Stone Hollow Homestead We are a small family homestead next to the Little Maquoketa River in the Midwest Driftless Region. Stone Hollow Gardens began in 2015.

Christopher and Emily Appelman moved into a windmill house nestled between two limestone ridges. The month after they moved in they broke ground, readying themselves for the garden to follow. A month and a half later they were already selling plant starters at the Dubuque Farmers Market. Since then they have become known as the local foragers and growers. Eight months out of the year they organica

lly farm, cultivate and forage mushrooms, and make jams/preserves with berries gathered from around their local area. Their cultivated mushrooms are grown outside on logs. This growing method enhances flavor and makes each mushroom variety seasonal. Outside of the season they offer dehydrated mushrooms. Stop by the Dubuque Farmer's Market and visit the Stone Hollow Gardens stand. Throughout the season stay updated weakly on what will be at their stand. Dubuque Farmer's Market is every Saturday, beginning the first weekend in May, from 7am to 12pm.

A busy busy week for The little’s and “The Papa” on this almost Homestead as well as Getting all things ready for opening day of Dubuque Farmers' Market, Settling in, finding our footing and spending every day in exploration of our new surroundings and wood fired home at Massey while Preparing to celebrate sparrowhawks’s ninth trip around the sun this Sunday 😳……

Beyond Grateful for this beautifully safe place for me and the girls to rest our heads and heal from what this was…. Thank you sister Lydia for the roof over my head….. appreciate and love you more than you could ever imagine sister….. your the absolute bestest of friends and the most amazing landlady ever 👊🙏😉!

Time to move forward and rebuild….
Whatever that may look like it’s time for something new!

Working on something new and getting a few artistic creations in absolutely cute miniature(I think I’m getting the hang of this new thing) mushrooms & the likes 😉 More to come as I find my footing and my hands get used to the very little workings of something new…..we also pulled the first round of black garlic out of curing, and it turned out absolutely beautiful and deliciously Sweet OMG you’ll be seeing more of that on the horizon…… also explored the many docks, riverbank , Nooks and crannies to our hearts content because it’s literally our backyard…… Sparrow And Esmae are beyond in love with the cottage as well as this beautiful place they get to explore whenever they’re with me….. again grateful and may be a tad bit excited to navigate this unknown road forward…. But we’re getting there….. so many irons in the fire right now! But Looking forward to catching up and making up for last time with my girls, a summer of camping, canoeing, fishing and exploration is just over the horizon!

But this evening, I am grateful and beyond happy to have the tribe I have!

A quick-ish unpacking of all the things (must have Creature comforts)😵‍💫getting grounded and settling in at “the Cottage”…….. and oh my does it feel good to be free & spread our wings🪽 a bit 🏡 !

And in general meandering and exploration of the marina and park, worked on a few art pieces in Miniature😉🍄‍🟫👊 for opening day of Dubuque Farmers' Market, A quick rolling out and unpacking of Sparrow & Esmae’s Bedroom🎉(the girls love their new space) And an every day gathering of wood 🪵 and
stoking of the fire 🔥……..

Making a Market plan, getting cozy & staying🪵🔥Warm, Settling in, finding our footing And starting to set a few roots once again…….Been a long journey here…..but Things are looking up friends🤞………

It’s been a long road and a perilous journey to get back home friends, and after several weeks of healing and navigating life AFTER, we’re almost back to the ways of soil, timber🌲 and every day natures beauty halfway there and bound to the city no longer……… Off to the cottage we go!

A crazy busy couple weeks spent finding my footing as well as carefully navigating a very unknown path forward…….

Spending as much time with the Littles as I can when I can in between the hustle and bustle of rebuilding and starting from scratch, everyday preparations for opening Dubuque Farmers' Market almost 2 months away, A commendable grow room almost set up for veggie🪴starters and the likes (thank you and so much love Tom & Danika ❤️) and almost ready to start sowing🌱seeds, an abundance of future Black🧄Garlic curing for opening market day and more on the way, every other day trips out of the storage unit & packing once again, a fourth change of address in under nine months and in two days we move into the Coziest Little wood🪵fired🔥Cottage….to lay our heads and heal a bit…and Safe Space for me and the Girls…..

Moving forward With a little bit of what we’ve done 😉 and a little something New, establishing a home & loving my girls, Prepping for a season of unsurmountable unknowns and Navigating
the sometimes precarious twists, turns, ups, downs and many tributaries of life…….

On to the next chapter, whatever that may be…… 🤞wish us luck friends 😉❤️‍🩹👊

“The Papa” Bear, Snow-sploring, beyond brilliant Snow sculpting and Winter games, fun at the museum, library time, creative crafting and finally an actual SNOW Day in the driftless……. A week well spent with the Little’s 🥰 And it’s finally looking like Winter in the Midwest…..

Catching up with a few dear friends❤️and tribe, spending every moment I can with my littlest and most important of loves SparrowHawk & Mae Mae Moon, finding my footing, Figuring out what’s next 😵‍💫 and who I am

The most hilarious card games, slightly chilly downtown walks, weekly arts & crafts at the library, late night munching and amazing conversations with our not so little bird Sparrow, every week Friday & Saturday craft projects with “The Papa”, Making up for way too much lost time, embracing the little moments in between things and preparing for a season of unsurmountable unknowns !

Crossing my fingers and hoping for the best……. We’ll see what this coming season and a new lease on life brings 🤞Wish us luck friends!

Dickeyville lol with the same

A beautiful birthday week indeed, much-needed family time, ups and downs 😉❤️‍🩹👊for sure, Beautiful moments and precious memories made……

If there’s one thing I’ve learned on this journey and along the way, is all that matters in the end are the little moments in between things and those precious memories made with the ones you love most………I’ll take it !

