🦃 Thanksgiving Pet Safety Tips 🦃

As we prepare to enjoy all the delicious Thanksgiving dishes, let’s make sure our furry friends stay safe too! Here are some common holiday foods that can be dangerous to dogs, cats, and other animals:

Foods to Avoid:

Turkey bones & skin: Cooked bones can splinter, and rich, fatty skin can upset their stomachs.

Onions, garlic, and chives: Toxic to both cats and dogs, even in small amounts.

Grapes & raisins: These can cause kidney failure in dogs and cats.

Chocolate & sweets with xylitol: Both are highly toxic and can lead to serious health issues.

Alcohol & caffeine: Can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and worse.

Rich or seasoned foods: Avoid feeding pets any stuffing, gravy, buttered sides, or desserts that may contain spices and fats.

Safe Treats to Share:

A small piece of plain, cooked turkey (without skin or bones)

A bit of plain, steamed veggies like carrots or green beans

Pumpkin purée (no spices or sugar added)

Enjoy your Thanksgiving meal, and keep your pets safe and healthy by sticking to these pet-friendly options! 🐾 Have a safe and happy holiday from Bits 2 Leashes!

Halloween Safety Reminder for Dog Owners 🎃🐶

Halloween can be especially tricky for pet safety. Along with the usual toxins, Halloween brings added risks:

Candy Wrappers: Curious noses can lead dogs to ingest wrappers, which can cause blockages and digestive issues.

Glow Sticks & Glow-in-the-Dark Items: 🐕🐾🐈🐩🐶 Although not toxic, the liquid inside can cause drooling and discomfort if bitten open.

Costumes: If you’re dressing up your dog, make sure they’re comfortable and the costume doesn’t restrict movement or breathing. Avoid small parts that could be chewed off and swallowed.

Keep treats and candy bowls well out of reach and make sure your dog has a calm space to retreat to if all the Halloween excitement becomes too much.

Let’s keep the season bright, fun, and safe for our pets! 🧡

Hurricane Preparedness for All Pets: Dogs, Cats, Horses & More

With hurricane season upon us, it's crucial to have a plan for your animals. Here’s how to make sure they’re safe and cared for if the storm hits:

Essentials to Stock Up On:

Water: At least a week's supply for each pet. Horses and livestock may need 12–20 gallons per day.

Food: Non-perishable food for at least 7 days. Don’t forget food for livestock and horses.

Medications: Keep a 2-week supply of any prescription medications your pets or animals may need.

First Aid Kit: Include gauze, antiseptics, tweezers, and any species-specific needs.

ID and Records: Ensure pets have collars with updated tags. Keep copies of their vet records and proof of ownership in a waterproof bag.

Litter & Bedding: Stock up on litter for cats and extra bedding for small animals.

Leashes, Halters, and Carriers: Make sure you have sturdy equipment for quick evacuations.

Comfort Items: Bring familiar toys, blankets, or bedding to help reduce anxiety.

Additional Steps for Horses & Livestock:

Shelter: Ensure your barn is secure or have a safe open area for livestock if evacuation is necessary.

Feed & Hay: Store in waterproof containers.

ID: Consider ID tags or paint your phone number on their hooves in case they get loose.

Power Outage Preparedness:

Have flashlights, batteries, and solar chargers on hand.

Consider a generator, especially for farms with larger animals.

Store water in clean, sealed containers and prepare backup feeding methods for when the power is out.

Stay safe and ensure your pets are part of your emergency plan! 🌩

**Hurricane Awareness for Pet and Horse Owners**

As hurricane season approaches, it's crucial to ensure the safety of our beloved pets and horses. Here are some essential tips to prepare:

Pets:
1. **Emergency Kit**: Assemble a pet emergency kit including food, water, medications, a leash, carrier, and recent photos.
2. **Identification**: Make sure pets have up-to-date ID tags and are microchipped.
3. **Safe Space**: Identify a safe room in your home where pets can stay during the storm.
4. **Evacuation Plan**: Know the pet-friendly shelters or hotels in your area and keep their contact information handy.

Horses:
1. **Identification**: Ensure horses are easily identifiable with microchips, tags, or permanent markers with your contact details.
2. **Evacuation Plan**: Have a plan to transport horses to a safe location if necessary. Make arrangements with nearby stables or farms.
3. **Shelter**: If evacuation isn't possible, ensure your barn is secure and stocked with enough feed and water for several days.

07/18/2024

•Heat Stroke in Dogs: Why You Should Never Leave Your Pet in the CarUnderstanding the Danger:Rapid Temperature Rise: On a mild 75°F day, the temperature inside a parked car can reach 100°F in just 10 minutes and soar to 120°F in 30 minutes.

•Inadequate Cooling Mechanism: Dogs cool themselves primarily through panting. In a hot, enclosed car, panting isn’t enough to regulate their body temperature.

•Symptoms of Heat Stroke in Dogs:Excessive Panting and Drooling: Early signs that your dog is struggling to cool down.Lethargy and Weakness: Your pet may seem unusually tired or weak.
Vomiting and Diarrhea: Signs of severe distress and overheating.Collapse or Seizures: In extreme cases, heat stroke can lead to collapse or seizures, which can be fatal without immediate veterinary attention.

•Preventing Heat Stroke:Never Leave Your Dog in the Car: Even for a quick errand, it’s too risky.
•Provide Plenty of Water: Keep your dog hydrated at all times.

•Seek Shade and Cooler Environments: Walk your dog during cooler parts of the day and provide access to shade and air conditioning.
Know Your Dog’s Limits: Older dogs, puppies, and breeds with short snouts (like Bulldogs and Pugs) are more susceptible to heat stroke.

•What to Do If Your Dog Shows Signs of Heat Stroke:Move to a Cool Area: Immediately get your dog out of the heat and into a cooler environment.Offer Water: Let your dog drink small amounts of cool (not cold) water.Cool Down Gradually: Use cool, wet towels on your dog’s body, particularly the neck, armpits, and between the hind legs. Avoid using ice-cold water, which can cause shock.Seek Veterinary Care: Even if your dog seems better, heat stroke can cause internal damage.
•Always get them checked by a vet.

Remember: A few minutes in a hot car can be life-threatening for your dog. Keep your pets safe and cool this summer
