, but I need to give credit to two sets of committed owners who were willing to bear the heat for the good of their dogs (and don’t worry, we worked in shaded areas and tested the ground carefully before we worked).

The first is Buddy and Cody’s owner. Buddy, a Labradoodle, was becoming more and more reactive on walks, making it impossible for his owner to walk him and his big brother, Cody. They would get tangled, Buddy would bark and lunge at other dogs, bikes, etc. Wait until you see how beautifully both he and his brother walk together now! Keep up the good work, Colleen!

The other pup is Jasper, and Australian Shepherd, who was an anxious mess! He was constantly stressed, couldn’t settle down, and really didn’t know his role in the family. After the first week, I was amazed to see the difference in Jasper’s demeanor. He was calm, happy, and peacefully chewed a bone in the floor instead of jumping up and down in the couch, and frantically demanding attention from his owners (another) Colleen and Brandon. This week, we worked on walking, because like Buddy, Jasper used to make walking a nightmare for his owners. He barked at other dogs, golf carts, bikes, people, you name it. Tonight, he proved how much he’s been yearning for leadership and walked like a champ! He proudly had his ears back and his little nub was wagging away. His owners did great and I think Jasper is ready to wean off Prozac!! That’s the best news of all! Of course, we will consult with the vet, but the owners have seen more behavioral changes in two weeks than over a year with him on Prozac. It’s another reason why behavior modification is so very important!

Friends, your dogs WANT to be led. They WANT to know they don’t have to protect you because you are in charge. This takes no yelling, no negativity, simply positive reinforcement, commitment, and consistency!

Way to go , Colleen, Colleen, Brandon, Buddy, Cody, and Jasper! May you continue to find more and more success!!

Just a typical “relaxing” afternoon at Polite Paws. Just a little bit of fur, a little bit of barking, some playing, some attempt to cool down from the heat outside, the 400th 40 gallon water bowl of the day, you know… the typical. 😂😂 Sound on.

Henry’s mom and dad have been working hard to help Henry relax and not be so frantic, especially when guests come over. He also has had a strange mental block form walking down his driveway. Some dogs need a little motivation from a friend, which Pancake was happy to provide. After a few short practices, Henry was prancing down the driveway with both Mom and Dad, proud as can be!
