MYSTERY ILLNESS UPDATE

Awhile back I posted an article with a map that showed Idaho to have at least 1 documented case of this contagious, potentially bad respiratory illness in dogs. Personally I haven't heard of any cases, so I decided to check in with some of our local veterinarians.

Apparently the info on that map was incorrect as the Idaho State Veterinarian has stated there have been no cases documented in our state. One veterinary hospital in Jackson, WY said they have not seen any cases yet. So, let's cross our paws and hope things continue and we don't get hit with it here!

Mystery Dog Illness 2023

"Researchers at University of New Hampshire’s Veterinary Diagnosis Laboratory told NBC News that they've identified a bacterium that could be behind the surge in respiratory illness in dogs, but more testing is needed to confirm.

Symptoms of the mystery dog illness include:

Coughing that doesn't get better on its own after a week or so
Sneezing
Nasal or eye discharge
Red eyes
Lethargy
Trouble breathing, especially from the stomach
Blue or purple gums (due to not getting enough oxygen)"

Cases have been reported in Oregon, Colorado, Indiana, Illinois, Washington, Idaho, California and more.

Mystery Dog Illness UPDATE: it is Spreading

This 'mystery dog illness' which starts with a cough, and can rapidly proceed to serious pneumonia, is now been reported in 14 U.S. states, but is likely in many more.

Cases have been reported in 14 U.S. states stretching from Florida to California and the cause of the mysterious illness remained under investigation.

Confirmed cases are in these U.S. states:
California
Colorado
Florida
Georgia
Idaho
Illinois
Indiana
Maryland
Massachusetts
New Hampshire
Oregon
Rhode Island
Vermont
Washington

Decades ago, before Ramble & Wag was formed, I looked after a special cat for about 3 months. "Buzz" was an amazing patient after he broke a bone in his foot. I will never forget him and the special bond we formed during that time. 🐈🐾💞
