You may wonder why we pull back into the syringe when giving injections in the vein. This picture explains why. We don't pull back to make sure we're in the vessel, we do it to make sure we're in the RIGHT vessel. Today I went to give an injection and pulled back and saw blood brighter than I wanted. I decided to go and get a new dose of sedation and once again pulled back and then gave my dose of sedation. The syringe on the left was my first injection and the syringe on the right was my second injection. Does anyone know why I shouldn't have injected that first syringe? And had I injected that first injection, what would have happened?

Unlike humans, horses are designed to run on a full stomach. Feeding your horse 2-3L of chaff or a biscuit of hay prior to exercise has two benefits :
1️⃣ The chaff will form a ball of feed in the stomach, which will help prevent acid from splashing up from the lower part of the stomach to cause gastric ulcers.
2️⃣ Blood is normally diverted away from the stomach during exercise, which reduces some of its normal protective mechanisms. Research has shown that feeding your horse before exercise actually reduces the amount of blood that is shunted away from the stomach and also increases the amount of blood delivered to the skeletal muscles and muscles of the chest. So not only are you helping to protect the stomach, you also might be improving your horse’s performance.

We got some rain and wind here but we are all safe 😊🙏🏼

Today is a sad day 💔 One of our senior residents went across the rainbow bridge. 🌈She was an old horse with a young soul. Ms. Tina Sue 💗 she was soo good with the babies and just the sweetest mare. Ive had her here as a boarder for so long she felt like my own. When the little palomino filly was born her mama passed away shortly after. She was an orphan foal and I did find a nurse mare but Tina was there every step of the way. She stepped right in and has helped raise that little filly from the very beginning. Then the other filly got weaned and she was there for that filly also 💗 she loved her babies. Thank you for helping me raise these crazy fillys Tina 🙏🏼 Sylvia Elgie Morton I am so very sorry for your loss. You gave her such a great life. She was so lucky to have you as her owner all those years. Here is a good memory of Tina playing around with the fillys 💗 She definitely left some hoof prints here at Salty Acres! We all loved her dearly 🙏🏼

Our Story

Our story begins 20 something years ago when my parents brought me for what they thought was just a pony ride LOL. I grew up volunteering at a boarding/pony ride/lesson facility and got my first horse at the age of 13 with all the tips I saved up from volunteering. I later decided in 2016 I would open up a boarding facility myself. I am in school becoming a certified veterinary technician and currently work with a vet part time.

See, I have been where you are. I know how stressful, aggravating and unpleasant boarding can be. Having to rely on other people to feed your horse, keep his/her water clean, keep stalls cleaned, etc. only to find empty or dirty water buckets, missed feedings, messy stalls, and more! This is the main reason why I chose to do it myself. Let us show you how great boarding can be when you find the right place and people to trust.

We have a beautiful 40 acre facility we just purchased in Dunnellon. We will be putting up all brand new fencing, shelters in each pasture, misters for those crucially hot summer days, a brand new barn, arena and more! We also have a pond on the property that will soon be cleaned out and perfect for swimming your horses. Aside from what we will eventually have to offer, you can board here stress free with assurance that your horse is being properly cared for the way YOU like it! We offer board for any age or discipline. We do have experience in treating/medicating and will offer lay ups as soon as we have the barn built.
