❤️This lovely girl arrived at our hospital exhibiting lethargy and a lack of appetite. Following an examination and some diagnostics, the doctor discovered that she had a pyometra.
Pyometra is a serious and life threatening infection of the uterus. The infection can cause the uterus to fill with bacteria. It is more common in middle aged to older female dogs who have not been spayed.
Pyometra is caused by hormonal changes but most commonly from bacteria that can enter the uterus from the vagina.
Pyometras can be open or closed. In an open pyometra the cervix remains open and you will be able to see purulent or bloody discharge out of the v***a. When the pyometra is closed the cervix is shut and you will not be able to see the discharge.
This condition is best treated with surgery to remove the ovaries and uterus (spay). The surgery for a pyometra is often more complicated than a normal spay.
Symptoms can include:
* Discharge: A foul-smelling discharge from the v***a that can be white, yellowish, green, or clear
* Pain or discomfort: A bloated or painful belly
* Changes in behavior: Depression, lethargy, or unusual collapse
* Changes in appetite: Poor appetite or lack of energy
* Changes in urination and thirst: Increased urge for water and increased urination
* Other symptoms: Nausea or vomiting, fever, pale gums, or frequent panting
