I have never met a horse more in tune with her body’s needs than Fiona. It can be kind of frustrating some times because it means she tends to be on the higher maintenance side with bodywork and proper saddle fit is make or break for her. But it also means she is fascinating to play around with bodywork exercises with. She gives the absolute BEST releases

Far too many regard “ good horse training” as the ability to achieve obedience at any cost.

Many people don’t factor in whether or not the trainer is actually being considerate of the feelings of the horse and training in an ethical manner.

Being a good horse trainer should involve considering the unique needs of horses as a species and training in accordance with those needs.

Being able to train horses to stand for hours a day without any hay doesn’t make someone a good trainer, they are setting horses up to be ulcerated and uncomfortable in the stomach due to going without forage for hours at a time

Similarly, being able to train young horses to do incredible athletic feats very quickly doesn’t make someone a better horse trainer, because they aren’t factoring in the wear and tear it takes on the body for a horse to be brought along so quickly.

While these things may make things easier and more profitable for humans, they don’t factor in whether or not it is fair to the Horse.

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

Horses are living beings, and if we are going to partake in a sport where we have to operate alongside another living being, we need to consider how our actions make them feel.

For anyone who doesn’t wanna have to consider how their training methods impact the Horse: consider getting a dirtbike or joining another sport where you are working as an individual.

It isn’t good training to seek results at any cost, and to expect obedience to the point where the horse has to pretend to not be impacted by having a lack of met needs.

Far too much of what many regard as “good “training results in a shut down Horse.

What is the point in being involved in a sport where we are supposed to be enjoying the time we share with horses if we don’t actually want them to behave like horses?

If someone is just looking to work with obedient little robots, do they even like horses?

And this isn’t to say that you can’t create obedience ethically, but the extent of obedience that some expect is reliance on a lack of personality and the horse succumb to unfair working conditions.

The fact of the matter is this: truly good horse training needs to involve actually being good to the horse. Not just what we are able to make the horse do for people.

“PQF LUNAS LEGACY” 2013 APHA mare, about 14.3h

Looking for that awesome all-arounder? Have a rider that is ready to move off their babysitter? Meet Tango! This mare is a little bit of been there done that and has dabbled in several areas. Previously she was used for some western pleasure/showmanship and was briefly started on some cow work. Current owners have shown Training Level dressage and jumping up to 2’6”. Plus Tango loves to trail ride! Best suited for an intermediate rider, as she’s responsive to the aids and tends to be a little more forward thinking. Tango neck reins as well as direct. She can sit and pulls back into work easily. Easy keeper, no special needs or maintenance. Barefoot. Lives outside 24/7 but loves her stall time if she gets it. Tango is great for all her handling, including vet, farrier, trailering and tying. UTD on everything. This mare is truly a gem and a great teacher! Owners will be sad to see her go, but have too many horses to ride and Tango is too nice to go without a job.

I’ll admit I’ve spent very little time with this guy on his training. Poor excuses but life has been busy. We’ve done minimal leading and only in the barn. Yesterday was too nice so we went for a walk down the driveway. Literally his first time ever being out and away from everyone. As you can see he was concerned 😆

When pastures turn to ice, we get arena play time. I honestly didn’t think old man could kick it up like that anymore 🤣 #prayingforawinterstorm

Excited for all the new things 2025 will bring, especially getting these lovely freeloaders back on the schedule for the first time in many years. Happy New Year! 🎊🎆

Tilly thinks she is the luckiest dog in the world because we built a huge sandbox just for her 🤣

I’ll be boosting this girl’s ad one last time this winter. I’m still hoping to find her perfect match but if not, she’ll be sticking around for a while and continuing in her career. I have no doubt she’ll be going out First Level next summer once I commit the winter to her again. She’s such a great mare and easy to have around. I’m getting less and less inclined to move her because she’s a great lesson horse and fun enough that I personally enjoy working with her. But with my new facility, I no longer have an excuse to not work some of my personal horses who have been sitting for far too long. If you are looking for a fun, laid back dressage/hunter/jumper/trail/all around young horse, shoot me a message and we can talk about Fiona!
