It has been over a year since Bonnie came into our rescue and joined Sandy at the kennel. Being an “honorary hound” she hasn’t received much if any interest from adopters in all of that time. But a month ago, she got a wonderful opportunity to go into a temp foster home and we were able to learn more about what kind of “furever” would suit her best. Here are some notes from her foster family…

🐾”Bonnie has been with us for one month now. Since she has been with us, she has done well with settling into me and my wife's routine as well as our two hounds' routine. She loves attention and scratches. She may occasionally "nose" at your hand or arm to pet her, but she's not pushy about it. She loves her food/treats but she isn't pushy about that. She does like to "guard" (pretty much lay next to) the big food container for our dogs. She has 'growled' a little bit but I think it's been a spot that she has 'claimed' in the house. She recently has been still laying there but she's been less "growly" with our dogs about it. She's also been a good "alert dog" both inside and outside the house. She knows when I'm home before I come inside and will start barking when she hears my truck. She's also been great at helping our hounds keep the groundhogs and squirrels out of our yard. Haha. She does prefer to sleep by herself. We do not crate our dogs as they have a doggy window and have 24 hour access in and out of the house. She picked it up very quickly and uses it fine when we are at work. She does prefer to just go in and out through the door if we're home. She did have one accident but I think that was her second day with us. She is a big cuddler. We think she's about 90ish pound but she isn't "fat". My wife and I refer to her as the "chubby girl" (only because she's bigger than our hounds. haha.) She's not a bull in a china shop so we think she'd be good around kids. But we don't have any kids so we're not sure. We're waiting on a DNA test but she definitely has German Shepherd in her. We think she'd be good as an only dog or with other dogs IF she has proper introductions first. She is fantastic and we hope and pray that she gets an amazing furrrrrever home!”🐾

While we don’t know Bonnie’s exact age, she’s definitely an older girl who loves attention from her people the most. We feel she would do best in a somewhat calm home setting where she can relax on the sofa and get lots of loving 💕

Bonnie is being temporarily fostered in MD and will have to head back to our WV rescue kennel if nothing comes through for her soon. She is fully vetted and a meet and greet can definitely be arranged. For more information or to request an application for this very special girl please EMAIL us at [email protected]

And please give her a share in hopes that her perfect someone finally finds her ❤️

I can't take him to the beach for a walk because it annoys you and disturbs the vacation... I have no right to rent a house if I have a dog, nor can I take him on public transportation.
However, I can take it to the rubble to find you after an earthquake, in the woods after you got lost in the mountains and had no map or gps; under the snow because you took a detour forbidden off the track; in the water because despite the red flag you have entered the sea, and your life is in danger!
And finally ...
He is just a dog, but he or she will find you. And it will save you!!!

When you foster a dog, you give them the stability, care, and love that they need until they find their forever home. But in Sansa’s case it turns out she was home all along ☺️❤️

Because of Michelle & Kevin’s foster offer, we were able to commit to helping Sansa back in April. She joined them and their bloodhounds Boh & AMMAR alumni Daisy and her new journey began…

Sansa was extremely sweet, but afraid of many new things, like various objects and doorways. But with time and patience, she started to gain her confidence and flourished with them. Sadly, Daisy passed away over the summer, taking a big piece of their hearts with her 😞 But Sansa’s quirky and loving personality helped to heal their hearts and they just knew that she was meant to be with them forever ❤️

She will be staying in MD, enjoying her walks and trips to Starbucks for her pup cups, and of course napping on the sofa and stealing socks lol. So many dogs don’t ever get a second chance and never find their happy ending. But Sansa is one of the lucky ones who not only received the gift of a loving foster home, but that home also turned out to be her PERFECT happy ever after 💕

Sansa we know that you will have an amazing life…One full of new fun adventures, lots of snuggles, and SO much love. Welcome Home sweet girl!! 💕🐾💕

BIG news here at AMMAR!! 🎉

Yesterday AMMAR alumni Copper Girl joined the VA Department of Corrections training academy! Due to security protocols in place, we could only share a cropped image to prevent identification but we know she’s going to do great! Started in man-trailing with Sandy at our rescue kennel, Copper now has her chance to really shine and we are SO happy for her to get this opportunity!

