The Lakeshore Humane Society is a non-profit, all volunteer organization, dedicated to helping protect the welfare of all animals and providing humane education to our community. The organization was established in 1980 under the name of The Dunkirk Humane Society, later renamed as we expanded our area of service to include the entire north end of Chautauqua County. We strive to get funding throug

h donations and grants to support our spay/neuter assistance program and to help us pay for operating costs, primarily veterinary bills. As always, we are very thankful to our generous sponsors who enable us to continue our work in the community. All money raised or donated stays in our community and helps animals in need. Animals in the care of The Lakeshore Humane Society are housed at our adoption center at 431 East Chestnut Street in Dunkirk. Space restricts the number of animals in our care at any given time it does enables us to get to know each animal better, leading to more successful pairings with new owners. All animals leaving our care must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption and owners are required to sign an adoption contract detailing our standards of care for their new pet. Animals that are deemed too young to be altered are provided with a voucher that covers the cost of surgery. A reasonable donation is required at the time of adoption. Anyone interested in bettering the welfare of animals is welcome to join our organization. There are many ways you can help the animals and us. We meet the third Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in our adoption center located at 431 E. Chestnut Street, Dunkirk, NY. Our phone number is: 716-672-1991. Our mail address is 431 E. We are going to have many adoption days throughout the year when we will be open on different Saturdays for people to come , look, meet and adopt their four-legged family member. Meet Astra! Astra is an incredibly sweet, Lab mix who is 3 yrs old. She is a little shy at first but does warm up quickly. Astra is well behaved and knows several commands. She is both housebroken and crate trained. Astra has lived with another dog and cats in her previous home. Astrid needs an active owner as she is an energetic girl. She would love a big yard to run & play in. She walks well on a leash and enjoys going for walks. Say hello to Eveyln! Eveyln is a 10 month old female grey tabby who is EXTREMELY shy and timid. Eveyln is a very calm girl and will not scratch or bite at all and will reluctantly submit to soft gentle touches and pets. Evelyn does live with other younger cats here and tolerates them well. Favorite pastime is hiding and avoiding human contact. A special adopter with a lot of patience and experience with cats would be required for Evelyn to help her grow and come out of her shell. This is Malachite. Malachite, is a beautiful 10 year old grey tabby. He’s very friendly and loves belly rubs and weighs in at a whopping 17 pounds! He does like sitting in your lap and he loves visits and human interaction.
There is a discount for a senior cat. Malachite’s adoption fee is $30. Malachite has a history of bladder issues and needs to remain on a special food. Won’t you consider giving this senior a loving home for his golden years? Say hello to Cheyenne! Cheyenne is a 10 month old female tabby mix who is EXTREMELY shy and timid. I’ve honestly never seen one as shy as Cheyenne. Cheyenne is a very calm girl and will not scratch or bite at all and will submit to soft gentle touches and pets. Cheyenne does live with other younger cats here and tolerates them well. Timber is a sweet, but shy young man about 2 years old. Timber has always been quite shy and reserved but has been warming up a little more in the past couple of months. Timber lives with other cats at the shelter and tolerates them well, so possibly one or two other non-dominant cats would be OK, but he would also do great as your one and only boy! Potential adopter needs to understand his shyness and must be patient and be able to work with Timber at his own pace as he comes out of his shell. Cuteness overload…the ears, the face,the fluffiness. World meet Quincy, weighing in currently at 36 pounds at 5 months old, he is German Shepherd mix and a whole bundle of love. Quincy is incredibly smart, affectionate and eager to please. He will need a family with shepherd/herding breed experience that understands what he needs to be the best pup he can be. As expected with shepherds, he is nervous about some new things but warms up incredibly quick. He will need an owner that is willing to work with him on training and realizes he will need a lot of activity to keep him occupied. This pretty girl is named Lilo. Lilo is a shepherd/lab mix who is approximately 8 months old. Lilo is a fun, energetic girl. She is going to need plenty of exercise to keep her happy and healthy. Lilo will need an active owner that can keep up with her. She loves everyone that she meets and likes to give lots of kisses. Lilo does need to work on basic commands and leash walking. She’s a strong girl and does pull right now so her new owner will need to be able to handle her. Lilo is treat motivated, so she should catch on quick. Lilo does well with other dogs and has been enjoying the LHS yard while playing with the other dogs here. Lilo unfortunately is not fond of cats! Lilo is also good with kids but she may accidentally knock little ones down. If you would like to meet Lilo, please stop in during open hours, Wednesdays 6-8pm or Saturdays 12-3pm. She’s pretty, she’s loveable and she’s ready to meet her furever family. Meet Valerie. Valerie and her sister-friend Charlotte were found wandering this past fall and have been with the local DCO til recently when they came to us. Valerie is around 3 years old and weighs between 50-55 pounds. Valerie is a fun loving, snuggly girl, typical of a house hippo. She is incredibly sweet and smart and when the mood suits her, sounds as if she’s purring. While we are willing to adopt them separately to be the queens of their own home, Valerie and Charlotte are very fond of each other and if someone if willing to adopt them both, a discount would be given. Meet Charlotte! This stunning beaut is about as sweet and amazing as they come. Charlotte and her sister (maybe?) Valerie were found wandering together this past fall and were at the local DCO until recently. Charlotte is around two years old and weighs between 70-75 pounds. She does currently have an eye condition that is going to be corrected with surgery but she may need long term eye drops. Charlotte is super smart and loving with a fantastic disposition. Charlotte is a girl who’s up for anything, snuggles-YES, a nice walk-YEPPER, some fun zooming time-SURE THING. While we are willing to adopt them separately to be the queens of their own home, Charlotte and Valerie are very fond of each other and if someone if willing to adopt them both, a discount would be given.
