Happy 2 year work anniversary to our certified veterinary technician Josie !

Josie graduated from North Dakota State University for her undergraduate degree in veterinary technology. She did her internship at our veterinary clinic and we were happy to hire her once she graduated school!

Josie is a dedicated employee and very reliable! She is extremely knowledgeable and a fast learner and very calm and caring and compassionate. You can always find her snuggling an animal in the treatment room it seems and she has an equal passion for dogs and cats ❤️

Josie's favorite part about being a technician is performing dental cleanings with the veterinarian ! She finds chipping tartar off of teeth very rewarding and loves to hear how the pets feel better at their recheck appointments!

We are so happy that Josie is a part of our team! Thank you so much for all you do!!

We had a busy week this last week and even did a blood transfusion! Baloo (Dr. Dank’s dog) was happy to be the blood donor and got a special bag of treats for his donation! Lewis was very happy to receive some extra blood since his body was destroying his blood cells. It was a whole team effort and Dr. Schuder even helped collect the blood! During a transfusion animals can sometimes have allergic reactions to the blood so we monitored Lewis carefully (Kayla and Helena were very diligent with his monitoring!) and Lewis did great!

Happy 4 year work anniversary to our veterinary assistant Maggie! You will often be greeted by Maggie as you enter the clinic with your pet . She assists the doctors and technicians as well thru out the day with various procedures.

Maggie is commonly up front as a receptionist so please tell her happy anniversary if you see her! She has a knack for staying calm in stressful situations and is one of the most patient and kind people you can meet. She is a very reliable employee and is excellent at jumping from receptionist to assistant to help anywhere it is needed! She has taken all of the low stress handling courses and really taken them to heart. Her skills as an assistant have grown SO MUCH in the last few years and we are so proud of how much she has learned and grown!

Maggie is taking online classes through Pen Foster to be a veterinary technician ! Her favorite part of working at DVH is that every day is different and you never know what kind of case we will see !

Maggie has whole menagerie of pets at home!
Dog, cat, mice, rabbits, guinea pigs and turtles !
She does amazing work with rescue and rehabbing little critters!

Thank you for all you do Maggie!

Ever wonder what urinary crystals look like? There are different types of crystals that can form in animal’s urine and the coffin lid shaped ones pictured are called struvite. In dogs, these usually form secondary to a urinary tract infection, which poor Billy Blue has. She was crying and uncomfortable as these hurt to p*e out! We got her started on nsaids for pain and inflammation and started antibiotics now at least!

ZZ has some fancy teeth after getting special metal crowns placed! ZZ had all of his teeth affected with a condition called enamel hypoplasia, where the enamel on the teeth doesn’t form right. There were exposed areas of teeth that were at risk for infection without the protective covering of enamel. His teeth were treated by our very own local board certified dentist .animaldentist (Lake County Veterinary Clinics) and he is doing great! We are so happy that his teeth could get this protective treatment!

This is important information to help understand dog behavior!

TRIGGER STACKING – WHEN BEHAVIOUR HAPPENS “OUT OF THE BLUE”

We’ve all had those days when nothing seems to go right and one frustrating thing after another happens to us, leaving us feeling wound up, stressed and ready to explode at the next unsuspecting person who dares to ask us something.

This “unsuspecting” person may think we have a serious behaviour problem or need anger management therapy, when the truth is that we’ve just had a really bad day or even a few bad days and don’t usually behave like this at all.

Dogs are no different and a behaviour that seems completely out of character or happens “out of the blue” is often caused by “trigger stacking”.

A trigger may be anything that increases a dog’s stress levels and has a negative impact on their emotional, mental or physical state.

These may be small things that we may not even notice or seem insignificant to us, but they are all adding to an increasing “stack” of events that may culminate in out of character behaviour.

When stress levels reach a certain point, the next stressful event, however small, may cause an explosive reaction that is completely unexpected.

Instead of just focusing on a particular behaviour and seeing it as a problem that needs to be prevented, take a step backwards, look at the bigger picture, look at events, circumstances or environmental factors that may have played a role leading up to that behaviour.

Being aware of potential stressors and allowing your dog time to decompress, relax and unwind for a few days will often mean the difference between “normal behaviour” and a behaviour that seems completely out of character.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Scott Beeman as another owner of Duluth Veterinary Hospital!!

Dr. Scott Beeman grew up in West Des Moines, IA. He graduated from Dordt College with a B.A. in Business Administration. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2010 and spent the first decade of his career practicing in Adel, IA before joining Duluth Veterinary Hospital in February 2021. Dr. Beeman’s professional interests include acupuncture, pain management, internal medicine, and surgery, and he is dedicated to serving the human-animal bond. He is a certified veterinary medical acupuncturist and has training in medical massage. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, hiking, camping, and playing music on a variety of instruments.

Dr. Beeman has been a doctor here at DVH for four years and has been an absolutely wonderful addition to our team! He is always so kind and thoughtful and calm but also knows how to crack a good joke and keep us all laughing!

We are so happy that he decided to move to the Duluth area four years ago and join our team and we are so excited for him to now be an owner too!