Weekdays spent rebuilding, finding my footing😵‍💫 and place 🏡 , navigating almost everyday Doctors appointments, checkups, follow ups, every other day intravenous fluids, scans and post treatment tests……

And ever grateful weekends well spent with Sparrow and Mae Mae Moon Embracing each day and every minute spent together…..every day we can get…….living in the moment !

A busy busy three weeks home thus far…..picking up the pieces, building up my strength as well as health in between things while making up for lost time with the Littles…. starting to feel a little bit more like myself each day and cherishing the little things along the way……and….Feeling grateful today 😉👊 !!

We Slayed the beast & Rang the bells at Mayo welcoming our reward of finally going home……. Now I’m back focusing on Health & home no matter what that may look like…..laying out those much needed creature comforts…..

Centering, finding solid ground and with a little back yard wood firing in between things I’m starting to regain that feel of hearth and home……and because sometimes a man’s just gotta have a sit and burn some stuff to ground his 💔Heart & Soul…..

An Amazing Christmas 🎄well spent with Mamma Bear, Sparrow and Esmae Moon….a most amazing time was had we pulled off a Christmas that felt like home and then some in a hotel 3 1/2 hours away from home….I feel like the girls had one of the best 🎁 holidays🎅 yet…good job Mama and Papa Bear 😉🙏👊🎄!

A ridiculously busy week wrapped up in appointments and all the preparation’s of my return home 🙏 next week (can’t wait to be closer to my girls❤️‍🩹🥹), an exploration of🎄lights 🎄and just a couple days ago I had my last chemotherapy session, a 🔔 was wrung and a pendant was received for my strength and bravery………

An Amazing week, and an end to Chemo and only three more doses of Dragons 🐉 ☢️ Fire 🔥 left to endure, then I ring the last 🔔, meaning this particular fight is finally over and I have won the war and done with this fight with this unseeable dragon of a beast…almost done, almost home and I’ve almost won….

And yet still so much more to do, make up for and a beautiful little Tribe to bring back together…. wish me luck, I’ll See you soon Friends…….🥹🐉🤞❤️‍🩹🔥☢️👊

An Aggressive couple weeks slaying the
Big C, swallowing every
Day 🐉Dragons☢️Fire🔥, Exploring a few of the many nooks and crannies of Rochester 😉👊, many a late night wrapping gifts, preparing and cooking up a little🎄feast for a weekend Christmas visit from (Emily)Mama Bear, Sparrow and Mae Mae Moon…… overjoyed with excitement to see Emily & our most amazing girls for an early Christmas 🎄 celebration up here at Mayo ♥️🙏🥹!

And just in time for a visit from the family, It snowed like a winter banshee today so it’s definitely gonna be a white Christmas 🎄 up here at Mayo to boot!

A white X-mas and a weekend with my best friend 💫 and our not so little Girls…..I’ll take it !

So here we are long time no see and we’re still here & fighting up here at Mayo Clinic friends……on the shiny side my hair and beard is growing back, and I’m starting to feel like me again when I look in the mirror 😉👊!

I think we all forgot who he was for a while……… including me, because it’s easy to get lost in what this is……that Big C !

It’s easy to forget who we are when going through the trauma of an eviction, a terminal cancer diagnosis and then being homeless for a few months in a camper down by the river……
All within what seemed like
a few months 😵‍💫🥹😢!

Nothing is as it should be or as I thought it would be and everything I love and hold dear is 4 hours away while we fight the battle of a lifetime………. But we’re doing well today friends and STILL FIGHTING STRONG!

Although at times it feels like we’re fighting this Dragon of a beast with a Spork. 😉👊 we are most definitely winning and in 3 1/2 weeks or so we get to ring this magical bell (we’ll share more on that later😉) that says it’s all over and We’ve WON……. And I get to come home wherever that may be, and be with our ♥️ Sparrowhawk & Mae Mae Yeah Moon♥️…… and you better believe it when I say I can’t wait to go home friends!

And here’s a little shout out to my best friend……. You know who you are!
All this humbled Man wants for Christmas is a day or 2 with you without all of this and what it was in between us, just a day spent Embracing Life and all of the amazing and beautiful things that come with a LIFE well spent!

I’m Sorry I got lost for a while But I’m still fighting and I’m still here my most amazing ♥️best friend♥️ miss you !

Try to Remember what I’ve always said and to this day, I maintain…… anything said or done in trauma, fear and anger matters not…… and we should never be held accountable for these things…… A rule I will follow till my very end !

I love you more than you could ever imagine best friend! I don’t always understand you,
but I love you beyond words
nonetheless 😉♥️👊! We created such a beautiful things together!

So here we are unapologetically (for now😉) to share some of this adventure and journey up at Mayo Clinic thus far……….. I’ll get back at ya before I leave and share more but I’ll see you soon friends when and I can come home to be me or whoever this new humbled man is once again!

Is it ThuRsDaY?! 🤪 !?…With moving day just around the corner, the girls starting school, the vineyard calling our name and dough mixing demanding my attention… days have begun to melt together and sleep a missed friend.

In the wake of our exhaustion the ☀️ has begun to shine on us. With the help of our friends and community we have found ourselves a home that promises the flexibility we require in these difficult times as well as the promise of adventure! Some may think we are crazy and still others will think our path is brilliant…I have come to believe we may be a touch of both 😅 🤷
…either way we will be calling this beautiful All Weather DENALI home for the next few years as we continue our search for the few acres we can call home 💗 🙏. In the meantime we will continue to tend to the grapes, plant the garlic, mix the dough, love each other and keep riding this crazy wave of LIFE. (A HUGE shout out and THANKS to the incredible people that have donated funding to continue IV therapy for Christopher, to help secure our home and to those who have given us your time to help in this move, we thank you ☺️)
