Today we spent our morning back at Dubuque Regional Humane Society volunteering with the cats! We were able to successfully clip nails on 61 kitties within a two hour span. ☺️

There are some excellent kitties waiting for forever homes at the shelter! Don’t forget to check them out if you’re in need of a new furry friend 🫶🏻

Bugatti encompasses how we all feel when you get your dog freshly groomed in January and then the weather has the audacity to get oddly warm.. and now it’s a brief mud season. 😫😝

We are happy to clean up those muddy pups, but can’t guarantee they won’t need it again within 24 hours! 🤪

Why small grooming salons might have higher prices than corporate places:

1) Overhead cost. Typically speaking, a small salon has a significantly higher overhead cost due to smaller customer volume, higher quality products, and higher employee pay due to lower (if any) additional staffing beyond the salon owner. Having a decent shop location also usually means high rent costs. We are also typically paying thousands in card processing fees every year (remember that cash is always king for small businesses!) and all of this comes out of one average person’s pocket (in most cases), not out of a corporate franchise’s pockets.

2) No supplemental income beyond grooming. In many cases, a small grooming salon is just that - they just do grooming. Occasionally, you may see a small amount of retail along with it, but it is nothing compared to the high amount of retail and additional services a corporate place is offering alongside grooming (think Petco, Pet Supplies Plus, etc). Small salons’ income is often 100% grooming, if not close to it.

3) More personalized environment. Small salons are often one-on-one or close to it. We often do not overlap appointments. This provides a calm environment where the focus is all on your pet during their appointment! This also gives us time to properly clean and sanitize between each pet. But this also means we cannot do as many pets in one day as corporate can.

When choosing a grooming salon, these are just things to keep in mind! There are many talented groomers both in small salons and in corporate ones. You just might notice a price difference between the two, and we (as a small, locally owned salon) wanted to shed some light on the subject! 🩷

People greatly underestimate the power of connection. Being on the same page as your dog, really seeing each other and listening. One of the biggest core issues we see with some cases is just a total lack of connection and therefore a struggling relationship. And without connection, communication is difficult! Without communication, it’s awfully hard to teach a dog, or for a dog to tell you the “why’s” of their behaviors.

Remember that a relationship with a dog is NOT a one-way street! Both ends of the leash need to learn to listen and to be heard.

Always train with compassionate and an open mind. 🖤

We had the absolute pleasure of donating a groom to Dubuque Regional Humane Society resident, Houston, today!

Houston came in as a stray with lots of impacted undercoat and a super matted tail. It took a few hours with some extra hands on deck, but we were able to get him cleaned up before his meet-and-greet this afternoon. Happy to report he went to his new home after this! 🖤