Please join us in wishing her much luck and success…Go get ‘em girlfriend!! ❤️🐾

There's something I need to talk about, and I'm going to try to address it as sensitively as I can.
Our sanctuary was established as a safe haven for senior dogs who have found themselves in unavoidable situations, facing health crisis or homelessness in their twilight years. We have taken in dogs from shelters, strays, owners who are unable to care for them due to their own health, or sadly at the time of their own death.
Owners who would absolutely do anything to change the circumstances so they could keep their dog, but are in unavoidable turmoil and situations outside of their control and the choice has been taken from them.
We have provided sanctuary to dogs who need us, because they have nowhere else to go.

Recently, there has been an uptick in owner requests from people who are missing the point of what we do. We have had requests to surrender nine dogs in the last forty-eight hours. If you have a dog, that you have loved and cared for their entire life, and now just can't bring yourself to handle the inconveniences that come with your dog being a senior...we are not the answer. I don't know how people can forget the faithfulness their dog has provided its entire life, and as their body starts to fail and they need their people the most, they would choose to simply surrender their dog instead of supporting them to the end.

As dogs age, as with any living being, their body starts to deteriorate. Organ function, potty function, vision, hearing, mobility...every life has an expiration date, and as they draw nearer to the end, things just don't work like they used to. At absolutely no fault of their own, you have to consider how the dog is feeling after years of "doing the right thing", that first time they don't make it to the door to potty. Will your dog's "accident" be met with kindness and understanding at that time? Or will you be so tremendously inconvenienced that you decide your dog can't live with you anymore?

I don't think people realize what a dog goes through when they are rehomed after years and years with their family. I can tell you that I have cried, many times, for a dog who sits at the window watching for their family and wondering what they've done wrong to make them lose their home. They do not understand. In their deepest time of need, they just want the same support that they've given their humans all these years.

Another misconception that people have, is that we can do anything differently than they are already doing in their power, to provide anything other than a dignified end when it's time. We get messages, "I have a 15 year old dog who is blind and deaf, he has trouble walking and isn't eating well, and can't control his bowels." There comes a time where people think there's something we can do, and time isn't anything I can battle and win. The kindest and most merciful thing anyone can do for their dog is consider their quality of life and be right by their side when you offer that final gift of mercy. It's very difficult to manage these situations where I feel confident a dog might need to meet Jesus instead of me.

More people need to stay committed to their senior pets, I really don't know how else to say it. Offloading the inconvenience of an old dog is not the answer. People just need to do better. Love your old dogs until the end. They need you.

Reese 🌼 Available now for adoption! 🐾

On this first day of Fall, 🍁 who’s ready to fall in love with this beautiful girl? 💕 She checks so many wonderful boxes…Good with other dogs, kids, cats, loves car rides and is both house and crate trained, Now all she needs is her special someone to check HER one and only box which is to find her furever home! 🐾

Reese is 11 months old and a smaller girl at around 45lbs. She came from a hoarding/neglect situation where she was crated 24/7, but she is now thriving with her foster Cathe who got her out of that situation and has shown her SO many new and wonderful things! Her previous owner said she was a hound/lab but we really don’t know her exact mix. Her beautiful coloring is what got her her new name…Just like a Reese’s peanut butter cup ☺️ She is a total sweetheart, and would love a home with another playful dog to romp with along with some hooman kids to grow up and be best friends with ❤️

Reese is now fully vetted and ready to find her perfect someone ☺️ She is being fostered in Deale MD but transport assistance is available to the right home. For more information about this VERY sweet girl or to request an application please message this page or email us at [email protected]! 🐾
