LET'S TRY TO AVOID THE EMERGENCY CLINIC!
Did you know that stress can wreak havoc on our cat's bodies? Stress (caused by other cats, dogs, people in the home-visitors in town for the holidays) can cause bladder inflammation without any bacteria present. This bladder inflammation is the most common cause of debris in the bladder that leads to a blocked cat! A Urinary Obstruction (not being able to urinate) is not compatible with life. This is a medical emergency, meaning you must seek medical attention right away! Some clinical signs include: Repeatedly visiting the litterbox / straining, frequent squatting, posturing like they need to urinate or defecate (if you think your cat is constipated, he might just have a urinary obstruction), urinating small amounts of urine or bloody urine, growling, vocalizing, sudden development of aggressive behavior.
PREVENTION: Evaluate your cat's environment for areas that potentially cause stress. (Cats/Dogs your cat is not used to, inability to get away from high traffic areas, extra visitors in the home, changes in your normal routine) Make sure your cat has places to relax, alone and away from the chaos of the holidays, ample resources-food, water, litterboxes in multiple rooms, toys, catio, Feliway diffusers and possibly medications to help alleviate stress. Please let us know if you have any questions!
