Dental care plays a vital role in the health of our furry friends, and is often overlooked. Many of the patients we see on a daily basis, often present to us with oral related health problems. Whether it be: gingivitis, tooth root abscesses, bad breath, broken teeth, or increased salivation.
What are some things that can be done to improve dental health in our pets?
1. Routine annual exams: Not only do we look at your pets ears, eyes, and nose, but we also examine their mouth!
2. Routine dental cleanings under anesthesia (see below for more details).
3. Proper at home care-brushing teeth, water additives, dental chews, and they also make prescription dental food!
What happens during a dental cleaning?
Dental cleanings are very beneficial to our pets. They consist of: being placed under anesthesia, charting the teeth, taking full mouth dental radiographs, scaling the teeth with an ultrasonic scaler, and polishing. If any dental extractions are needed, then these are done after the cleaning.
Proper dental health can make our pets live much longer and improve their quality of life!
