Lakeshore Humane Society, Inc 431 East Chestnut Street
Dunkirk, NY 14048
716-672-1991 Many aspects of our organization have changed over the years, but our goal has stayed the same.

The Lakeshore Humane Society is a non-profit, all volunteer organization, dedicated to helping protect the welfare of all animals and providing humane education to our community. The organization was established in 1980 under the name of The Dunkirk Humane Society, later renamed as we expanded our area of service to include the entire north end of Chautauqua County. We strive to get funding throug

h donations and grants to support our spay/neuter assistance program and to help us pay for operating costs, primarily veterinary bills. As always, we are very thankful to our generous sponsors who enable us to continue our work in the community. All money raised or donated stays in our community and helps animals in need. Animals in the care of The Lakeshore Humane Society are housed at our adoption center at 431 East Chestnut Street in Dunkirk. Space restricts the number of animals in our care at any given time it does enables us to get to know each animal better, leading to more successful pairings with new owners. All animals leaving our care must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption and owners are required to sign an adoption contract detailing our standards of care for their new pet. Animals that are deemed too young to be altered are provided with a voucher that covers the cost of surgery. A reasonable donation is required at the time of adoption. Anyone interested in bettering the welfare of animals is welcome to join our organization. There are many ways you can help the animals and us. We meet the third Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in our adoption center located at 431 E. Chestnut Street, Dunkirk, NY. Our phone number is: 716-672-1991. Our mail address is 431 E. Chestnut Street, Dunkirk, NY 14048 or you can contact us though this site. We hope to see you soon! The Adoption Center hours are by adoption appointment only. We are going to have many adoption days throughout the year when we will be open on different Saturdays for people to come , look, meet and adopt their four-legged family member. Also, we will be holding fundraisers at the center so that you may visit the animals and adopt then, too.

Say hello to Clover. Clover is a 3 year old light brown female tabby. Clover has been in a shelter much of her life but has really come a long way! She still won't allow you to pick her up or sit in your lap but she's become very friendly and affectionate and really looks forward to visits and human companionship. She's lived with Matilda for much of her life and there is a two for one special going on now for the month of September 2025. She would be fine in a multi cat home! Although quite friendly she can get aggravated so small children are not recommended. If you are interested in giving Clover or Matilda the lives they deserve, please fill out our online application or stop in during open hours Wednesday 6-8pm or Saturday from 12-3pm.

Matilda is a 3 year old brown female tabby. She has been in a shelter most of her life. She is quite shy and keeps to herself most of the time. Matilda tolerates other cats well and has lived with several during her stay here so a multi cat household would be fine for her. She has lived with Clover for a very long time and there is a 2 for one special going on for the month of September 2025, so that would be an option for you! She’s not very affectionate and honestly could really care less about human contact and companionship, but she still deserves a loving home like any other cat. She would need a special adopter who can accept her as who she is and not care if she can provide affection or play or not. Many cats do much better in a home than they do in a shelter so there is a chance Matilda could open up and come out of her shell in a loving home. Small children are not recommended as she can get aggravated easily. Won’t you consider opening your home to this special kitty? If you are interested in giving Matilda the life she deserves, please fill out our online application or stop in during open hours Wednesday 6-8pm or Saturday from 12-3pm.

ADOPTION PENDING!!

Meet Ozzy! Ozzy is a handsome, friendly boy who came to us as an unclaimed stray. He is approximately 3 to 4 yrs old and is a purebred Rottweiler. Ozzy is big & strong, weighing 101lbs. He does walk fairly well on a leash, but will need to continue working on those skills. He will tend to pull if he sees something he’s interested in. Ozzy’s new owner will need to be fit and active enough to handle him. Ozzy may enjoy another dog in the house, of course, a meet and greet is required first. We are unsure about cats and suggesting older children only due to Ozzy’s size.
Despite his intimidating presence,
Ozzy is a gentle giant who loves attention and giving kisses . If you would like to give Ozzy the life he deserves, please fill out our online application or stop in during open hours. Wednesday 6-8pm or Saturday 12-3p.

The Lakeshore Humane Society recently received generous donations from the family and friends of Michael P. Myers of Buffalo, NY. Mike was the father of one of our volunteers, Lisa Newell, and he passed away unexpectedly in July. Mike’s family encouraged that donations be made to LHS in his name to honor his memory, as he was an animal lover and loved that his daughter volunteered at an animal shelter. In addition, on August 21, 2025, Mike’s brother-in-law Lou Mustillo guest-bartended at O’Daniel’s Bar in Buffalo, NY, and donated all of the tips collected, totaling over $2600. Many other friends and family have sent in donations in Mike’s honor, with donations still coming in. We are so grateful that Mike’s family decided that LHS was a worthy cause and we gratefully accept the donations in Mike’s memory.
